I apologise in advance for being a preachy twat...

I've never really agreed with killfiling- especially on this forum (where people are generally a lot more tolerant and a bit more courteous for some reason) as even a total wanker will say something worth listening to every now and then.  That said, I've got to tell you that the last couple of days have been sheer bliss compared to the few before it.

Everybody deserves a chance- but how many chances do you give somebody who is blatantly just being a prick?

I don't even think it's worth talking about any more- either killfile or ignore.  I can tell you from experience that arguing with somebody who's in a lot of killfiles will ensure that you end up in them as well.  People don't want to read shit- even if it's second hand.  He'll either get the message and stop acting like a nob or, if he's a genuine troll (which I think he is), will piss off soon enough anyway.

Apologies again for being one of the converted preachy types I often complain about- but I know it's pissing a lot of people off.  We were all having a good laugh this time two weeks ago.  Now we're not.  It doesn't take a genius to figure out why- no matter how much our new resident wanker protests...

I await a panning from all corners- but there's no need.  This thread doesn't really need any replies.

I think DD makes an excellent point here, we do what we need to do.  Killfile, ignore, whatever.

There are 6 people on this site who I actively dislike, and 147 I actively like.  

Even though one of the people I dislike posts many threads that provoke a lot of discussion, I simply try to ignore that person.  

On occasion good points are made on threads that they started, and then I will get involved in the discussion, always trying to be careful not to respond to reply directly to any of the 6 people I dislike.

What helps me in this newfound serenity is the knowledge that a lot of people who put messages up on this board feel exactly the same way about me.

Without replying to anyone in particular, this all aches of cliquey, snotty, intellectual-geek-ism, peppered with chronically insecure egos and over-authoritative attitudes simply unable to handle a forthright view from an "outsider", and descending into personal abuse when their comfortably smug opinions are questioned or challenged.

I supppose given the medium and the subject involved here one should not be too surprised:-

I mean, the internet is the specialist weapon of the geek, isn't it? The world is at your burning fingertips where you can type like a God and form secure, "knowing" relationships with other similarly withdrawn fellows many miles away, all from the comfort of your own imaginary castle.

And Sci-Fi has to be the most uptight, snobby fictional subject there is; many over-zealous followers seem to encase themselves in a brittle bubble of knowledge and allow in only those able to pass their tests of superior pontification and who follow their thought-trains with little dissent.

There are those in here I have disagreed with or who have disagreed with me who do not need to descend into ridiculous episodes of exaspirated name-calling and lynch-mobbing, but for the handful of unhappy souls who are sobbing into their keyboards at every word I type I say this:-

I am here to talk about my favourite comic and anything else relevant warranting a discussion, and this board seems like a top place to do that in spite of the silliness that has emerged. I'll post on your threads, you post on mine, and we'll see if we can get back on track discussing subjects like adults instead of children.

i dont have a castle. i have huge kitchens with lots of uneducated people i have to shout at often. im far from withdrawn. trust me.coming here is great enjoyable part of my day.its made reading 2000ad and the meg an even greater experience.

There's no-one on this site i dislike 'cos i don't know anyone here except by what they type and that's hardly a window onto their soul.

Won't be killfiling anyone 'cos that would make it like attending a discussion forum with a mute present who's obviously got something to say. I want all sides.

If people are going to kill file RC why the song and dance about it? Taking the oft quoted pub metaphor. Don't just ignore, walk away. well i have to say, thats the first time ive ever ever seen DD get cross with anyone. luckily i can 't see why, or i'd have another warp spasm.

in my village we have 3 pubs, one is fairly empty cos of dress code, no swearing code etc, no-one is comfortable there.

the other two are fairly empty because fights break out & the regulars are nob-end pub-trolls, so what do you do, walk out the door & never go there? or somebody deal with it?
i tried one night, to split up a fight which at that point had local bloke smashing knife-psychos head off floor, in the lounge, in front of kids... the bar man stood quietly behind the bar doing nothing, my blows were useless, a bucket of cold water would have been better, so i left em to it & phoned police, it then turned into a 3 hour (wait for police) knife seige situation...

thats that pub lost another many customers for ever... moral of story, why the hell didnt the barman, stop serving the drinks to psycho, stop local meathead winding up psycho, take charge , phone cops sooner...

moral of story, if you always walk away , you run out of places to go.

