Title: Lawgiver prop - would youbuy one?
Post by: HiEx on 08 December, 2003, 03:56:48 PM
As a sideline to my normal job, I'm in the process of finshing up my first project with a company in China that custom sculpts and manufactures painted polyresin statues of comic & anime characters.

Now being a longtime 2K fan, I was thinking of approaching Rebellion and finding out what their licensing terms and fees are for 2K characters. However, as there are already statues of 2K characters available, I was thinking about making prop 2k weapons instead, with the first project being Dredd's Lawgiver MK.II (comic version).

These would be 1/1 scale non-firing replicas, made of heavyweight, durable polyresin (no moving parts). They would be fully painted and highly detailed. These would be limited to a production run of 300pcs, which is the minimum order quantity that I have to place with the factory (although more could be made if there is enough demand). Each Lawgiver would be individually marked, i.e '1 of 300', '2 of 300' etc and would come in a high quality card box with die-cut styrofoam insert to protect the gun.

Obviously, I have no idea of the licencing fee yet, but as a very rough guestimate at this stage I'd be aiming for a selling price of ?45 to ?60 each. Do you guys and girls have any interest in this sort of thing?

Just thought something like this would be perfect for pointing at the telly and pretending to blow away annoying TV personalities, movie stars etc (Ben Afflec, cough, cough).

Thoughts, suggestions?

Sounds good to me, although I'm not personally a big buyer of that kind of merchandise.

These things always strike me as a bit pricey, but for a good quality Lawgiver, I might be persuaded....

Can you make one that shoots sticky darts or corks or something? I would seriously love that!

I'd pay ?45 for a lawgiver replica, much more than that and I couldn't afford it.

When i went to Hong Kong they had all sorts of replica weapons that fired BB like ammo. I would definitely have one of those.

You get them in most toy shops (in HK) as they are mostly made of plastic. You can also buy them in the UK since I got one here in Edinburgh (wonderland on lothian road) for my boy. unfortunatrly his mother confiscated it from both of us.

They are designated as soft air guns.

they are superb.but banned in singapore.

in thialand they make them in metal with compressed air propulsion systems,
they are seriouily wonderful fun.
the uzi shoots far to many pellets at a go.
but its so much fun.

they look and feel very real, weighted with lead often in the handles. hence why they are banned.

imagine a lawgiver version. oh my i would go week at the knees.

Heh, as much as I'd like an airsoft Lawgiver as well, the design, engineering and tooling costs would be insanely expensive.

some smug git will modify one of the standard ones you watch.

if you do wish to proceed with the lawgiver  though. let me know. would be a lovely thing to add to the collection. of course its easy to say yes.
another thing altogether to get it done and find a market for 300 peices.

Finding a market for 300pcs does worry me a bit, but I'm willing to give it a go.

Unfortunatly in my opnion, the UK does not really have much of a toy collector mentality amongst adults, compared with countries like Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore and to some extent the US, where it is seen as more socially acceptable, even normal for adults to collect toys and model kits.

This and the fact that 2000AD characters are not that popular or well recognised outside of the UK is always going to be a limiting factor with successfully marketing 2000AD toys.

Ooh! Here's an idea, u could put one of those buzzers in the handle so that the lawgiver 'shocks' people when they pick it up?

But not its owner, obviously.

Perhaps you should develop a new, non-invasive DNA recognition system.
