Like madigirl I dont see many movies, especially not on the big screen.  But on December 28 a momentous event ocurred. I took my son out to see a movie for the first time in his life. He will be four soon so I wasnt sure if he was too young.
Many suggested Finding Nemo, but I went for a double bill of the Hamutaro Movie and Godzilla,Mothra and Mecha-Godzilla SOS Tokyo, old sentimentalist that I am.
The Hamutaro movie was a movie of a tv cartoon about cute hamsters. Even by Japanese standards it was sickeningly cute and I think diabetics should have been warned off seeing it.  Roy liked what he called the funky music.
The Godzilla movie was okay - G squashed Tokyo tower and a lot of the rest of the place before being stopped by (Im not spoiling this for anyone am I) Mothra and Mecha-Godzilla.  Disturbingly for people like me who dont want Japan rearming, Mechagodzilla was staffed by heroic Self-Defence Force personnel...perhaps theres an underlying message that such nice people should be allowed to have a real army again. Perhaps not. Mothra was particularly self sacrificing and Christ-like, as giant moths go...at one point a cross appeared behind Mothras two miniskirt clad helpers as they sang a song about how heroic M was (I think thats what they were singing about)
Roy stayed awake long after bedtime for both movies and had a ball.  Am I a bad parent? Should I have gone with Nemo? Will Godzilla be back (there were only 15 people in the theatre)

cheers,

Floydzilla

NO
you are a fine parent.
disney movies. may i remind every one here.

you are four to six yeas old. you are in a dark cinema. with lots of other adults and people your own height. on screen in larger then life format is your hero.
and his parent/best buddy/differnt to him animal.
then one of them DIES!!!!!!!!!

for me it was the jungle book. sheer khan killed so i thought baloo the bear.
we all have our disney moment. when we have our heart ripped out and stamped on. the dust gets in our eyes and they begin to water. but we are big boys and girls and just try to wipe it away without any one noticing.
any one above 30 will know what im talking about.

all disney movies should come with a parental giudance warning.
godzilla was the way to go. DISNEY was a sadist.

GODZILLA will be back but only after the USA big budget movie has recouped its budget from video sales (i think it was $200m), TOEI the company that owned him are not doing so well - im not sure if they gone bust but definitely in trouble of some sort

the hamtaro are cute and im happy as long as they make the inevitable 'furby' without an option to turn it off, this is another example of NINTENDO licensing at its best and possibly the next pokemon

When I was a tiny, tiny baby my parents smuggled me in to screenings of Excalibur ands 2001: A Space Odyssey. Never did me any harm.

I never cried at any Disney films. Not even The Lion King.

I think Godzilla is great for kids, there is often not so much of that *story* element that gets in the way and has to be explained  (took my kids ages to realise how Simba "grew up" just walking along a tree bridge despite explanations)

Judge your kids reaction if you are not sure.  I find that the more fantastic something is, the more kids will realise its not real and accept.  Its the stuff thats closer to reality that is more damaging if not handled right IMHO

so far Roy hasn`t shown any negative reactions. If you want to see too cute, just type Morning Musume into google. They did the music for the (even cuter) cute hamster singing group.
Roy likes being Godzilla on the bedsheets, othewise his favourite roleplay is as Mr Freeze from Batman of the Future, freezing me.
I like being a Dad, me.