Very true - which hints to me that this board could be a haven for folk unable to express themselves elsewhere, hence the almost hysterical retorts to some posts they do not like.

The comparison with the internet to real-life violent situations is a bit harsh, though.

Although having said that, aforementioned `peeps` may well feel like 'knife-psycho' equivalent antics are occurring here, such is their relentless requirement for their idea of "law-and-order" within this website...

RC doesn't have a knife, he has words.

He's not threatening to kill anyone.

He can't harm you physically.

Nothing's being harmed here except egos (And i don't mean that to imply people are full of themselves, just egos; Pride etc.)

abusive boarders should be dealt with by losing their membership,, but as far as i can see rc does not use abuse to argue with.

other boarders seem to have abused him, however.

I think that's the problem in one, Sleekdog.  Abusive boarders are actually quite easy to deal with via the killfile.  

Wind-up merchants who insist on having the last word always seem reasonable until their posts have built up to such an extent that they've alienated almost everybody.

One man's wind-up merchant insisting on having the last word is another man's perfectly reasonable chap not letting the stiffies in here shout him down because they think they own the site.

I think when Sleek used the word petty he/she mabye meant "literally" [right, Floyd? ;)], i.e. an inessential act by a narrow-minded, mean, or small-natured disposition or character - not its frequency of use.

i try and do my level best to reply to every thread, i dont have much time on my hands at the minute but i dont like it when u put a thread up and no one replies

i try and give my decent and honest opinion, but as i reply to more threads and more of my opinions are out there i have no doubt i am more likely to offend people with an opinion than others (but i have a healthy sense of humour so)

i also think its important that my opinions regarding 2000ad are recorded bcos

a) i never used to send that little 5 vote token when they had it (one of my mates used to buy 2 copies so he could cut one out and i think they did base opinions on the results of these) - which some of my favourites the creators never knew i liked them

b) i dont have time to write a letter

i am unsure as to whether anyone from 2000ad listens to anything that goes on here, i doubt it

i like talking off topic about other comics and things non2000ad as well

(I think the boses of 2000AD would be daft not to pay at least a passing interest in the views of the members of this site - it's not the full readership, but it is a dedicated bunch of people willing to talk day after day about their comic.)

Tulkas - i don't think we've ever conversed, but that's 2 posts in a row where i agree entirely with what you're saying, so i'm using this as a jump-on point to give me 2 cents worth

i am so bored by all this mindless rubbish. If rc is attempting to wind everyone up, then he's won. well done. But he may not be - some people do have strong opinions and want to fight their corner. i'm not for or against him, just bored by what's going on at the moment.

there are obviously a few raw nerves being rattle by the possible appearence of the-one-who-must-not-be-named, and i remember the cool reception i got when first coming on because (i later found out) people thought i was him (although in retrospect, a username like 'youthinkthisisntme?' might raise eyebrows)

anyway, the 'establishment' are very protective of the board, and this sometimes manifests itself into what appears to be a 'it's my ball' situation. I respect the opinions of Logon, PVS, The Watcher etc (as 3 examples), but don't feel that i have to agree all the time or reply with posts virtually high-fiving their comments. I simply read, post once in a while, try to have a laugh, and attempt to reconcile my (allegedly) geeky passion by sharing my thoughts with others of the same ilk

rc - if you are winding people up, it's worked. i won't be killfiling you (or anyone), i just won't reply if i don't want to

Actually, Im probably part of the establishment (although Im not quite sure what that means) and I too grow tired of this.  So Thinky hold the door for me.  If rc is on the windup as Thinky has suggested, hes managed to wind up two of the nicest people Ive met on this board (Jared and Devons Daddy); so I take it hes succeeded.  We seem to have been dragged down to that level now.

Unfortunately this site has gone down hill recently, probably due to the lack of posting on topic (yes Im probably as guilty as others) and possibly going as far back as the Big Brother threads, which in retrospect were a very bad idea.  

Im going to be away from the site for a while, Im on a training course all next week, so Ill probably not post too much.  Ill skim read when I have time and see how its going, but there is and has been too much flak going on here and that makes it a less enjoyable place to be. I to do not use kill-files (one exception and we know who he is)

Please try and keep on topic, please try not to be antagonised and Ill pass you over to rc, who'll want the last word (probably about how hes standing up to us all and la la la de da zzzzzzz) ......

