Oh Lawdy.
Lots of people are telling me about the adds on Channel Four for Garth Marenghi, probably Britain's greatest horror writer of the 20th century (after Hutson and Herbert maybe).
I saw his act (Garth Marenghi's Fright Night) twice at the Edinbrough comedy festival and it was great. If you like or dislike horror (or even don't have much of an opinion, then it's worth a watch.
Unfortunately no-one knows when its on...
this chap had an exhibition of his work once on blackpools golden mile.
it was one of those back of an upstairs arcade horror walk through style exhibits.
lots of stuff from his movies.props, pictures,
clips etc.i did not know who he was.
circa 92 or 93 i think it was.
i had not heard of him before nor since till these threads.
That's cos he's the Perrier Comedy Award winning creation of comedian Matthew Holness.
Steev
Wish I'd gone the following year and seen Netherhead as well now.
Thanks toi the C4 web page I still don't know if this will be a one-off, a series, or when it's on.
Link: Garth's waiting for you in terrorland...
From the ads it looks to me like a one-off. Holness (who I believe is related to (son of?) the great Bob Holness, the first man to play James Bond and blockbusters quizmaster) has already started on other projects and is rumoured to be fairly bored with Marenghi. It's like when Simon Munnery abandoned Alan Parker Urban Warrior before doing the big TV series - silly man.
Well, he's been doing Garth for at least 5 years before it hits the TV screens, so you'd expect that.
It's be a shame if he abandoned him though, I reckon he'll be really popular.
Whatever happened to Simon Munnery? I remember seeing his Urban Warrior show years ago in some tiny little venue at the Edinburgh Festival.
Last saw Mummery doing his League against Tedium(?) thing very late night on BBC2 a couple of years ago... checked out his web page at the time and he seemed very cynical and pissed off over the impossibility to do anything interesting on the telly (see also TMWRNJ). Presume he's now jacked it in.
No, he's not jacked it in - actually had quite a successful Edinburgh this year with a sort of jaded character called, erm, "Simon Munnery", which he absolutely insists is a character and not just himself despite the complete one-to-one resemblance of names, looks, dress sense, politics, blah...
I saw a preview of that show headlining a comedy night. I got about 5 people along on the basis of "see genius's new show"...and he stunk the place out.
He's also touring occasionally with "Buckethead", which is him lying onstage, with a bucket over his head, talking through it into a microphone.
A mate of mine got him to revive "Alan parker" for a one-off, and it's still great.
I think he's a regular feature at the comedy nights at the pub round the cprner form where I work.

Thursday 29th January, 10:35pm Channel Four
I imagine that if you had a Garth Marenghi Watch, it would tell you.
M@
Well, I was there, where were you?
I'm not ashamed to say I shat myself at the full frontal terror that was on the screen before me.
Not since Sapphire and Steel have I seen such a classy exposition of fear stamped upon my frontal lobes and even then, Dark Place was substantially more scary than the episode where there was a man with no face.
I'm off to clean myself up, I'll probably be doing the same next week. Terror has that effect on me, but then who isn't allergic to mind numbing fear?
As Dean Learner said 'It's the most significant TV event since Quantum Leap, and I don't say that lightly'
A Good Shite Night Fright to you all...
Paul
(Writer of several well recieved Garth Marenghi internet fan fiction pieces)
PVS thank you for the link, that is very funny. He reminds me of quite a few people
A bit too Acorn Antiques for me. The flame-throwering of the coffin and the comment after was funny though.
It was genius.
Although there was tons of obvious gags there was a lot of subtle stuff too (like all the 'buddy' stuff)
But if he does'nt do an episode in a quarry I'm gonna kill him.
Um, anyone know when its repeated?
It's back next week... same horror channel same horror hour.
Dunno, willing to send a tape on a cosmic journey of fear to be passed around those who missed it though.
You can also miss one as they are fairly self contained I think.
Was superb that was. A lovely mix of Spaced, Twin Peaks, 70's Cop/Hospital/Hospital Cop shows and umm Garth Marenghi I suppose.
