Watching some news programs this morning and it turns out that this not plot-lite cgi-heavy multiplex fodder... No it's a serious plea for environmentalism! A proper warning of what might happen! It's backed by Greenpeace and the Plant a Tree Federation!
Well I'm off to turn all the lights out, plant a tree and burn George Bush
Or,an alternative explanation is that it's bollocks...

I did read somewhere that the book this is based on(Superstorm or something like that)has all these scientific facts and figures backing up its theories then the author blows all his credibility by bringing up Zodiac signs and astrological portents. Still I'm actually looking forward to seeing this as no-one destroys the world like Emerich.

You know theres almost certainly some interviuew with an actor soemwhere where it turns out the single most important thing about the film is their characters quest to be reunited with their lost son.
So long as it is like the first hour of Independence Day (where everyone gets killed) and not the second (where everyone gets saved by Uncle Sam) then I suspect I'll like it.
You can all scoff...this film is going to be the only summer blockbuster that actually ROCKS!
SPIDERMAN 2 will not rock?
but on topic. it was said this movie was a bit president bush beating and as such at first NASA where not allowed to answer questions raised by the premise of the movie.
this has since been denied and nasa boffins happy to answer.
Certainly whilst studying Ice Age theory at university (did geology) the theory that this was based on was a major strand.
The trouble with Ice Ages is that there are all sort of factors, from solar cycles, to CO2 levels, etc thtat all interact to affect global temperature - ice ages are thought to happen when a couple of these are going in different directions.
Trouble is that we (man) is a bit too fast for these cycles to cope with...

Ah, well, DD, I personally thought Spiderman I sucked like an illegal Estonian immigrant with a wife and sixteen children to support.
Just my personal opinion, mind you.
I don't know about global warming or an impending ice age, all I know is that oil is a finite resource, and we shouldn't all be in the greatest hurry to use up every last drop of it...
For a really neat Weather_gone_wromg SF story try Bruce Sterlings Heavy Weather... sort of like Twister times a thousand.

And to think I sent you free stuff!
Seriously though, Spidey 2 will be great, just as the first one was.
This will be entertaining, but their 'IT COULD HAPPEN ANY SECOND!!!' attittude ruins it, because it is - to be frank - complete horseshit.
Yeah but look! Big waves destroying New York and stuff!
world destroyed by heavy weather. HELL, YEAH!!
