According to the 'Koom Skreeee' list, there 196 registered users with their own icons and another 16 without icons.
Which isn't a lot, really.
When recently talking to a certain ever-youthful, blonde comic convention organiser he expressed surprise that there were really not many more than 200 of us and, of that, maybe 100 are regular posters. So since this is the only place I post on the net, I'd like to ask whether this number is normal for a forum such as ours? And is this the right kind of number or should, since we're going to be moved away from the 'official' site at some point, make efforts to boost our membership?
Also, I'd like to make a plea to all those lurkers or those who haven't posted in a long while - join us! We're a happy bunch but this place has been awfully quiet of late and we need more life!!!
Post, my friends! Post till you drop!!!!!
id second that really lms
only 200, sheesh - but u can more than maintain a site on that number, i sometimes wonder how many lurkers there are - the 2000ad review site has 26,000 on the front counter but i dont know how many of them come and go irregularly or how they work their counts out
maybe some are going to rebellion and the d vs d site, split up all over
"I'd like to ask whether this number is normal for a forum such as ours? And is this the right kind of number or should, since we're going to be moved away from the 'official' site at some point, make efforts to boost our membership?"
I'm really not sure. I'd guess that most periodicals, whether it's newspapers, magazines or comics, have a vocal, active percentage of their readership - the people who write letters or join discussion forums - but I couldn't guess what that typically is (or even if there *is* a typical figure)
A quick back-of-the-envelope calculation, using 25,000 as a rough 2000AD circulation, would suggest that the boarders here make up just below 1% of all those who read the comic.
Well, I'm a lurker without an icon!
I've been visiting the forums for a year or so, and it always seems to be busy, but I suppose now is as good a time as ever for me to pipe up.
I assume the site also keeps a record of unique visitors, so is there a way we can see how many unregistered and registered lurkers actually visit the site?
I have a feeling that the "without icons" group contains only those who are very recently registered (within the last month?) or those who have gone in the chatroom recently.
Which means there are thousands of completely unknown people watching everything we say or do.
And there's a chill in the air...
the chill breeze whistles.....
unknown, and yes the known lurkers......Da da daaaa!
I presume I'm the most frequent non-icon owwning poster?
You're getting there Krusty, slowly but surly ;)
Oooh, who knows how many untold thousands view our posts each day, who knows how many droids have a look at us and shake their heads at the silly fanboys, who knows how many new visitors are scared away by the monkey in a hat.
Erk! Board fright!
I bet I'm the scariest of them all...
It is pretty low. You also have to consider that a great deal of the Koom Skreee crowd are lapsed boarders and lurkers. There are loads of names there that I havn't seen for a long time. There are only really about 20 or 30 real regulars.

Alternatively, you might want to read my rebuttal to this rumour in the "Jettison message board" thread.
IIRC, the list you're referring to only deals with people that use that chat. After all, I've posted here since the previous redesign and do not appear on that page at all.
Would it be more useful if Koom Scree only showed people who have posted on the message board or used the chat room within the last 2 months, instead of showing all usernames with icons, plus everyone who has been in the chat room without an icon in the past month?

Hello
I used to be Mikey.I used to post a lot more.I used to have more free time in woik.I was Dredd,I was Lobster, now I'm Dredd again
I think about 200 is pretty good but what the hell do I know about forum figures?
H
Hi All, I've been "lurking" since DreddCon last December, I've posted a couple of times but find I've not got alot of time to post and read all the posts from everyone else. I've found the board quite entertaining and informative and I'll carry on "lurking" and posting occasionally, I've been a reader of 2000AD and the Meg both from issue 1, and its great to know that there are loads of others out there just like me!!
One thing I want to know is what all you guys (girls) do for a living that allow you all this time to spend on the Board?
>One thing I want to know is what all you guys (girls) do for a living that allow you all this time to spend on the Board?
I've got the messages as e-mail option selected so that instead of having to wade through the board I just work through the mail in my 2000AD Message Board Folder.
La Placa Rifa,
W. R. Logan.
Logan that is the insane option !
wake, maybe icon koomskree-ers for the last year even? theres some up there who havent shown up in 15 months i been here.
work? i think there is more weekday than weekend posters? yes, office people with skive time, & self employeds like me with chaos work hours.
I've set the cutoff to a year for boarders and greys. However, since I've only just set the site to record the latest posting time by username on the messageboard, there are some people in the 'Where are they now' section who have posted on the board recently, but not been in the chat room.

