Title: The new Alan Moore
Post by: starscape on 04 January, 2004, 04:40:14 AM
Well that makes my 2004 - the Deterrent - a story written by Yours Truly - has been compared to Moore's Marvelman in the latest Fool Britannia column at Silver Bullet Comic Books website which mentions Starscape as a New Year treat!

Naturally they dismiss the appalling cover.  Done in a rush while in another country with Fleetway wanting more money if I was to use an image outside of their comics (it was going to be a collage of Leopard images).  Hey I know it was terrible - but just you wait til issue 2 (and even that pales into inignificance when you see the cover of issue 3 - drock, it's good!).

Anyway, Starscape is available from www.starscapecomic.co.uk - terrible cover or not!

(Guess I ought to put a description of the comic as a frontpage)

Starscape is a small press (at the the moment) comic that will feature new material from the likes of Jason Quinn (Spider-Man, Commando, Power Rangers, Action Man), Gary Wilkinson (2000AD, Solar Wind), Gary Simpson (2000AD, a load of other small press), Paul von Scott (Solar Wind), Grant Springford (Pest Control), Oliver Redding (Solar Wind), Ian Harrison-Davies (Solar Wind) and some new unpublished creators.  Plus there's also classic Fleetway reprints from the Leopard from Lime Street with issue 2 reprinting a Bob Monkhouse superhero strip by way of a tribute.  There's also features on UK comics and superhero cartoons.

The first issue stars: -
The Leopard from Lime Street - the origin and first appearance
the Deterrent - kind of a cross between Spider-Man, Star Wars and Elric/ Corum/ Erekose on board something akin to Battlestar Galactica.  Involves the death of a hero - a nervous rebirth and later, some quite sickening revelations about...well, we don't want to spoil it! Written by Christian Smillie (i.e. me!) and illustrated by Nic Williams
Damage Circus - kind of like a cross between Arena from the Crunch, Robot Wars, Harlem Heroes and Rollerball.  A gladiatoral contest between droids.  Full of violence with a deadly twist.  Written/ Illustrated by Argentina's Renzo Podesta
British Superhero Comics part one - a guide to the Golden Age of British superhero comics (including the revelation that my home town of Paisley had a comic shop in the 1940s - the first ever?)

Check out the website for preview art, an animated page and a screensaver.
