"even when Rebellion split the message board away from the official site..."
This came from another thread (and the 'when' seems to be referring to the future, rather than the past, though that's possible it wasn't meant like that), so I don't take it as confirmed rumour, but as website is supposedly being revamped I can see it happening...
I'm not sure if that means the Message Boarders will be sent somewhere else, or that the Message Board will be placed, one step away from the site.
Interesting, if it is true are they trying to keep the chattering of fans at a safe distance? I can understand why a company might do that, I mean lots of boarders being dissatisified with the Autumn Offensive for instance probably doesn't look very good, but cases like that don't happen often, and the comments are usally as varied as the people (The Hive Mind theory is a bit weak).
Some people choose to disregard the people here as non-representative of 2000AD's readership and not everyone pays attention the board anyway, a magazine lead from the bottom up, probably wouldn't be a good idea anyway. I don't think there has ever been any real desire for message boarders to be a force that actively campaigns as a group for changes.
Still, if it's true (and that's a big it) it's a shame, the message board kept me reading 2000AD at times when I might have quit. The message board got me to buy 2000AD regularly, then subscribe.
But basically readers aren't always going to say what a company would like them to say and you can understand why a company might want to distance itself from any comments it can't effectively control, like say the letters columns where it can paint whatever picture it wants to about the readership and reaction to the comic (not that I'm saying it does, just that it's controllable).
Whether it's true or not, or even if it makes any difference or not is debatable, but I just thought it was interesting. If it's not true, well, there you go, more internet hysteria, if it is true, then it might be a shame, but I'm sure the posters would just move onto wherever the board went or other forums, they just wouldn't be on the official site.
So, is the message board going, if so where to, and what are the reasons behind it?
WHAT!!!!
thats both disgraceful and at the same time if it is correct. a truly sad thing to hear talk of.
on two levels. i really enjoy this area.
on the other level on what basis would such a decsion be based.
by the way
which thread was this on? this board or another linked in some way one.
or are you really trying to get the board going for the hell of it.
if you are. well done. if not. what was the source.
Which thread was it mentioned in PVS?
It was just said on another thread, and as it's been said publicly, I thought it was worth picking up on.
I have pointed out that it may either not be true, or I have just misunderstood. Even if it is true, it doesn't neccesarilly mean the end of the message board anyway. So probably best not to panic and go hoo-ha, a lot.
paranio now starts
:~)
WAKE
can you shed some light here? please.
the reference is actually by WR LOGAN in my scojo??? thread (sorry guys - thats to everyone thats posted so far before bou gets here)
the reference is actually - past tense
has the message board ever been moved apart from the site bcos of 'scojo'
(really confused)
stront692
It's not something I'd object to.
It can be a bit sweary and adult round here and I would understand if Rebellion want to keep it at arm's length a little.
- Trout
"the reference is actually - past tense"
No, you're wrong there.
"***** is ill, lets not think otherwise, he will kill the board, he has on others, even when Rebellion split the message board away from the official site he shouldn't be allowed back in."
Because that message above would say 'when the message board split he wasn't allowed in.' The fact is says 'shouldn't' implies it's something that has yet to happen.
As I said, it's probably just reading too much into something that was written by Logan in haste, I just thought it made an interesting point.
If it happened, I wouldn't mind that much to be honest! I don't see the problem. S'long as it doesn't just run off without letting us know where it's gone!
All we would need would be a link from this site and it would run like any other comics message board.
I'm not campaigning for it, however.
It's nice to be a regular on the "official" board.
- Trout
If it gets moved, will we all still be able to find it?
just read it again, makes sense now
after autumn offensive had to happen really
>As I said, it's probably just reading too much into something that was written by Logan in haste, I just thought it made an interesting point.
I understood from conversations had with certain people that the message board would become a separate entity, so that for legal reasons Rebellion couldn?t be held to account for any views or opinions voiced on it.
At the moment the message board looks the same as the site, I believe the change will entail a different look as well as being at arms length away from the site.
La Placa Rifa,
W. R. Logan.
In that case, what would happen to the rest of fan content on this site? Egotistically; will my strip and fan profile be lost to the world?
I reckon fan strips and profiles can be controlled in a way that the message board cant.
