watched this last night, hardly seems like it goes for nearly 4 hours. Added scenes not essential but certainly flesh things out a bit more, Love the Last march of the Ents and the extra bits with Merry and Pippen lighten things up a bit. Never read the books so cant tell you whats missing from em.. This is how a fantasy movie should be made, bring on Return of the King Mr jackson I cant wait..
Must get for anyone even a little bit into fantasy.

Four hours????
It sounds better than the cinema release which I found very weak. Will have to check it out.
I'm getting it from Santa... so I've got to wait for ages before I see it.
Me too. Although one of the kids at work is gonna gimme a lend before ROTK comes out.
In other news I watched Xmen 2 the other night again and very good it is too.
You'll find the basic 4 disc set for ?17.99 at dvd.co.uk.

This set kicks ass!! Might even be better than the Fellowship Spec-Ed last year...
Apparently, the region 2 set's been cut by 4 mins. Completists might want to look out for the region 1 version...
Watched the extended version last night and having loved the original strangely loved this! -And found that it actually added a lot of missing elements. Mainly.
SPOILERS
Explaining the fierce loyalty of Aragorn's horse.
Why Faramir doubts his worth and how he finds redemption
And how Gollum's sense of betrayal is heightened by the beating he receives from Faramir's rangers.
And some new moments of mindless violence at Helms Deep. Nice.
The 42 minutes they've put back are the 42 minutes with most of the plot and pacing in. A vast improvement on the theatrical release.

Doubleyou-tee-eff?
What's the friggin' point in that?
Saffin'raffin'schnafin'grumblemumble...
Well, still going to wait until the whole thing is done as a one boxset *full* version, even if it's not out for 10 years.
First I've heard of this, Noisy. Where's the extra four minutes gone?* Aren't these things sometimes just to do with things running at different rates? (or am I think cinema releases vs tv relases)?
I ordered mine today. Plan to tie the whole family to a sofa and make them watch the extended fellowship followed by the extended towers and then off to the cinema to see Return of The King.
I can't wait. (They probably can but hopefully they'll indulge the old fart).
(*nearly resists temptation to do scouse joke at Noisy's expense)
I'd love to do that but i'd probably have to gag 'em all as well

No, I don't think you are. I'm not saying it isn't cut (I haven't checked) and I don't know all the specific terms but basically there is a speedup on PAL (our system) against NTSC (The U.S. system) that would explain the R2 version being 4 minutes shorter than the R1 version. This however is generally compensated for by PAL having better picture quality, down to there being more lines that go to make up the picture!
Alan!
i think having bought the 2 disker i shall stick with it.
seems a lot of money for a few extra bits.
I think that nearly 45 minutes added to the movie, plus 2 discs worth of extra documentaries and such equates to a little bit more than "a few extra bits". Honestly, the extra scanes really do make a differernce. Many plot elements are explained and the whole pacing of the film comes across as being much more fluent.
Alan!
'i think having bought the 2 disker i shall stick with it.'
Trust us, fishy one. The extended edition is infininately better than the cinema cut.
The new scenes arent there just to add extra cool to the film, they realy are important scenes in the sense that they help explain the emotions and motives of the main characters, and also the plot.
Although im still convinced that there is a missing conversation between Eomer and Wormtongue (in the scene where we first meet Wormtongue) as the editing is a bit wierd.
Could be wrong though!
santas just got a dvd player from ebay & ordered the tt dvd from dvd.co.uk i just hope its this long version he's ordered. pah, santa get with it daddio stop being 2 years behind everyone else will ya !
Bou, this will be the long version, I've ordered a copy too but do expect to wait a little longer for delivery from that site due to demand, I'm sure it'll be there in time to enjoy with your mince pies and sherry ;-)
please don't mention ebay... spent far too much there recently :-o

"The 42 minutes they've put back are the 42 minutes with most of the plot and pacing in. A vast improvement on the theatrical release. "
Totally agree! The extended version was what I wanted the cinema version to be ... the extended edition feels like a full, properly rounded film - exciting, funny, scary and moving by turns.
Unreservedly recommended.
Cheers
Jim
"First I've heard of this, Noisy. Where's the extra four minutes gone?"
Dunno - haven't seen it yet. I'm not sure what's missing - I just had a conversation with a guy who was cursing the BBFC for cutting bits out. He seemed pretty sure there were actual bits of scenes missing, though...
"Nearly resists temptation to do scouse joke at Noisy's expense"
'EY! (in comedy high-pitched voice).
hmm perhaps i will rent it.
25 quid for a film you already have is a lot.
Last Year I got the Fellowship extended from Santa, and had to (Obviously) wait until after xmas to see it. I've not read the books (all the way through) and not seen it at the cinema, so I could hardly wait.
I loved it.
This year, I thought forget waiting, and have bought Towers for myself (I don't get to go to the cinema anymore) I'll be watching it (most of) next week.
?17.99 delivered from dvd.co.uk. ;)
Alan!
Hmmm... maybe my opinion of the movies will increase after I've seen the extended version. I've been on a bit of a downer with them since I saw the Two Towers last year, which felt a bit shoddy to me.
I suppose the compromise that is being made is that you get the mass market version in the cinemas and the better film a year later on DVD. I suppose that's about as good as it was ever going to get.
It's frustrating knowing I'm going to be going to the cinema in December to see a movie, a good 30-40 minutes from its best. And even more frustrating that I have to wait for a year for the better version.
Totally agree with you Paul.
I'm even tempted now to skip the cinema release & just wait for the *real* thing next year.
I know someone who does that, but I don't have the willpower.
I probably don't have the will power either, actually. Good job the local cinema is only ?2.99 a ticket.
And considering I didn't pay to see the first two (because Oddgirl was working at a cinema then, fact-finders) I guess that's fair enough.
I think I'll wait until the massive uberDVD comes out with all three films, plus the extended bits.
I'll save on cash and just buy the videos to tide me over in the meantime.
Well, I've watched the extended version tonight and it is much better as you'd expect. It's renewed my faith a little to see the next one.
I enjoyed all the Hobbit stuff with Sam/Frod/Gollum and to a lesser extent Merry and Pippin.
Still wasn't too fussed about the whole Theodin/Rohan/Helms deep stuff. Not bad, but not great. Got very restless watching that stuff and kept going off to get a drink.
The dwarf is still a comedy sidekick. That's all he is, it's very grating.
Whatever the merits/dismerits it's better than the standard hollywood toss by a long mark.
Although iof you like it you MUST hear the BBC radio play. Michael Horden is the bestest Gandalf ever. And I think McKellen's false nose makes him look more like Horden funnily enough.
Excellent! Paul you've restored my faith of the films.
Loved the extra references to (ahem) pipe-weed!
"Excellent! Paul you've restored my faith of the films"
Wait! You havn't heard my theory that it's a terrorist recruitment drive yet.
You see you have the two 'Allies' who have superior technology and forces and watch over the world from their towers (which for reasons of taste I won't go into).
Then you have some brave undermanned and technologically backward good guys defending against the agressive invaders who want to have a regime change.
You have Frodo the suicide ring destroyer, or should that be suicide bomber?!? Carrying the ULTIMATE weapon (original the wepaon of the sliies) to mount doom.
Did Osama Bin Laden and Saddham Hussein get executive producer credits!?!
You couldn't make it up!
Next week in my column: Frodo the Homo