You see, i feel the troll has won. wether we argue or killfile not being the point. The most disapointing thing for me in this fiasco is lack of solidarity or directness on the whole..

speaking personally, within my 2nd or 3rd response to RC, when i politely tried to explain why his behavior was inflamatory etc etc, asked that should i ever step out of line, people would tell me. If i'm wrong, or being a pain, for gruds sake tell me. Friends do that, they tell it straight, stick up for me or tell it straight & tell me to back off. This friendliest place on the web hasnt been.. i feel like so many people have turned their backs, shoffled of, stomped off, moaned & made preachy generalised backstabbing critisisms..

friends (after family) are the bestest best things ever, worth fighting & going the extra mile for, wether its 3D friends or wierdly 2D computer friends ( some of course are both ), i expect friends to tell me straight or stick up for me, which is what i do. I'm very saddened that the troll has bust up this sense of community. My 3D pals wouldve grouped together & frogmarched the trouble maker out so damn fast ( & bikker about the rights  wrongs together afterwards ). They'd never let anyone speak to me in an insulting manner, nor me them.

it was  step to far. so in my own way. i di frog march him out. the kilfile made the baord a better place again. those strong enough to ignore him.plus the majority o us :~) i like to think so.who did killfile his nonsense have banded together.

I'm away for what, two weeks? And the board has almost been destroyed!! That'll teach me. Reading through a few of the other threads, this 'rc' is obviously a total prat, and I killfiled him without thinking twice. If he's caused people to leave and caused some of the bonds here to be weakened, then it's a real shame. I've missed all this, so I'll continue to post here when I can, and I hope that people won't leave.

I used to read every single post on the board, but obviously now there are some that I just ignore. I still have my favourites though, and I read everything that they post. Sad, I know. :)

This is a really upsetting thread. For what it's worth, I reckon anyone who wants to should killfile rather than leave. It seems like the bloke in question's pretty much talking to himself as it is. However, i also think that maybe we should give him a set amount of time to settle in and if he's still causing this much upset, a ban should be in order. This is just one womans opinion, but i don't like to see people i've come to regard as friends getting this distressed and if i can help, then i wanna

All of this can't be pleasant for you either, rc. I know it's not nice to come to any site and be faced with a load of abuse, regardless of who started it or who it's aimed at. And no matter what you think of the boarders here, you're hurting them. And that's not going to help anyone.

There are a lot of people in the world and if everyone agreed on everything, that'd just be boring.

Well, all this talk about 'frog marching' and 'blooded noses' is indicative of massive insecurities. Unfortunately, i do know what I'm talking about.

Having spent my former career dealing with the kind of stereotypes Bou uses in the 'this happened to me one night at my local 2 bit boozer' anecdotes. I find myself fascinated with online social interaction, mainly due to the fact that there is absolutely NO physicality.

So look at it this way, in many ways rc has shown himself to be a 'heavyweight' and by uniting in a war on cyber terrorism, many of YOU (not "us" ok PVS ?) have displayed the classic signs of what I termed earlier as the mob mentality.

I say this not as one of your close friends, nor as part of any clique. I wouldn't spit champagne on any of your rad-fires, including rc.

So what right do I have posting up my critique ?Merely as an observationalist,,ism..thing

And for the sake of any younger readers who may stray on to the board from time to time, perhaps implied threats or harping on about how 'hard' you are really isn't the way forward. Obviously that's only my opinion, do as thou wilt.

Besides, in cyberspace no one can hear your knuckles crack.

I'm not really here enough or would know how to use the killfile function but after reading several threads here recently I can see why some people here would.

I often consider what people visiting or lurking this site may think of any clashes, it may well scare them off posting, generally I find this a good natured site and it's refreshing.

As an ex-moderator and forum regular elsewhere I've seen this kind of crap numerous times and then some...

I was (so I'm told) respected on my other site, I brought everything I knew about my chosen subject to the site and was considered a nice guy, then it started, emails from trolls telling me they were happy my Dad had died and that my mother killed him, nice eh,
Accusations about listening into Yahoo chatroom conversations (I'm no tek head but this is impossible me thinks?) well it is at 4am in my sleep, and so net/forum stalkers slowly crushed a great site, most appeared and posted on topic and then show their true colours and then BANG.

