Title: Metro Aid (for Londoners only)
Post by: Dudley on 25 November, 2003, 04:18:39 PM
Fellow Londoners,

Unfair though it may be, some of our compatriots are unfortunate enough to be forced to live in a place we variously refer to as "the sticks", "the outside", or when feeling charitable "the country".  They miss out on so much in life, in their little Stoneybridges and Birminghams, with only the compensation of occasionally giving birth to sheep (forgive me if I'm a little unclear on some of these details).

And now dear old Tharg in his wisdom has decreed that they shall not receive the genius that will no doubt be the Metro Dredd.  They are probably hurling bones around and howling in front of big monoliths as I write.  Indeed, we may have to double the perimeter guard.

I propose that we unite to save these wretches.  I have a scanner and would be happy to take on the duties of scanning the pages in myself.  but I need a couple of other Londoners to take part to ensure that the Metro is collected on a daily basis.

Identify yourselves and volunteer: otherwise they might all end up moving in next door, with their country practices and strange accents.  And you wouldn't like that, now, would you?

Bah - you speak above yourself - We Brum types have most adequate access to the Metro - If anyone wants a copy, let me know and I'll attempt to get more than one on my way to work....

But otherwise, I agree with Duds - we must make this available for the less fortunate!

When does it start in the metro?

Damn it! I live in London, but hardly ever use the tube. Me studio, where I work, is easily accessed by foot or pedal power.
I suppose I could take an hour long diversion in the wrong direction to satisfy my curiosity, and supplement me thrillpower intake.
Actually, that might be a bloomin good idea, seeing as i've not seen a prog in over two weeks! That's right folks, prog 1367 AND 1368 still haven't turned up yet.

I also have the problem of being in London but never using the tube.
I've heard rumours that they've started putting Metro papers on the busses, but obviously not on my bus.

Wouldn't it be great, Alan Barnes, if the Megazine could reprint these MetroDredds at a contractually obliging period after they are published in the paper? Like three or six months late, or something?

Surely if you walk past a station you can just nip in and pick one up? I know not all of the little stations will have it but it's worth a bash.

Also has the Metro got a website? I did a quick Google on it but found nowt. It might get put on there.

The Metro website is, surprisingly, at www.metro.co.uk .

The strips will go up on the site for a fortnight once they've been published, so don't panic about not being able to get hold of a print copy.

At 411MANIA we've doing a tournement (organised the same as Logan's cover tourneys) to decide the best comic on the market. Each comic has a writer as proposer who writes a) 2 paragraphs on why the title is the best on the market and b) why its better than its round oppenent.

I'm doing 2000AD and I'm going against the Flash in the first round, anyone got any ideas for the opening and (especially) the competitive paragraphs as I know squat about the Johns/Kolins Flash (only read the current arc).

Any help would be welcome and will help me show the Americans that Brits do it best.

Hooray!

You could also sneak out a cheapo, bog-roll printed book version at some point, Jamie.

Just a suggestion.

Nah; the format and planned number of these strips pretty much precludes a book collection - when you're basically fitting a week into a page, six months' worth of strip doesn't amount to much, alas.

'Course, if it does really well and the deal continues... then yeah, maybe. Otherwise, I'd imagine they'd make a great supplement to a Meg...

I was thinking of the ?2.50 (or similarly cheap) Daily Star Dredd reprint books, which were a great value short-term distraction.

You're the expert, oh booky droid.

Are we talking about 'Metro' the free paper you get on the tubes? I'm sure this was answered earlier in the thread, but I couldn't be bothered to read it all. We get lots of copies of this at my work, and I have a few mates who work for London Underground, so getting hold of a load of copies shouldn;t be a problem. Is there going to be some kind of 2000AD-related strip published there then? If so, whens it happening?

Economically, t doesn't make sense unless there's enough to support a decent page count. By my reckoning, the book - as things stand - would be 24 pages long!

5-minute toilet book style thing?  Kind of what they do with Garfield/Doonesbury?
Knock 'em out on bog paper with a glossy cover and stick them on the shelves for ?3.99, or even do them like The Far Side do as desktops or calenders?  Assuming 3 panels a day, 5 days a week, you've 750 panels - enough to apply some control and end up with a high quality product.  Could even be a good marketing tool on the side?

Put in the unreprinted Daily Star Dredds by Wagner/Grant/Gibson/collins, the Terror Tales, and the Sin/Dex from Metal Hammer, Dredds from Rock Power and various other bits ands bobs like the Talbot Consumer Dredd or the British Airways Jock illo and you'd soon have a "rarest ever" Extreme Edition...

Hmm, that's an idea (apart from the Star stuff, which would be an absolute mare to sort out).

Maybe a coupla years down the line...

You're not coming to DreddCon, are you, fishface?

Pity. I fancied testing the relative durability of aquatic life / big stack of BUTTON MAN books :P

Three people have asked when the metro dredd will be starting but no one has replied. Does anybody know when this will begin. I've heard nothing about it.

Cheers guys

Nothing more concrete then "January" - as per Tharg in this week's (1368) Nerve Centre.
