OK, I have approximately 200 CDs, I have approximately a Ford Fiesta sized amount of space to transport my stuf to uni. I do however have a nice shiny computer with a large hard drive, so does anyone out there know any good, and preferably free, programes to convert CDs to mp3s?
That would be audio catalyst.
Pop in the cd, and voila shortly you have mp3....
Should be able to download it if you do a google search...or failing that lemme know and I'll sort ya out with it
I use the excellent (free) cdex.

Free CDs to MP3 conversion? The best for Mac AND Windows is undoubtedly iTunes. www.apple.com/itunes
Hiay, I simply downloaded a patch for my Windows player from their site, (I think it was $5) and it installs within the player an option to save files as mp3s instead of the usual WMF,I've never looked back.
btw, Magix Audio Cleaning Lab is a great little Program, import most sound signals into your PC including mp3 and export them as various media files or onto CD, it allows for cleaning, anti noise filtering etc.
On the subject of mp3s, I'm looking into getting a portable player, is the Ipod worth the investment? I hear there's a mini Ipod on the way, I really don't need 1000's of tracks on my player, but space for a few hundred to assist me on my travels and through the working day would be nice, plus a good battery life, anyone any advice for an mp3 player virgin?
Cheers
Ed
i-pods are well over-priced. i've just bought a Creative Zen NX Jukebox from Amazon - 30GB player for ?195 (cf. i-pod 10GB for ?249). Lovely.
Cor! looks good and rather tempting, how many tracks would you say 30gb holds Marbles? and I assume this holds data files etc? and is everything included, adaptors etc?
Questions Questions? :-)

The mini iPod is a waste of money. It's overpriced and has little storage. However, the other iPods are MUCH better than competing players, even if they are more expensive. The old adage is true, though: you get what you pay for.
Marbles, I've just ordered that very 30GB model! just back in stock on Amazon... hopefully it'll be here by Friday.
:-)

you won't regret it Ed, its real VFM !!!!
not as sleek as an i-pod mebbe, but at the price, whaddya want ? just feel that storage space :)
Feel it indeed, I've spent most of this evening... and now early morning ripping mp3s in preparation...
the Stranglers, The Orb, Lee Perry, Aphex Twin... I'm gonna be the most anti social person in town! (which isn't a problem if you ever catch my bus!)
Thanks for the heads up on this! :-)

My mate bought the 30GB Creative NX (from Dixons though!) and he is over-the-moon with it. It's a lovely piece of kit that we well recommends. He suggests that it's worth getting new headphones to get the most out of it though.
Cheers WoD, I've got just over 800 tracks to start with, should get it tomorrow! :-)

Ed, if you like lee perry & roots reggae/dub generally, let me know - i have shedloads of lee perry, bob marley, misty in roots, culture, steel pulse, burning spear, tons of dub stuff etc etc. i can do u an mp3 cd to upload to ure jukebox..
Hi Marbles,
Sorry to "butt in" but I wouldn't mind a dub/roots cd - maybe we could trade as I have a reasonable collection.....
Cheers

Use anything except RealPlayer, which puts loads of crap on your HD and messes about with file associations.
J-Bo-1, irritated RealOne user (need it for *my* MP3 player)
