In my line of work, you rarely get the opportunity to do any kind of articles about comics. But in the last few months, thanks mainly to the arrival in town of the Judge Dredd exhibition, I've been able to do loads.
Anyway, since the exhibition left town, I thought all scope for doing articles about Dredd had vanished.
So imagine my surprise when I opened the mail to discover the following photo:
(image courtesy of the Harrogate Advertiser)Turns out the kids at Nidderdale High School in Pateley Bridge had created this massive poster of Dredd for the main stairway of their school so everyone moves in an orderly fashion. Although you can't see it in the photo, there's a big speech bubble saying "Keep to the left, creeps!".
Just thought I'd bring this excellent example of practical Dredd art to you all - let's hear a round of applause for the kids!
(personally, looks like a Greg Staples Dredd from Babes in Arms methinks)
superb.
who painted it then? must be some Scrott on the staff surely.perhaps the head master?
great pic though. and some decent art work to boot.
That is absolute quality!
And to think that when i was at school, i used to get told off for drawing Dredd all the time!
Typical!
Mr Tharg, headmaster of the galaxies greatest primary school has this to say -
Harumph! Getting the Dredd boy to keep order was my idea first! Whilst I'm glad to see the thrill-powered influence of my mighty mind spreading across the educational system it should be pointed out that Joe Dredd Junior has been a prefect for many years at my school.
In fact, people are beginning to speculate as to whether he will one day get too old for primary school and be replaced by his younger brother. Nonsense say I. Stubble is no reason to stop wearing short trousers.
Of course, this isn't the first time my ideas have been used in other schools. Otto Sump has been providing school dinners for years!"
Mr XBrunt says - that's pretty cool.
I managed to get a 1/2 scale Slaine into my 'O' level portfolio!
Copied from Mr Fabry, and the detail was dizzying to copy.
Bolt-01.
That's brilliant!!
I hope that Tharg doesn't go all Disney corp. and sue the school...
Well the school isn't deriving financial gain from the thing and it was part of the kids' art project.
I'm sure he agrees with us that it's a great advert for Mr Dredd!
The kids who painted it are the ones lined up in front of it. What's the accolade for services to toothdom?