Personally it was having to go through a chatroom to get an icon that put me off getting one for so long. And I never go into the chatroom.
I think Bou is right, there have been times when over the weekend this board has been practically dead.
So, Where is Tharg now then?
I have a pc and an office at work, and i'm a lazy f**ker, that's why i'm always about! I mostly have gigs and hangovers at the weekends, and by the time i've caught up on me e mails, i have to get up and do something else!
I bet i'm the most annoying. Lets have another sing-song...
Lend me some sugar I AM YOUR NEIGHBOUR!
ta-ra, xTGx
singing is good. what about the wingey-est? can i have a prize please?
Ive thought about this topic a fair bit and to be honest can only come to one of the following conclusions....
1. Maybe we arent as welcoming and as nice as we all like to think and therefore people are put off.
2. Ive statred posting on a couple of other message boards and although this one is failry intuitive, others have bells and whistles which make ours look very basic. Maybe this puts people off.
3. Our views dont reflect others and we aree cliquey
4. there arent as many people buying 2000ad as wed like to think
Now I think that about covers it. Personally Id want as many people as possible to post to the board, more 2000ad fans means more mates or something like that.

On the suject of what I do...
I am a Server engineer and have more than one pc on my desk at work. One is used for Web Based Research (nice one Art), Training, mail, etc and has a normal Login account. I have another PC thats used for Work. So I can do both simultaneously. Sort of.
At home I have a BB connection, but I use this less due to a new years resolution and the fact that my BB is sometimes ropey.
Yer Slips
i post more when im inbetween jobs or bumming it in the agencies
(which is worse than dole believe me, but they pay u loads of money to do absolutely nothing as lomng as u stand there and look clever - which is hard for me)
i have been wondering about this, how many people have multiple subs
(or do u think a lot of shops are on big multiple subs deals)
i am onder the impression that around 30,000 are printed, maybe they dont all sell thru
but its true that only a small percentage actively participate in things like this and the board does look very old
"we aree cliquey"
As a fairly new boarder I have to say I've found this to be the case for the longtime boarders.
Though i will say the board is initially welcoming and friendly.
On the what do i do front: I'm a Concept Artist who at the moment designs Video games. My work is split between a drawing board and the computer so i sneak in to have a peek at the board far too often for my job security.
I personally have not found the board to be cliquey, but then I also have to admit to hanging around any other boards, I spend too much time on this one as it is.
As to where I access from, My job is in the NHS working in infection control. For this they have been kind enough to give me my own office and laptop. I am left largely to my own devices so long as I produce the goods, as they say, and so keep dipping into tihs board for the fun. If I did go to other boards I wouldnt have time to do any work.
Do you really think so? (Aware that rhetorical questions come out as sarcasm, I'd better point out this is genuine curiosity).
I started out posting here in July, after lurking for a month or so. In 6 months I've never found the old lags to be anything other than welcoming. Any time I haven't "got" a reference to something, I've asked and received about half-a-dozen clarifications.
As with any crowd, there are people I really like and people I don't have very high opinions of, but as a group I have to say this lot are welcoming, friendly, and tame.
Apart from King Trout of course, but he's an evil seagoing freshwater fish with plans for world domination so I guess taming him's beyond our collective powers.
I'm not saying the board isn't friendly.
But there is a core of folks who know each other, i presume have met and use in-jokes and self references that a lot aren't privy to.
Whether this is a good or bad thing is up to the individual.
If i have to make a personal preference I'd say it's kind of irrelivant as long as you enjoy or are stimulated by what you read; but it is there.
My job is in the NHS working in infection control.
For this they have been kind enough to give me my own office.
Funniest post - EVER!
...Dudley
Yeah, I really don't think this board is cliquey. There are times when it might look that way - but that's because there's a lot of people here who've (virtually) known each other for a while now - it's more a group of regulars rather then a clique.
And that is down to the individual: post more regularly & you'll be thought of as a regular (well duh!)
There's no 'you can't join our gang' policy.
There is also no mob viewpoint - even the most regular of regulars disagree over which thrills are the best and the colour and/or presence/absence of Rogue's nads*
eg I like Sinister Dexter & Dead Meat.
* they're not "in-jokes" they're just "old-jokes-that-won't-die" - everyone is welcome to join in with them. What's your opinion on Rogue Trooper's reproducive abilities?
As an addition to my previous list,
5. There are too many offtopics?
Im not saying that we cant have any, but sometimes we discuss "pikey" rather than say Slaines poor story hidden by gloriuos technicolour, but somehow flat art......
All the threads we discuss at length dont on the whole tend to be comic related.
Yer Slips
Dudley: Wasn't ment to be funny....
but on re-reading I see what you mean :p