I actually got the following email this morning after posting a message about my upcoming website on another board:

Like I said I've seen much what's going on here happen before today, this site isn't going down the pan at all, this matter may be a problem but it's something that can be sorted out.
I may not know many of you and don't contribute much here or get much response, but can I suggest the regulars don't stay away and use the killfile if you need to, it's the good guys and gals and spirit who keep places like this alive, trust a veteran.

Just to make it clear:
I know exactly what ed's talking about, not because I belong to some secret gang or anything, but because I used to post on the board he moderated.
And he's right. This sort of thing, when it gets to a certain level, will hammer a board into submission. But I'm of the belief that it will pass. Either everybody will calm down and settle into the board, or get bored (that was clever, eh?) and go away.

Hiya mate, no girlfriend right now but (but always keep my remaining eye open lol) DJing Fri/Sat night certainly provides me with eye candy on the non gay variety.

Lisa on the site used to follow me around and we'd flirt, she's a really sweet and generous lady but I got hassle for it all while others did the same thing and it did but pressure on me amid the other nonsense going on there.

The sad thing is some of these losers now post on another site, talk about emoticons and crap and nothing on topic, so now out of boredom calling people like me is back in fashion, in their ignorance they don't realise they brought the site down, perhaps one day they will look back on their vileness and consider they were wrong and could have considered people's feelings.

btw my good pal for nearly 28 years "Mike" is gay, it's never been a big deal and it's his business, perhaps me liking women is weird to him, I think people who mail and post the crap using gay terminology as a weapon my have deeper issues within themselves, some inner fears etc.

The amount of humanity involved in the medium clearly varies from person-to-person, but just remember on here you are generally conveying your thoughts through typed words and that is all - it is much easier to casually insult other users through the net than it is in real life, for just that reason.

The amateur psychology is only used as a means of belittling people, which in itself is interesting if you are willing to resort to a little psychology of your own.

Well, for what my opinion is worth (ha!), I'm finding myself slowly losing whatever peculiar sense of fun this little community once had.  

I have to say (with the very specific caveat that I don't read absolutely everything that comes through here, *definitely* don't digest any of it with religious fervour, and therefore could quite conceivably have missed something truly nasty) that it isn't *just* the sudden appearance of this RC bloke who's fucked things up, in my mind.  Yes, he's a bit noisier than the normal "must say hello nicely" new arrival (from what I've seen), yes, he's being deliberately provocative (from what I've seen) but... well, it's a bit sad if those two things are crimes.  

I dunno.  I'm not about to crawl up on a soap box and start admonishing everyone for x, y or z.  I just at the back of my mind have this rather romantic notion that 2000AD (which might not represent solely *why* everyone comes to this board, but it certainly represents the... the "lowest common denominator" factor in our lives that we all share) is partly about challenging the status quo, thinking about things in a different way, accepting new and freakish ideas on their merits (or lack thereof).  Also guns, robots, mutants and boobs.

Without in any way throwing my hat into either of what is rapidly becoming the "rc corner" or the "everyone else corner", this community, for all its many many many virtues, has often reacted in an embarrasingly closed fashion to new people, new ideas, new stories, new anything.  I think it's brilliant that we *can* consider ourselves to be a 'community', rather than just a disparate group of individuals bouncing things around, but with the notion of community comes the responsibilty of community, and there's no doubt in my mind that a lot of things, events, people, etc etc, could have been handled a lot better.  Speaking for myself, I find it particularly gloomy when there *seems* to be what can only be described as a 'bandwagon' mentality.  It doesn't happen often, but when it does.... fwofty me, it *snowballs*.

What I'm getting at is this: As someone who skims across the vast majority of the messageboard, dips into the chatroom whenever a distraction from work is required and is generally only ever up for using the board as a means of grabbing some *entertainment* or exploring something of *interest*, I think I have a pretty fair idea of how this place would look to an 'outsider': ie - one of the many, many, many, many, *many* fans of 2000AD who lurk without posting, skim without digesting religiously, and haven't quite made up their minds about whether to become a fully fledged member of the community.  And, to be frank, if I was one of those people, I wouldn't *want* to be part of the community at the moment.  And, sorry, but that can't *all* be heaped on rc's shoulders.

