just watching these again, these were great when i was a kid - what was yor favourite?
mine - animal and beaker
kermit was cool too, of course
Animal.
animal
crazy harry
or should the title be 'who is your favourite muppet'
crazy harry
could u remind me who that was again please??
(sorry i forgot but i think hes one of the band)
runner up satus must surly go to the swedish chef
mee mee mee
me mee me mee meee
At the time I think it was beaker.
These days I can relate more to Gonzo. Though I'm not into poultry.
And yet you look like Beaker's boss, Paul...
;)
Step into the electroplasma cage Johnny...
I bet Devon's Daddy watched too much chef.
According to my mum, i was always a fan of Sweetums!
crazy harry was the nut with the detonator who popped up unexpectedly to blow up part of the set.
"did somebody say bang?"
Link: get you muppet here
Bloody hell- I'd forgotten all about him!
Bet they don't use him anymore...
;)
Gonzo.
Though I like Pepe the Prawn.
I bet Devon's Daddy watched too much chef.
bloody scary how real that show was. first and second seasons.
but my fave muppet was the chef.i had decided early on to go that way.he was always so damn funny.
Bunsen and Beaker being a somewhat spoddy kid... now I've actually got a liking for Kermit (trying to organise chaos) and Waldorf and Statler...
Statler: Ah, there's nothing like grand opera.
Waldorf: And that was nothing like it.
Class
When I was a DJ a uni I used finish every gig with the Muppet Theme...
mine would be Animal and Dr. Teeth.
Will
Bert from Sesame St
Ernie!
simply because I cant do a great 'gee burt!' impression.
apart from him, its rizzo the rat (light the torch not the rat!)
Animal, Beaker and the random penguins!
Got to be Gonzo.
And from Sesame Street, the truly brilliant Grover.
Just like The Great Gonzo I have a soft spot for the chickens.
La Placa Rifa,
W. R. Logan.
Dr Teeth was like, totally the wickedest cat, man.
But Gonzo was the true protagonist.
Heard an interesting fact about the muppets, that they couldn't get funding in the states, so they started it off with a Uk audience.
Most odd.
All of the above, plus the cool girl bass player from the band, did she have a name?
Dude, don't talk about the woman I love like that.
er... I mean...
"the truly brilliant Grover"
I forgot about him!!
The hapless round-headed blue guy that grover always waited on in the restaurant in Sesame Street. The perfect straight man to grover's antics. I think the programme makers called him "Blue Guy".
Personally I prefered Sesame Street, the comedy was so simple and didn't rely on so many old jokes.
ADE
herdy gerdy put the fishy in de hoop!!
Go Sweedish chef
Brrr. The Chef always freaked me out - something to do with those human hands.
My fave: Rowlf - criminally underused since the sad death of Henson.
"since the sad death of Henson."
And now we see the sad spectacle of muppets advertising McDonalds and Credit cards, something Jim Henson would never have allowed.
I bet you can't guess who my favourite muppet is............
Just for Wooley it's Sweetums...also Robin. The biggest and smallest muppets just about.
Gonzo The Great.
"What about me? I just did a hundred foot belly-flop onto the hood of a moving car?"
Beaker and Manah Manah.
Fozzie Bear has *always* annoyed me.
The problem as I see it was two-fold:
1. The odd reaction to Dark Crystal pretty much killed the company financially, meaning they had to rely on more merchandising. A shame, because Dark Crystal is a really good film.
2. Once Henson had gone, no-one wanted to take over "his" muppets. The problem was that Henson did many of the most popular ones; therefore, subsequent muppet stuff became very lop-sided; Lord only knows what will happen to the muppets when Frank Oz calls it a day.
gordon rennie
hmm thats a future post maybe (when i get time)
i too really enjoyed dark crystal and labyrinth, some of the all time greats
Ah Sesame Street, I wonder if Mr Hooper (was that the shop owners name?) would be allowed to hang around with all those kids without suspicion these days!
Fave muppet? hmm can't be sure, that drummer Animal? was funny, I guess my ignorance regarding Muppetism disqualifies me from entering a valid vote in this survey of all things puppetary.
Ed
Without a doubt Grover is the single best muppet to grace television.
Fozzy Bear just reminds me of Yoda (or Yoda reminds me of Fozzy Bear... whatever).
Dialog from the heart-wrenching "Mr. Hooper is Dead" Episode written after actor Will Lee died
Big Bird gives pictures that he drew of everyone.
Big Bird: And last but not least, ta-da!
[Shows picture of Mr. Hooper.] Well, I can't wait till he sees it!
[silence]
Say, where is he? I wanna give it to him. I know! He's in the store.
Bob: Uh, Big Bird. He's ... he's not in there.
Big Bird: Oh. Then where is he?
Maria: Big Bird, uh, don't you remember we told you? Mr. Hooper died. He ... he's dead.
Big Bird: Oh yeah. I remember. Well, I'll give it to him when he comes back.
Susan: Big Bird, Mr Hooper's not coming back.
Big Bird: Why not?
Susan: Big Bird, when ... when people die, they don't *come* back.
Big Bird: Ever?
Susan: No, never.
Big Bird: Well, why not?
Luis: Well, Bird Bird, they're dead. They ... they can't come back.
Big Bird: Well, he's *gonna* come back. Why, who's gonna take care of the store? And who's gonna make my birdseed milkshakes and ... and tell me stories?
David: Big Bird, I'm gonna take care of the store. Mr. Hooper, he left it to me. And I'll make you your milkshakes and ... and we'll all tell you stories, and we'll make sure you're okay.
Susan: We'll look after you.
Big Bird: Hmmm.