But isn't the problem that most posters on this board (definitely including myself) lack the artistic or literary know-how to analyse ad infinitum the merits of particular strips? Most posts are an advance on "IT SUCKS!" or "IT ROCKS!", but it's not like many people can talk about gouache(sp?) vs photoshop in comic strip art for very long
...I'd just written the above and I had a blinding flash of inspiration.
See the new thread I'm posting in a second...
I find alt.comics quite a bit more cliquey than this place. I felt at ease here from day one, but I've never really felt at home there. It's alright and all that- and I've had a few laughs- but most of those laughs are had with people who post here too.
One or two people over there need to get out more- or at the very least, preach a bit less. IMHO, of course.
Thank you.
Tanky, in the annoying-ness stakes you are a rank amateur compared to me.
hey Johhny ! just cos youve had a honey moon! some of us can't get out very much you know!
re cliques; smuggness does go up after conventions where new alligences & heirachies of cliquedom are forged, but then squabbling also goes up after cons when people have had their ilusions shattered.
forming groups is human nature, its a saftey zone thing, i think we work hard here not to be exculsive or shitty about it. i mean lets face it it would be abnormal to be bestest mega budds with everyone who turned up here, i mean they could be some nazi-paedo-pimp-crack-ho' for all we know. in-jokes are merely a form of bonding between trusted ( or mildly dubious ) board mates, and also a means of clique jumping on for new folk..
Cliques are for geeks..I know from my wife constantly telling me to shut because i'm embarrassing her that I am self opinionated..its also doubtful that I will ever be remembered for my diplomacy..but I dont think I am a bad person..I hope I dont genuinely upset any other boarders in the future with any threads I post, but I feel strongly about cliques and intellectual bullying..yes I think there are some lurkers who could well be put off from replying or posting on the board especially if they feel intimidated by a volume of opinion that differs from what they purport..even more so if the replies are tinged with 'sarcasm' and are especially well wrote..we could all do to remember that were all part of the gene pool and can swim wherever we like
i dont do the clique thing,
its strange but i just remembered i actually posting when agrivar posted a few things that went against the grain but i agreed with them
i think there might be an underlying few cliques here, but there are several factions
it mostly only rears its ugly head when someone starts doing something to deliberately annoy people (like mr rennie who is deliberately trying to lower the sales of jd megazines with his columns)
Hello Scottie! This question deserves its` own thread really. I work as an ESL teacher in Japan at a lot of places which allow free internet access between classes. Right now my students are doing a test so I`m alternately typing this and glowering authoritatively at them
cheeers,
(glower, glower)
