Title: 2000ad Top Trumps are GO!!!!
Post by: ukdane on 18 May, 2004, 03:35:33 AM
Well, after plenty of talking about it,
Watcher and myself have finally put together an online version of 2000ad Top Trumps, and it's on the site! (see link below)

There are 48 cards (with more to come in a future version) in this version you play against Tharg (as with the Supernova game) but a future version for multiplayer games is in the pipeline.

You can register your score (if you are good enough) just like in the Supernova game.... and (for DXB's info) I've removed the cheat! I've also removed the cheat from the Supernova game (DXB scored a perfect 0- but cheated in doing so!), and reset the score table, so both games are up for grabs!

If you have any ideas for extra cards, or comments about the current cards, let us know here please.

(We are aware that it is difficult to see the difference between 7 and 1!)

The next version of this game will hopefully also include the Prog number as an option- (where the lowest number is the better card).

Both this Top Trumps game and the Supernova game require the latest Flash plugins.

Enjoy!

Good fun, that. Is it me or does the game get stuck in a loop where Tharg keeps re-dealing his final card?

This might be a bug- I've just noticed something similar if the second to last card gets pooled... I'm investigating, and will correct any bug as I find it.

Oh, and before I forget, thanks to Leigh Shepherd for his sterling work on the cards and stats for the game. (We got there at last Leigh! :-) )

I have fixed the Halo Jones card bug, and I believe I've fixed the last card bug.

I've also changed the AI a little, so that Tharg is a little less forgiving if he has a good card, and doesn't make any silly decisions with a bad card.

Yeah, how'd you manage that then?

Lucky so & so!

What do people think about the high-score table being zeroed once every so often, so that new players can have a go at being Nr.1? (at the moment the ranking is alphabetical so if Albert scores 0 10 times, when John scores 0 it'll never appear). There are three alternatives.

1) Make the highscore table recall ALL scores, not just the top 10.

2) Change the method of scoring- by some means.

3) Change the way the score is remembered, ranking more recent high scores before older ones.

How about changing the scores to include a time element?  So final score = your number of cards x seconds taken?

BTW - I played only one game to reach my position, thus proving once and for all - I ROCK.

1) Make the highscore table recall ALL scores, not just the top 10.

And no. of times played if possible.

And change the sevens so they look less like ones.

Please.

how about giving tharg high scores based on eras of the prog.

ie. in the 90s he gets a really low score in the 70-80s very high. and then in the diggle/rebellion era and beyond the highest score of all.

Can't work this game at all.

The first card is always Judge Dredd, and whichever category I nominate, I lose. Game over.

Top Tip: Even if it's slightly weaker than another category, use "Support" if it's a score of 5 or over.  With so many lone-wolf 2000ad characters out there, it has a good chance of winning.

Very good.

But Tharg can be a bit daft! He seems to go for combat as his figure of choice, evenm when other scores are higher (eg. he played SKizz, with 8 intelligence and 2 combat, and picked combat!)

As an aside, do MACH 1 and the Traitor Generall really only have 4 support? Don't they have the backing of their governments?

that said...

REALLY GOOD FUN!

My reckoning was the traitor General was on the run from the Norts and Southers for most of his time, being a free agent when we see him.

MACH 1 was almost exclusively sent on one man missions, and his boss was trying to kill him for much of the time!

At the moment Thargs "brain" works in mysterious ways!

Oh, and I'm still after other ways for improving the game scoring.

How about giving the player a choice of 5 levels and the final score is something like (number of cards taken by Tharg + 1) x (6 - level)

Therefore you could get a score of 4 from (3+1)x(6- level 5) or (1+1)x(6- level 4) or (0+1)x(6- level 2)

The best possible score would be 1 = winning with no losses at level 5. Someone playing at the easiest level (1) couldn't get a better score than 5.

Title: Re: 2000ad Top Trumps are GO!!!!.....

How about giving the player a choice of 5 levels and the final score is something like (number of cards taken by Tharg + 1) x (6 - level)

I thought about putting in difficulty levels, but decided against it for a few reasons.

1) There's only so many ways that Tharg can get harder to beat. Basically, if you have a good run, you can beat him. What is adjustable is how forgiving he is if you DO make a mistake. In version 2.5 he won't let mistakes go unpunished!
(Version 2.5 also includes the ability to choose "FIRST PROG" as a category).

2) Programming difficulty levels into a program that is this close to completion requires way too much reprogramming, and I'd rather use the time getting a multiplayer version set up.

The best way I can think of making this game harder, is by including more cards.
What I'm still unsure of is whether the category scores for these cards should be broader, (ie very high and very low on the same card) or more ambiguous with the cards already in the deck (to hinder "killer cards").

I thought combining the current score and a time score would be an alternative, BUT I'm still nore sure, as the game automatically includes some pauses (in order to show cards) so people with fast PC's might always do better than people with slower old PC's.

Version 2.5 will be online shortly, which might mean a zeroing of the highscore table again!