La Placa Rifa,
W. R. Logan.
Yeah. I doubt it'll affect much at all, they just want to move the board so it doesn't seem as 'official' in case people take our waffling as 'official waffle'.
is a message board a potentail source of legal problems?
even in singapore the most controlled city on earth it is at this time not a legal source of reprimand, whilst all sites are monitored it cant be used in a court of law.the normally single the offenders out and run the gaunlet of checks on them.tax investigations, hard drive content,to be honest a proper full investigation without due cause. the every one is giulty of something way .is.
seems all very sad really, when a fun place to post normally with huge pinches of salt and lots of sarcasim is considered a potentail legal problem.
but surelty a legal disclaimer makes rebellion non liable for any posts on the site. thats what MSN use.
just in case.
I don't think it's necessarily legal problems they're concerned about, more likely to be upsetting/offending people. Makes for bad PR
Well, certain websites and individuals use comments made by people on the message board and in the chat room as material for their columns on the web and in print. I assume this includes the chat room (which could have done with logs being stopped some time ago, because it effectively allows people to listen in on conversations)
If the source is quoted as the official 2000AD message board, then it (falsely) has added weight and could possibly come back to Rebellion or be seen as information endorsed by them.
There's at least one piece of information which was put forward as a theoretical situation in the chat room (and made very clear that that was the case), has been spread about and come back as news, only later to be discounted as rumour.
Basically because most comics journalism (apart from the material sourced from press releases, which you could probably make your own opinion about) from what I can see has no basis in fact, and is entirely composed of rumour, hearsay (a manufactured pop combo) and fiction.
Then again there is always room for slanderous and libellous talk on the site I suppose, but I can't imagine a lot of that, but lots of people have crazy opinions (from X product failing to 'I challeneg rebellion') which could be damaging.
The arms length thing to me seems a good idea if it's a problem as opposed to shutting it down (and shutting the readers up).
fair and reasonable comments,
taking into the context of the quoting thing.
if we keep this format.which is a pleasant one,the icons an important part i feel.
and lose the title header, it makes sense.
as long as its linked to the site by way of a simple mousse click it will be good. but i would imagine it may stop new members from jioning us.
have to be considerate of rebellions position on this of course.which is an important part of the whole equation.
which is negative.
well i'm not happy about this, once it becomes less 'official ' then it looses its heart as THE message board. surely a legal disclaimer would do the job ? or even polite hints from above e.g "stop your swearing & don't ever Diss droid-x again or youre out !"
surely the whole thing with comix is the fans? these loonie obbsessive geeks keep the things going, you seperate the professionals from the grass roots geeks, & creat elitism or extra layers of smug, & its going to die on its arse.
This board & the whole site & the way it works, has certainly seen me get more passionate about 2K than before, its increased sales of bits n bobs from me too, its kept the obbsession bit & bright, you put a layer between me & the offical world of 2K & i'll loose interest & wander off & find the heart of some other nerdy-club to play in.
To put the rumour mill to rest somewhat:
The current thinking (and indeed, the current redesign) is primarily concerned with a new look, which will be a liquid design, and reorganisation, because the sprawling site map is now too big for the current navigation. During said reorganisation, one thing that will happen is the shifting of non-Rebellion material and content into a "fan zone". This will comprise fan-oriented (i.e. non-official) things, including [fan] scripts, [fan] artwork, collections, non-official sales and the message board. The reasons are obvious and have been hinted at in this thread (control, knowing what is official content, and so on).
The original idea was to create a very different look for that part of the site, although I doubt that's now going to happen - the most likely thing will be a change of the main top graphic and a disclaimer from a certain green-skinned alien. Therefore, the fanzone will integrate seamlessly into the rest of the site, but it will still be obvious when you are within it.
(By the way, this is sort of from the horse's mouth. If you're not aware of who I am, take a look at www.snubcommunications.com.)

hmmmm ... i like it
sounds wonderful
thanks for taking the time to explain.
important question.
where does WAKE fit in. after all the wonderul hard work and commitment he has given to make this the wonderful place it is now.
has he a place in this change?
ah ha! thanks for the info mr indigo, so are you a fan or having you been spying on us all along eh eh !?
aye what about Wake & dante/barny have they been mercilessly thrown aside? we're a loyal bunch you know, break out the pitch forks boys !!!