[Another awkward moment of silence.]
Big Bird: Well, it won't be the same.
Bob: You're right, Bird Bird. It's ... it's ... it'll never be the same without him.
Big Bird: Mmm.
Bob: [crying] But you know something? We can all be very happy that we had a chance to be with him and ... and to know him. And to love him a lot when he was here.
Big Bird: Yeah.
Olivia: And Bird Bird, we'll still have our *memories* of him.
Big Bird: Well, yeah ... yeah ... our memories. Right. Why, memories, that's how I drew this picture. From memory. And we can remember him and remember him and remember him, as much as we want to! But I don't like it. It makes me sad.
David: We all feel sad, Big Bird.
Big Bird: He's *never* coming back?
David: Never.
Olivia: No.
Big Bird: Well, I don't understand! You know, everything was just fine! I mean, why does it have to be this way? Give me one good reason!
Gordon: Big Bird, it has to be this way ... *because*.
Big Bird: Just because?
Gordon: Just because.
Big Bird: Oh.
[Looks at Mr. Hooper's picture.]
Big Bird: You know, I'm gonna miss you, Mr. Looper.
Maria : [crying] That's *Hooper,* Big Bird, *Hooper.*
Big Bird: You're right.
[Everyone gathers around Big Bird for a hug.]
woah, that brings back some memories,
i have just finished 'muppets in space' and am starting a double bill of 'muppet caper and muppet adventure'
great stuff
I read recently that Dark Crystal and Labyrinth are actually big money maker for the companies that lisence them. They did not produce the big dollers in the cinema but have since been very stable sellers on the video market.
A short while ago, as many of you may know, they gave a small amount of maney to Dave McKean to direct a movie for the Henderson group (which Neil gaimen wrote for free) to try and do the same again.
By the way, Animal, Beaker and the Chef.
Gonzo!
I appreciate his single-minded lunacy.
Also Beaker, the Swedish chef and Waldorf and Statler.
In the sales last month, I treated myself to a DVD collection The Best of the Muppet Show.
It includes, wonderfully, the episode where Mark Hamill guested.
I haven't watched that bit of it yet, but I'm very much looking forward to it.

Pepe!
'muppets take manhattan' not 'muppet adventure'
whats the name of the mckean movie or is it not made yet?
Damned if I can remember now! Its on very low budget, something about a girl who lives in a circus, but her life is not good. There may be a gateway to another world I think.
I think Mckean is directing it for nothing as well, just to get the chance at doing a movie. Its all part of the same deal, Gaiman offered to write it when he found out that it was for Mckean. I'm sure someone else here will remember the title.
You can definitely tell that with Dark Crystal, which has had a few releases on DVD already. I still don't understand why this got slated at the time, and why it did so badly. The environment in the movie is amazing (watch it one time and check out all the things going on in the background - that world is *alive*) and the plot is pretty good, as far as these things go.
i suspect if it had come out these days, it would have done much better - after all, many supposed "kids" things (particularly animation) are more aimed at adults than children, and most of the critics understand this.
Trouty your right:
Gonzo!
I appreciate his single-minded lunacy.
Also Beaker, the Swedish chef and Waldorf and Statler except you missed out the unfunny one: Ronald Regan
Huff
Zoot, Beaker and Lou Zealand. "Hey, Mister The Frog! Do you have room this week for me and my boomerang fish?!"
And Statler and Waldorf, of course. The episode where they heckle Milton Berle off the stage is side-splitting.
--Grant
Has nobody mentioned the pouting sex goddess herself yet.
No, not you Bou:
heh.
i remember the anamatronic bad guys from the dark crystal were pretty new & pretty damn scary at the time, didnt they appear on wogan or whatever chat show? maybe it was blue peter..
Brian Froud, involved in the design of this film, was one of my fave artists at the time, i had a hard time convincing tutors at art college that this was a valid subject matter for art history essays.. fuck em. froud worked on books with Alan Lee who if i've got my names right was one of the designers on LOTR. anyone know what happened to froud? i never heard anymore after the dark crystal.
i just tried to login to the board with 'waldorf' by accident
help? heh
Found the stuff I was on about - the Dave Mckean movie that is - on the IMDB. It's called MirrorMask and basically it says the following:
MirrorMask centers on Helena, a 15 year old girl in a family of circus entertainers, who often wishes she could run off and join real life. After a fight with her parents about her future plans, her mother falls quite ill and Helena is convinced that it is all her fault. On the eve of her mother's major surgery, she dreams that she is in a strange world with two opposing queens, bizarre creatures, and masked inhabitants. All is not well in this new world - the white queen has fallen ill and can only be restored by the MirrorMask, and it's up to Helena to find it. But as her adventures continue, she begins to wonder whether she's in a dream, or something far more sinister.
So there ya go.
Gamian was on with Jonathon Ross, and talked at length about it. The interview is probably still on the BBC website.
Dark Crystal. I loved the Landstriders. Cool and creepy at the same time.
This should work...
Heh. I like the Muppet of 'Angel'. The Muppet Show was great. So was Sesame Street in the days when Grover, not Telly was the 'viewer identification character'. Ernie and Bert were my favourite characters on that.
My favourite muppets were the ones that seemed imbued with human warmth. Gonzo was one, and Rolf the piano playing dog was another. On the other side of the coin, Waldorf and Stadtler made me laugh a lot.
I don't know the name of the female member of the Dr. Teeth band, but she played the part of Nurse Janice in Veterinarian's Hospital.
Oh dear, on the news today the muppets are going to Disney
i know i heard about that, disney have bought jim henson in an attempt to ward off another takeover bid
a new muppet show is in the works though :-)