Title: Re: 2000ad Top Trumps are GO!!!!.....
Post by: ukdane on 20 May, 2004, 05:43:37 AM
I've just thought of another scoring method- to stop people from always choosing the highest value.

1) Score the game as it currently is.
2) give each card (or category) a penalty depending on how "powerful" it is.
3) add this "handicap" to the final score.

(This would make the game harder too, as getting onto the leaderboard would be much harder)

For the benefit of those not able to play the game for some reason.

1) Are you using a PC or a MAC? I have only tested the game on a PC, so I have no idea if it is possible to run it on a MAC.

2) You need to make sure that the Flash player installed on your PC is THE LATEST version (IIRC v6). If it's not the latest version you'll get the error that ODDBOY is getting. (Odders, this means you'll need to update).

The game (due to one single but necessary piece of coding) is NO LONGER backwards compatable so it will NOT work on version 5 Flash Readers.

If you are still having problems, it might be becuase of your browser settings, or because your PC is too slow.

Sorry, to all those having problems. I hope you are able to resolve them in some way. Feel free to email me if you are still having problems with the RUNNING of the game. Please provide as many details as possible about your PC specs when emailing.

Lots of fun!

There's just the right amount of uncertainty about whether you'll win an exchange even after learning the statisticly best attributes to play  with each card.

I wish there was a button to quickly move the game on to the next hand as it takes far too long once the mechanics and cards are learnt. This would be especially welcome if even more cards are to be introduced.
Title: Re: 2000ad Top Trumps are GO!!!!.....
Post by: Dudley on 24 May, 2004, 03:33:39 PM
How about something like your score per card is determined according to how you won it?  Ie if you just played your strongest attribute (eg "Strength: 10" or "Prog: 1") then you only get 1 point, if you played your weakest then you get 10 points?

Does this make sense?
Title: Re: 2000ad Top Trumps are GO!!!!.....
Post by: ukdane on 25 May, 2004, 12:38:42 AM
Makes a lot of sense, and sounds similar to the "bonus" score idea I was talking about above.

I think I'll look into a way of making this work!
Title: Re: 2000ad Top Trumps are GO!!!!.....
Post by: Leigh S on 25 May, 2004, 01:26:46 AM
Of course, your highest score is not always the best one to play - as mentioned before, a support score of 6 or 7 is a tough one to beat, but forcombat its relatively weak... needless to say, I'm working on assessing the best and worst choices for each card as we speak....
Title: Re: 2000ad Top Trumps are GO!!!!.....
Post by: Thread Zero on 25 May, 2004, 01:42:30 AM
Of course, what the game really needs is a 'Bottom Trump' - the card in every deck that you groan every time it appears because it's so awful (ie - the Mad Axeman in the Horror deck).

You need to add in that woman with the perm from 'Zippy Couriers' or those two gits from 'Chronos Carnival', I reckon.  At the moment, Halo Jones is the groaner...

Thanks Trout.

Yup, at the moment, to get on the high score table, you need to beat Tharg without loosing any cards.

HOWEVER, I'm currently reworking the scoring, to come up with something a little more competitive, which takes into account the values of the category that you use to win a card. (Incentive Risk Taking!)

Yet another version will be available in the (very) near future!
Title: Re: 2000ad Top Trumps are GO!!!!.....
Post by: ukdane on 27 May, 2004, 07:29:56 AM
Due to testing of the new version, the game might not be working 100% correctly at the moment. Specifically there may be a problem with the recording of high scores.

I'll post back here when the game is running at full capacity again.
Title: Re: 2000ad Top Trumps are GO!!!!.....
Post by: ukdane on 27 May, 2004, 07:54:12 AM
Apart from the fact that I need to amend the rules, to explain the new scoring procedure, the game appears to work.

There are 12 NEW cards, as well as the new scoring- which has made the game a whole lot harder.

The highest score isn't the lowest number anymore, but the highest. Finishing without Tharg taking any of your cards, doesn't necessarily mean you'll be top of the leaderboard... especially if you only use high valued categories to get there.

I'll update the rules in the game to explain the scoring later.

And now, inevitably, someone asks: how do we get a real, physical version of these cards?

I hate people who suggest things that create work for other people, but I'll do it anyway. :-)

How about a card version (hopefully with Tharg's permission) that could be sold for charity?

I've emailed Dominic Preston about this (via Jamie Boardman)... I hope to hear something back soon :-)

My idea was to have a deck of the cards as a  free gift for subscribers, and then give away booster packs with the end of year specials (Prog 2004 and Meg Special etc) which contained new characters, allowing subscribers to boost their decks, and (after a period of time) for non-subscribers to obtain a smaller set- of course the main deck should be made available to buy from Thargs Online shop too.

I hope they do decide to do something like this.

Seconded.

That is a really good idea, as eventually decks would be customised to a players favourites, allowing for squaxx to actually play against each other, a la pokemon etc...