Aye, I hope there's a place for Ma Carters little boy in the new establishment.
Um, this isn't some sort of "regime change", guys. Who do you think did the graphic design for the site you're currently using, and much of the basic organisational structure? (Clue: it was me.) :-)
Wake's role will, as far as I know, be pretty much the same as it is right now. He's not going anywhere. (That sounded way more ominous than it should have done, but you know what I mean!)
Anyway, I'm off for the evening now, so Happy New Year, everyone.
Apologies for any slight. It was, and I'm sure I speak for the others, unintentional. Glad to hear Wake will still be around. Whether he wants to be or not.
I'd love to see a new design around here, just as long as the use of Flash is kept to a minimum for us 56k'ers.
Fan zone sounds cool, any idea what other funky features will be coming our way? Perhaps a Preview page?
: ah ha! thanks for the info mr indigo, so are you a fan
: or having you been spying on us all along eh eh !?
I have a sub to 2000 AD and the Megazine and have well over 1000 issues of the weekly. I'm also a Web designer and journalist and have been working with Rebellion on this Web site in the former capacity for a few years. When I post here, it's because I'm a fan - not for spying! :) However, with this thread, I thought it wise to put the rumours to bed.
I'm not going to reveal anything about the new design itself. However, I will confirm one thing: I certainly won't be using Flash for anything I'm working on for this site.
Thank Vuck for that, my PC runs on steam and Flash does my head in at times.
Nice to see you mean well Indigo P: and congrats on keeping that quiet for so long.
Bolt-01
we get to keep the icons though right?
im a cook with free internet access.please forgive my lowly question oh mighty computer master.
The content isn't changing, just the overall look and navigation. The pages are still going to be divided into pretty much the same zones as before.
Wake
What lovely people run, design and fill this website :)
Phew !! i think thats all my neurotic fears allayed, us simple beings doth fear change you know.
all the best to the team who brighten our pathetic existances & do such a brilliant job, long may this site thrive... sob ... i wuv you guys , happy new year !
Do we have an eta for these changes?
"Soon".
How about incorporating some way of uploading images 'n stuff and making the icon creation more versatile and user friendly?
Make some guidelines about filesize and content, we're reasonable enough to keep it smooth and clean and we wouldn't put up with any nonsense from those who may abuse it.
Just a thought.
Could we have a page where people could donate money to me? You know for 2000ad and stuff? That would be great.
just a thought.

DD - Does this mean that if I say something critical about the Singaporean government, they would go all crime blitz on you?
yours resolving not to criticize lee-kuan yew just in case
GET SCARCED Floyd
last election. the oppisition MP stood up and said something to the efect of .the PM and his cronies where not going to win and he had a police report showing he had made a complaint against there actions in connection with something.
they sued for defamation( and won of course). did a full tax audit going back 14 years., raided his house and sealed it completely relocated the family and held the house in status of investigation for two years.
now and then when they arrest someone for something.they place his internet posts as part of the newspaper report,if he has said anything against the goverment.
Do you mean I should Get Scarce, as in make myself scarce and not talk about the subject?
Or do you mean I should Get Scared and start watching out for Singaporean house-sealing teams?
I had heard similar stories so thats why I asked.
yours reading about a fictional (note, FICTIONAL) intrusive, unfair totalitarian state

Sheesh, almost missed this thread.
Nicely timed as I get all the answers within minutes of the panic setting in!
I do like the way that the message board interlinks easily with other sections of the site.
Well, if it were to move, for example to www.2000ad.org I'm sure not many would notice the difference.
There are a few things on this site that are already located there. The Ecards for example. As I recall it, the www.2000ad.org domain name is owned by Wake, which he uses for non-official 2000ad website stuff. This means that Rebellion can distance themselves from it if they desire.
(If I'm off the mark, I'll stand corrected)
Er, I thought we'd established that this "jettisoning of the fan content" pretty much entailed it being in a section of the site with a slightly different design scheme and a disclaimer? No need to start worrying about complicated alternate domains.
www.2000ad.org domain name is owned by Wake
I bought it on eBay and resold it to Rebellion.
Wake
and I stand corrected.
Now I know how you can afford all that artwork Wake ;)
will we get smileys on the new bit?