I'm quite excited. Mine arrived today (17-99 from DVD.CO.UK, thanks for the nod, Esoteric Ed) and I think I shall be watching it on Saturday night.
IIRC, Tolkien was always preferred application to analogy so he'd be quite chuffed with your interpretaion PVS.
Also, the commentary and documentaries seem to be just one big love-in, it's utterly sickening.
PVS, you grumbly old sod, there's nothing wrong with people getting on and having a good time.
Anyway, I couldn't resist and had a sneak peek at some of the extra scenes. They all look very nice, my only grumble is that there seems to be more anachronistic dialogue sneaking in. It may be my imagination and some of the lines a straight from JRR himself but I fear Shelob may appear on screen in the next film and Frodo says "This is so not good!".
Anyway, has anyone found an easter egg on it yet? IIRC the Fellowship extended had a trailer for the Two Towers on it so I'm rather hoping for a Retorn of the King trailer.
"there's nothing wrong with people getting on and having a good time"
Well, I's argue that, but really, 4 commentaries and another 4 hours of documentaries about how everyone was so talented and giving, I almost puked my barely beating shrivelled black heart out.

My pleasure Tiplodocus, enjoy it... sadly mine hasn't arrived yet :-0

Anyone know of any Easter Eggs in the Extended Edition of Two Towers (Region 2)?
I know there was one on the Extended Version of Fellowship.
Cheers
I'm still looking - hopefully for a Return of The King trailer.

There's some well scary stuff in the extras. I watched one last night where they had transformed ARewen into a kick ass action heroine and written her into the battle for Helms Deep (just so they could get the love interest together). There's even some footage of her fighting stunt Uruk Hai.
Fortunately, sanity (or was there an internet petition as implied?) prevailed and they rewrote it all... Phew - that would have been so Hollywood and mundane!
Damn right!
It was good of them to explain the changes made to the book as well, cause lets face it, for the film to work the changes had to happen.
Any info on easter eggs would be welcome!
(Ive still not found the Fellowship one cus im crap! Can anyone give me a hint?)
The fellowship one, is the Two Towers trailer introduced by PJ.
To access it place Disc two of the extended version (region 2) into your dvd player, go to choose a scene.
Go to the last scene (IIRC 48) and press down an image of the two towers will appear (bottom right of screen) select it to see the trailer.
The only one i know of for The Two Towers.
On the first disc, go to the scene selection and then highlight chapter 30. Press down to reveal a ring. Press enter to see Gollum's acceptance speech from the MTV movie awards
Well worth it.
Thanking you kindly, sir!
Tulkas: that's not on the region 2 extended version though (at least it's not on MY version) is it?
:-(
Erm. Truthfully I don't know. A colleague e-mailed me that one this morning so i haven't had time to check it out.
Apologises all round if it doesn't work on region 2 and also "Hey New line, what a fuckin swizz, give us the same as America ya bastards!"
It aint on my disks either....
....but can be downloaded by any kazaa user! I recommend it!!
Logan: That link isn't working for me. Are you sure it's right? (and are these Easter Eggs different fro the ones above?)
Same Easter Eggs - just the one from the extended Fellowship.
It says:
Easter egg instructions for The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring - Extended Edition (R2)
This phenomenal DVD is an absolute treat for fans and contains an easter egg on the second disc. From the Main Menu, go to the Select A Scene page and from there, highlight 48 from the list on the right and press Enter on your remote control. This should take you to another page, from where you should highlight Official Fan Club Credits and press Down on your remote control. This should reveal an image of The Two Towers at the bottom of the screen - pressing Enter on your remote control now, will show a short message from Director Peter Jackson, followed by a trailer for Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. This egg runs for around 4 minutes and is presented in anamorphic widescreen and Dolby Digital Surround EX.
An MTV spoof (entitled Lord of the Piercing and featuring Jack Black and Sarah Michelle Gellar) was included on pretty much all non-UK versions of this disc, but was deemed too rude for a PG certificate - it could have been included at the expense of a 12 certificate, but the decision was made to drop it for the lower age rating.