But hey, that's just my view.  It could be wrong.

El Spurioso is dead on there about 2000AD - the comic - inspiring minds more than the usual bland topics to be discussed on the internet. Or at least it should do.

In fact, I've little more to add to the rest of his post - I can't say much more about the problems I've experienced with certain users, and all the antagonists should know where I stand by now I think.

It's good to see more and more people can obviously hear the grumbling wheels of the old bandwagon and choose not to jump on though, I must say. At least there are some people in here not afraid to possibly upset their more deluded friends by taking a rational look at the situation, and acknowledging there are an established group hellbent in their crusade to punish and kick out a fellow boarder for nothing more than speaking his mind.

As most of you would've realised (unless im killfiled), I dont tend to post as much on the boards as some, what with my addled brain not holding that many memories of comics past and present and not wanting to look like a total plank when I do comment (re; akira graphic novels)! However, I do spend my lunch time at work reading the boards, and now I have my pc at home working again, I spend my spare time here as well.

Im starting to lose the sense of why I came here in the first place, we seem to be getting back into the paranoia that surround a certain other boarder, and by no means is rc that bad. Ok, I dont agree with his personal attacks, but what if he were to apologise? promise not to do it again? You've picked up the wrong end of the stick regarding personal attacks, Darryl; it's the other way around - read the posts properly.

Or show me where I have attacked someone personally - explain your accusations, that's what I am calling for. Otherwise if boarders keep sticking their noses in with such groundless remarks I am apt to sling them straight back with contempt.

I think heated arguments on message boards look bad to people skimming through, whatever the rights or wrongs of the argument.  As do all the posts like mine here which keep the threads going, even with the best intentions.  Probably the sooner they end the better, but as we all know that's not easy if you feel you've been maligned, misinterpreted or just insulted.

Party for the problem here is that there is a fear by many boarders that we have a ***** 2 situation here, though like Darryl I don't think it's that bad.  It seems implausible that one person can wreck a whole message board, and it may seem like an over-reaction, but it's happened before.

I would say though, that I don't have any problem with the way people think or behave in general here.  True, they don't all think the way I do and don't have the same opinions as me, but I don't see any reason to be worried by that.  I also don't think it's worth screeching Hive Mind as soon as twelve people manage to agree on something.  Agreements happens so rarely anyway.

Finally for any new people, all you really have to do is turn up and join in.  It helps if you get an icon so you are easier to recognise and don't immediately antagonise people (at least until you know them!), because as I've explained, from past very bad experiences, people's internet immune system kicks in at the first sign of a potential troll, whether that's fair or not.

The chat room is frequently off topic, so don't be too surprised that not everyone's talking about Dredd's odour-eaters, and the board has a mix of on and off topic discussions.  Post, join in, there are only a handfull of people with encyclopaedic knowledge of 2000AD, and almost everyone is happy to answer questions.

The personal attacks comment comes from the long post you made about geeks and castles - Ok, you dont name names, but people can read (rightly or wrongly) into things, and think that you mean them. It doesnt make it right, but it happens.  How about we all lighten up, remember we're here to have a laugh and socialise (in a somewhat restricted wya) with people of a like mind, and get away form the mud slinging and name calling that seems to be sneaking back in?

I am not an alien working in Singapore falling foul of your rules of conduct. But since we are comparing to this here, if I WAS in such a situation - and, going by your strange understanding of "bad behaviour" - I would be forced to go over your head, and it would be interesting to see what your superiors thought of your reasons for terminating the employment of those under your control...

Not sure where that's come from, unless it's been misintepreted from what I said.  Not getting an icon is not antagonising , it just makes you easier to recognise.  Not a problem RC suffers from by the way.

its a place to retreat to in times of utter madness.to get away from the very things you brought to this board.my view is this. your behavoir in earlier posts was typical of a person who bucks the system and tell others its there way or no way.

hence my explanation of why i did hit kilfile and why i for the first time since i began posting here i actaully felt insulted by another boarders point of view.

you will in time come to realise this is what many of bring to this board. the socail side of ourselves. not the alter ego found at work,

I remember being very intruiged by this strange anthology, and started collecting not long after.

Like most people, I stopped reading "comics" when going out and getting pissed was the everyday norm, and re-discovered 2000AD again later.