This may be of interests... esp for those wannabe horror writers out there (hello Gordon) as it contains "My Top Tips for Writing Terrifying Telly and Not Getting Gypped"

Trailer tonight for a new drama Wire in the Blood starring the short-arsed Geordie one from Robson and Jerome that looks more than slightly Darkplace inspired.
I've watched it about 3 times now, I'm trying not to burn out on it.
Garth is Garth, what's more to be said.
Madeline Wool is loverly, she was very funny in Orcadia (Live RPG comedy!) and was funny in the live version.
The Dean Learner character is just great, in the hospital and out. Also in the live version.
Julian Sanchez is the big new character, he's great, better than great. I wish I had a best buddy like him.
I'm started to worry about you now Paul...
Still that new Soul thing on the Beeb... it looks Garth-tastic!
Saw the trailer for this week's - "Subtext is for cowards".
"Bestest Slogan Evah!"
It's getting dark, there isn't much time left, they're coming for me, I'll just say...
Garth Marenghi will scaring the shite out of us with his Darkplace again tonight at:
10:30pm tonight (Thursday) Channel 4
Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
The hospital chef is attacked with a ladle and everyone assumes there is an unknown assailant on the loose, but their theories leave no room for the strange occurences elsewhere in the building. Can Dr Rick Dagless get to the bottom of it all?
Looking forward to tonight - have you got your white coat, PVS?
No long now... I'm getting my old specs out...
I'm about to initiate a Garth Marenghi virgin...
Funnily enough Paul I was just about to email you to say someone's already made a programme about Quisling - and you know about it already!
Link: STARSCAPE
Wow. This is ACE!
Flipping Chicken...! It was even better than last week.
"YOu don't look at the strings at a puppet show!"
That was fucking great :-)
Anyone know how many more episodes we're going to get (there are 50, after all :-))
Only four more, isn't it?
yeah, it's six in the series
Thanks GC, Gary - I just found synopses for the other four episodes. If you don't want to know, look away now...

Only 6??? Criminal! Oh well....
It was bloody good though wasn't it!
I've stared running in slow motion everywhere... it makes you look more heroic somehow.
Channel Four should be given awards for best scheduling on a Thursday night ever. Father Ted! Garth Marenghi! Six Feet Under! Great!!!!...
Watch it, Gary - you'll be tearing open your shirt and crying manfully next...
"A whisk, a ladle and a spatula. Don't worry though, I think I can hold them off."
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
>you'll be tearing open your shirt and crying manfully next
What? You mean there's men who don't do this?
Well i'm known to do it on occasion
Garth Marenghi is on again tonight (Thursday) on Channel 4 at 10:30pm. It's pretty damn funny, why aren't you watching it?
Because its only 18.24. Why must I wait?!
Thank god you reminded me - I've been looking forward to it for days then nearly forgot!! I'll be about later to go 'WOW' etc
That was good....
Not quite as good as last weeks, but still one of the funniest things on TV. I really enjoyed it!
Hilarious!
Nah, better than last week. But then last week I'd hyped myself up a bit too much.
Several laught out load moments again...
"Romford was the cruelist city..." Now that's how to start a novel!
"Killed by wasps".
Thornton Reed just has to appear on screen to make me laugh...
Oh, and his comment on his twins:
'I couldn't shake the fear that one of them might eat the other. They didn't, which I put down to good parenting.'
And later on:
'I always wanted a son. I have four daughters. While I don't hate them, don't resent them, I...... I don't feel that they're really on my side...'
I liked the bit with the randomly placed Garth Marenghi novel.
"It has shaken my preconceptions of the genre."
Did anybody tape the first one and is willing to part with it for a week or so? I missed it and it's driving me nuts!!
(Bump)
Reminder for anyone interested who keeps missing it - Tonight, Ch4 at 10:30
Has anyone been taping this? I'm out on Thursdays and my video's knackered so I haven't seen any of them :(
I caught last weeks on E4 last night, so I guess they are repeating it. I'll have to wait for them to repeat the whole lot before I see the first one though.
From Garth Marenghi's 'Netherhead':
"That night they did all the positions.
Woman on top.
Doggy style.
...And normal".
