I've always wanted to do an alternative Christmas album of songs that have nothing to do with Christmas but sound vaguely Christmassy because they have sleigh-bells on them for not obvious reasons.
So far:
Ebenezzer Good by the Shamen
I Wanna Be Your dog by Iggy Pop
There must be more!
Damn that should have been 'Alt Christmas Records'
Pretty much any Elvis christmas compilation will feature a bunch of filler songs that are nothing to do Christmas and are in fact about god and stuff.
As for gratuitous bells, its got to be Mike Oldfield.
>As for gratuitous bells, its got to be Mike Oldfield.
And that would make Oldfield a gratuitous bell-end, I presume.
Are you dissing the man who invented the Blue Peter themetune?
It's a bit off tpic, but the latest xmas no1 news from the lamoid music store is that the Darkness are in the lead by 4,500 copies. 2nd is that mad world song, blue are 3rd and pap idol a suitably crappy 4th.
Tanky-Lee-Travis
Agh, its like all of my pathological hatreds, rolled up into one christmas chart.
Have you heard "I Get Wet" by Andrew WK? It's full of bloody sleigh bells for no apparent reason!
not really alternate
but i have a great version of
Christmas( baby please come home) by U2 which is damn good and not a typically band you would asocaite with such things.
I think "So why so sad" by the Manics had sleigh bells on it.
Lots of the songs on Garbage's 'Beautiful' album have sleigh bells for unknown reasons.
And I'm sure bits of Lightning Seeds 'Jollification' sound Christmassy.
The Vandals xmas album is v good. Especially 'my 1st xmas as a woman' and 'grandpa's last xmas. No sleigh bells but damn funny
Safe on Colin Newman's (him out of Wire) Not To album had sleighbells on it.
"Sunday Morning" by the Velvet Underground. "Snowbound" by the Razorcuts - not only a great Xmas song but also IMHO the greatest song ever written (really!).
Durutti Column always sound Chrismassy to me too.

And is _very_ different to the 100mph Wire original! BTW, if any Wire fans are out there and don't realise, Wire's been releasing amazing new material for the past year or so. Read and Burn 2, in particular, is perhaps the best thing they've ever done.
