Title: The Story of Doctor Who...
Post by: Buddy on 31 December, 2003, 07:31:19 AM
Best bit...

Peter Davidison descirbing his death scene, all he could see was Nichola Bryants cleavage jiggling in front of his face.

His greatest Dr. Who moment, and no one noticed it cos the camera was fixed on Peri's tits!!!

They don't make 'em like taht anymore.

Hope the image link works...

I always seem to remember that when Nicola Bryant came to Who everyone got excited, not just because she turned up in a bikini, but because at that time all the assistants (female ones anyway) were leaving wearing less than they started with!

But what of Rowan Atkinson, the mysterious ninth doctor who appears to have been written out of history?

Never been into Dr Who, but watched a bit of the program.

Was Peter Cushing mentioned? Or is he not really considered to be a 'doctor'?

Well, obviously Cuhsings not real, as he was just in a refilmed Hammer version, but surely Atkinson must represent a legitimate rgeneration of the Doctor? An entire regeneration, and yet we've only ever seen one of his adventures! The idea that the doctor would regenerate, do some twaty stuff for Comic Releif, then regenerate again into Richard E. Grant, thus wasting a vital section of his lifespan, is just absurd! Where are the novels, the audios, the webisodes? It's some kind of conspiracy.

DD.  Atkinson played the Dr for a comic releif spoof that was quite well recieved IIRC.

Dr Who is planed to return in 2005 to the BBC in a series of 13 episodes, hour long with only a couple of those as two-parters and the rest will be stand alone.

Russel T Davies is in charge and he aims to make it "a science-fiction series" which "smacks of 2005" ... whatever that means.

Dude, they didn't even mention the Paul McGann telemovie, which has obviously now been retcon erased from the official Who pantheon, so I don't think Rowan Atkinson or poor old Petey Cushing have an earthly here...

Never mind Cushing & Atkinson, they didn't mention Paul McGann (unless I missed something).

I think I heard that the next Doctor was going to be Bill Nighty (sp?). He has a sort of William HArtnel look about him and, if it is true, would make an excellent Doctor.

Well, if that's the case, I wonder if McCoy will end up getting a cameo in the first episode of the new series?

Hopefully so, as long as we get the audience-pleasing thrill of seeing him being machine-gunned to death again, or something similar.

I know Gordon thinks Bill Nighy is a mythical creature like the fabled chickenwhelk, but he is also to be seen in BBC2's grumpy old men.

I think he would be great for Dr Who, I have to say I want to see an oldish duffer in the job.

Grumpy Old Men... that's the one.

I could just see him, facing the cybermen and saying...

'Look, I just don't have time for all this buggering about, I've a hundred and one things to get on with, so can't we just speed this invasion of earth op a bit!!'

paul mc gann is seen continuity wise as the 8th doctor. cushing and atiknison aren't cause they were shite. cushing kept calling himself doctor who which is just stupid and atkinson hasn't been funny since blackadder two.

Theres also a cartoon/web cast thing on the BBC web site at the moment.
Only the Doctor is played by Richard E. Grant....

Apparently Paul McGann wasnt mentioned, because the TV movie an american co production and didnt rate well. Or at least thats the reason the BBC are giving.

Didn't rate well? It got 9 million, which means a lot more people were watching than watched any McCoy episodes. 5 million more.

And I'm a huge McCoy fan, by the way, but the facts are there.

One for the Who fans out there, HOw many regens does a time lord have? I'm sure when i was younger i read they only had 8 regens or so in some DR Who book(guide or some such thing). Surely the plucky Dr is past his limits.... course I may be wrong memory not that reliable these days, specially after destroying so many brain cells Wednesday...

IIRC it's ten.

In one Tom Baker story set of Gallifrey (with, I think, Linda Bellingham as a Gallifrean prosecuter - though that may have been Trial of a Time Lord with Colin Baker), the Master is revealed to have become scarred, wracked by disease and horribly mutilated because he's tried to go past his last regeneration. IIRC he tries to steal the doctor's body and take his regenerations for himself ...

He has 13 lives, as it has always been I think.

It's been years since I've seen The Deadly Assassin (the Tom Baker one longmanshort mentions) but if that's the story then it's ripped off wholesale for the TV movie.

Hopefully there are some real Whovians out there who can answer this.

But in the meantime - wasn't Hartnell meant to be the Doctor's third incarnation?  So he's actually on about number 11 now?

Which makes it especially odd that he wasted on of his regenerations on being Mr Bean.

Of course there will be some deus ex machina that will allow the dr to have many more incarnations, or more likely theyll forget about it.

Boy, that's going to piss off the guy who's been spending precious hours of his life figuring out the precise continuity of every Dr Who show, novel, audio and webisode ever....

IIRC, they already have - I'm sure the current thinking is that Timelords can have infinite generations. Having said that, I hope they start the continuity from McCoy again, and ignore everything else. Atkinson can definitely be ignored, as it was just a comic relief thing. Shame about McGann, though - he wasn't that bad, but the script was. Hopefully Grant will take over the role full time - he'd work pretty well.

Jesus, you continuity freaks will wanting to include the 'episode' where the Doctor 'fixed it' for some brat to take a ride in the Tardis on Savil's program... hang that IS in some guide books!

Well OK K.9 and Company then... oh hang on...

Time Lords have 13 lives, their original plus 12 regenerations. However in the episode "The Five Doctors" the Timel Lords offered to give the Master (who had used them all up) a full set of new lives if he helped them, so there is a way for the Doctor to acquire new ones if need be. William Hartnell is the first Doctor. Paul McGann is the ninth and appears to be generally regarded by the people who do books and websites on the subject as a bona fide incarnation: he appears in definitive lists and novels and suchlike. Peter Cushing on the other hand does not count because his films were all remakes of William Hartnell TV stories so he was only playing the first doctor, not a regeenration in his own right.

Everybody got that? Good!

Yeah, but what about The Brain of Morbius?
Where the Doctor is having the mind battle thing with the other Time Lord(I can't rememeber his name, begins with 'S' I think)?
What about all the faces that appear, supposedly the Doctor's previous incarnations..?

>Where the Doctor is having the mind battle thing with the other Time Lord(I can't rememeber his name, begins with 'S' I think)?

Err Morbius himself?

The faces were Morbius other incarnations (well that's one way nit-pickers get around it)

>Paul McGann is the ninth
McGann is the eighth. Richard E. Grant is the ninth in The Scream Of The Shalka (the BBC consider him an "official" Doctor). No-one has been officially cast in the new series yet.

Davies obviously loves the series, but appears to have a realistic understanding of modern television requirements. Don't expect the series to be continuity heavy, it's got to establish a whole new audience. I don't even think that they'll mention which doctor this is (10th, 11th, 42nd).

Does Paul Cornell read these boards? Are you writing for the new series:) I assume you can't tell us if you are:)

The other Time-lord in 'Brain of Morbius' is Solon played by the pretty darn groovy Philip Madoc.

It's always interesting to see one group of fans making fun of another. I'm in both groups, so I must be uber-geek.