The best bit from Skipper the Eye Child, though, has to be at the beginning when that male patient was being buggered by a Fomorian sea-demon...
No, wait - it was a giant eye-ball, wasn't it? That was bloody hilarious!
Especially funny was the way they pixilated out the puppet's schlong, and Dean complaining that the censorship had compromised the episode's artist integrity. Genius!
"It's a future-shock that will shit you up!"
Hmmm...
"Chat with Garth and Dean on Thursday 19 February 2004 at 11.05pm"
Stage an invasion?

"A future shock that'll shit you up."
Definitely a quote to remember. :)
And now its got monkeys in nazi hats, armed with schmeisers...
I'm there!
*floods of tears*
I even set an alarm.... an alarm!!
And I missed it
WWWWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!
Look at the speed of that chat!
I can't get in the chat. Everyone get out of the chat and make room for me.
"Has anyone been taping this? I'm out on Thursdays and my video's knackered so I haven't seen any of them :("
I've been taping it from the start, I showed some foresight, what were you thinking, if you were thinking that is?
I have a tape full of Garth Menreghi's hideous vison, you don't. In my books that makes me substantially better than you.
And my video isn't broken. Though it was a while back, which caused some concern.
PVS - everyone in the chat is making fun of you.
Especially Dean.
Some great chopper action this week
Monkeys in hats monkeys in hats
Bwah-ha-ha-ha
The appearance of monkeys-in-hats about half way through was, indeed, a futureshock that shat me up.
Just caught the end of an interview with Garth and Dean Learner on T4:
Dean: (talking about the C4 people who refused to show the programme back in the 80s) He's Probably crying into his prescription tranquilisers - a lot of these guys are on it. I'm sure you get by without tranquilisers, but I certainly need them.
Presenter: So you came to Channel 4 and you've been fighting for it ever since.
Garth: Well we handed over the tapes and we said "can you put this out?" and they said "well we didnt ask for it"
Dean: "We didn't "Commission" it" was the word they used.
Presenter: Cos you paid for it yourself didnt you?
Dean: I paid for it myself, out of my own wad. I said "we spent two months making it". I spent a million - a lot of the money I don't think made it onto the screen, but a million pounds spent on catering, entertainment, that kind of thing.
Presenter: I hear 6 people died during filming.
Garth: That's right. 6 people officially died and there were many more that have yet to be accounted for. Some went missing, some inhaled fumes, some collapsed under the statue of the inside of my head.
Not long now Garth fans....
In the meantime you can read the Chat Transcript
"Dean Learner : Plus I have a job lot of green food colouring lying around in the restaurant of Deano's (my bar) which we could use very inexpensively."
Link: A chat log that will shit you up...
Just bringing this to the top to remind people.
Channel 4, tonight, 10.35.
"Monkey *bastard* hands!"
"To kill our Queen and destroy our lives, that's what every Scotchman wants!"
"If someone has to die, it might as well be a techie..."
My new official catchphrase :-)
Am I the only person who doesn't like this.
Watched it tonight, it's just bad.
I know it's trying to emulate the likes of Saphire and Steel, The Tomorrow People and other early 80's sci-fi/horror/guff and the like, but it just comes across as just bad.
Bad as it is, it's Citizen Kane compared to 'Dare to Believe'
Don't forget, final episode tonight at 10.30 on Ch4. Featuring space broccoli, soft-rock ballads and brain-shitting fear.
not sure about the whole series, but last night's episode finished the show's run on top form.
IIRC "The only reason I got into medicine was for the laughs, that, and the pussy and that dried up years ago- if you get my meaning"
I thought it was a great end to the series, roll on the dvd and another series!
Anyone tries to take my rod, they'll have to fight me for it.
It was alright, but in my mind the series really peaked with "The Apes Of Wrath"...
!Bastard Monkey Hands!"
A letter in the Radio Times points out the fact that Garth Marenghi is an anagram of 'Argh! Nightmare!'
Heh, I worked that out a while back. My brain has the processing power of about 3 ZX81's.
Garth's got a mailing list...
Link: Join his minions....
cannot believe i only discovered this in the last episode...laughed my arse off...
