Title: More Prog 2004 previews...
Post by: The Amstor Computer on 19 November, 2003, 10:10:33 PM
For anyone who hasn't noticed, a new set of preview images have been posted on the front page, this time from Nikolai Dante and The VCs.

The artwork for Dante is, as usual, gorgeous - it's just a pity it's another one-off. The series has been in limbo for a while now, and it really needs to get moving again, preferably with a new multi-parter.

The VCs... well, it's Anthony Williams. I'm not a fan, and looking at the previews of the upcoming series, I don't think I'm going to be converted.

Here's hoping there'll be a third preview - Robo-Hunter, Monsters of Rock and Caballistics, Inc., maybe?

What happened to the Simon Fraser Dante story for Prog 2004?

According to his own website (Not updated for some time) he was due to be drawing the Christmas one off.

"Monsters of Rock?"

AFAIK, it's a Terror Tale from Gordon Rennie and Frazer Irving, in the vein of their previous stories, Reefer Madness and Mars Needs Mates. Should be good.

re: Simon Fraser on Dante:

His last comment on it at his site was, "Other news; I`m told there will be a Dante story in the upcoming Prog 2004 special and that I will be drawing it."

Given past experience, I'd guess he wasn't working fast enough for Tharg, and so John Burns was brought in.

Well I liked the VC's art but I may be biased.
It also comes out on my wife's birthday.

Looking good indeed :o)

First page is very Bad Company, meant in the best of ways. McCarthyism? discuss...

Dante looks good too, although disappointing no not have SF on it. Still, later maybe? As long as it's forthcoming rather than replaced I'd be happy. Tales at sea always welcome.

yeah dissapointed Dante is only back for a one off wouldnt mind another large arc for him, VC's should be good last series seemed to try and give the characters a bit of individuality at the cost of action, I guess so we care about them in this book which is hopefully action, action, action.

ISTR that Si Fraser's currently working on a creator-owned thing and some European stuff, so maybe he was too busy...

Ant:
Have you refrained from using too many computer effects this time?

There was a bit of discussion as to whether they worked in book II or not, and IIRC, you yourself mentioned that they didn't work as well as you'd hoped.

Does anyone notice the size of these pages?  They look like different dimensions to the current 2k size, like they were in the meg or something.

Am I delirious or are we having yet another page resizing?

"ISTR that Si Fraser's currently working on a creator-owned thing and some European stuff, so maybe he was too busy..."

If that's the case, then I guess I owe him an apology. I'd still like to see him back on Dante; John Burns is wonderful, but Simon Fraser really made Dante his own.

I've pulled way back on the obvious computer rendered backgrounds so it's far more traditional in appearance. Just using photoshop as a colouring tool.
BTW, Dan has gone kill crazy in book 3. Anything that moves gets killed.

The strange thing is is I've seen what I assume is more or less the same set of computer rendered techniques used in your Titan stuff and there they seem to fit in fine. It's only when they went to colour that they started seeming out of place.

I like John Burns' work enormously, but I don't like his Dante at all.

I'm still forcing myself to believe that Book 4 of Tsar Wars didn't happen because Simon didn't draw it.  If anyone should have drawn the deaths of the Romanovs, it should have been him.

Prolly not the venue for this kind of thing, and it'll bore the pants of everyone, but ...

I suspect Ant is filling colours in on greyscaled lineart which has anti-aliasing, so often you get a weird white siloutte around filled in areas, I've noticed this on lots of his/your(if you're reading it) stuff and on some action man boxes I happened to glance at while I was in Toys-R-Us not buying Action Man. Oh no.

Ah, see, that's why you want to use high resolution bitmaps for yer line art rather than interpolated greyscales...

I used to make a fundamental mistake of creating a line art layer after changing from bitmap to grayscale and lowering the file resolution. This creates a mid tone buffer all around the line art and appears as a white-ish line when printed. This no doubt is very boring to sane people, but sadly interesting to me.
