Title: Comics Exhibition
Post by: Byron Virgo on 19 May, 2004, 01:45:02 AM
I've been asked to organise a display of comics and 'graphic novels' over the last couple of months. It should begin around the middle of next week. I've already had some stuff sent to be from Garen Ewing, of Rainbow Orchid fame (and we should be selling some of his books as well) and Chris Staros of Top Shelf, and we should be getting more stuff (hopdfully) from 2000AD, AP Comics, and Dark Horse, amongst others.
I've also managed to collect all the books in the borough that hadn't been stolen or weren't rubbish. We should also be having some examples of 'from script to page, through lyouts, pencils, inks and finally colurs' (thanks again goes to Garen). We should also hopefully have some guest speakers, something I'm currently orgainising (if anyone's interested, you know who to contact), and should have some free comics to give away to people. We've also got the bookshop next door involved, and they'll have a display up in their window.

If you're in the area, curious, or just suffer from mental problems, please call down on us at:

West Hampstead Library
Dennington Park Road
London
NW6 1AU

Tel: 020-7974 6610
Fax: 020-7974 6539
Email: westhampsteadlibrary@camden.gov.uk

It should be up for the rest of the summer, so please feel free to call by. We'd be glad to see you.

(Many thanks to Gavin Hanly of 2000adreview.co.uk for putting this image online, and apologies to Rebellion if it breeches some kind of copyright law - please don't sue me, I'm strictly non-profit!)

That's great Byron!
It's well out of my way, but good luck with it!

Serious congratulations Virgo.

I'm sure you deserve a Krill Tro for this, especially if Rebellion get you some freebies in time. A valuable marketing opportunity.

I just hope that some people come in to see it.

But I have been very lucky with the response I've had back from people. They really have bent over backwards to help, which is incredibly encouraging (I've just had an email back from the head of Marketing over at Dark Horse who's been really helpful, and is air mailing me some stuff)

All things being well, I shuld be going down to St. Albans on Friday to pick up a load of boxes from Rich at AP Comics (home to Miranda & De La Cruz' The Chase, coming in July); Mark, the Head of Marketing at Dark Horse, said he'd priority airmail me some stuff yesterday; Garry Spencer Millidge (Strangehaven) is sending me some stuff; and Dominic, the lovely Rebellion marketing bod, has said he'll try and sort out something as well.

I would like to give you guys a few more details, but I just had my wallet stolen, so I'm a little up in the air at the moment, and not a little bit pissed. Although a better phrase might be seething with indescribable violent rage. I'd like to say that, but I actually feel preternaturally calm, but more than a little depressed.
Ah, bollocks!

Anyway, come to the exhibition!

I expect to see all you guys there (well, not all obviously, but certainly some) or else I'll be really offended!

So, come on down, get some free comics (looks like I'mgoing to have quite a lot to give away) and meet the Curator of the National Comics Archive (probably).

Nice one, Byron! I'm delighted that you managed to hook up with Garen Ewing and Garry Spencer Millidge - they're both doing great things, and their work is perfect for giving your patrons a taste of what the small-press is capable of.

Best of luck, and congratulations on pulling this together - and remember to take *lots* of photos for all the poor buggers stuck at the other end of the country :-)

I am trying to sort out getting hold of a digital camera (when I get my new bank cards sent to me!), as so many companies and creators have asked for photos from the event, so if I get round to it I shall certainly try and post them up here.

However, don't think that this means that those of you within, ooh at least a fourty mile radius, are excluded from coming. After all, if no-one comes, then I won't have anything to take any pictures of!

Okay, well it looks like everythings finally coming together.
I've already started to put up the exhibition, and am going in again tomorrow to finish it off.

The official opening will now be Tuesday 1st June 2004, after I get back from Bristol.

First off I'd like to thank: Sandra and John at Metaphrog; Michael Martens at Darkhorse; Garry Spence Millidge (Strangehaven); Garen Ewing (Rainbow Orchid); Richard Emms and all at APComics; and Colin Campbell, Dominic Preston and our very own Jamie Boardman from 2000AD, all of whom went above and beyond the call of dutym in providing a bountious amount of promotional materials, and really helping the exhibition start with a bang. Dave Hitchcock (Whitechapel Freak) gets an honourable mention, as he failed to provide anything, but gave helpful words of encouragement.

So we'll be up and running soon. I've assembled about fourty-odd books from across London, ranging from Asterix and Tintin, through the newspaper strips of Canif and the graphic novels of Will Eisner, to works of the modern day like Mike Mignola's Hellboy or Alan Moore's League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Don't worry if you're not a member, all you need to join is one proof of address (a bill, bank statement or drving liscence, for example), and you don't have to live in London. You can take the books back to any of out libraries across London, or alternatively just read them in the library.
We have half a tonne of comics to give away entirely FREE, thanks to 2000AD, AP and Dark Horse.
We also have a display featuring the process of getting a page from script, through layouts, pencils, inks, lettering and colours (thanks again to Garen Ewing for these).
There are loads of flyers, badges, bookmarks, fridge magnets, key rings, and other assorted goodies to be given away for FREE.
We also hope to include an interactive CD Rom element for people too play around with, thanks to Metaphrog.
We should also be featuring a talk by Garen Ewing about his work in comics, particularly on his Rainbow Orchid/Julius Cahncer books, and we will be selling copies on site as well.
We also plan to host a comprtition to design your own comic, for all levels of ability and age groups. The winners will recieve a whole host of prizes, including hardback graphic novels, computer games, posable figures, statues, tote bags, posters and even Dark Horse own brand coffee!
(We are looking for judges for this, so anyone whose had some experience in comics, no matter how limited, please let me know)

So, there you have it. Why not come on down, and blag yourself some free stuff? Nip in and say hello, you'll recieve a warm welcome. And if nobody bothers to come, my bosses are going to have me 'put down' in he most inhumane way they can possibly think of.

Remember: it's all FREE!!!

Forgot to mention that I gave my first, and probably last interview on Thursday, and have just had a photographer round to shoot some pictures of me to acompany the story. Aparently my facial expressions were "static". Ah well.

Anyway, the exhibition's up and running now, so come on down from Tuesday onwards and take a look.

Well, the exhibitions up, and everythings done (hard as it is to admit that its finished), apart from an interactive element I might be adding (thanks to Metaphrog and Bryan Talbot for that).

Anyone been down for a look yet?

All things being well (and relying on people being interested in it, which they have been so far) it should be up till August/September. Anyone who comes down is welcome to take a big fat bagload of comics with them, although the 2000AD's are being eaten up pretty quickly. You can also, if you fancy, have a bash at our comics competition, as we've got a load of goodies on display that you could win. Just let me know when people are coming down and I'll make sure I'm here.

Okay, here's the deal people.

I don't know how many (if anyone) from this messageboard has managed to take a peek at the old expo, but I need some people to lend me a hand.

I need to take some photos of the exhibition for the contributors and future exhibitors, but I want to have a few people in shot. It's been pretty successful (we must have moved more than a hundred graphic novels and given away hundreds of individual comics - 2000AD has proved to be extremely popular). However, I want a few people in shot, both to make it look busy for other people, but also to give a sense of scale to the people who are going to host the exhibit when it begins it's tour of London.

Therefore, I'm sending out the call to anyone in the London area: If you fancy it, please drop me a line and we'll arrange a date you can come down and I'll photograph you. You need to live in the London area, and need to be prepared to do it relatively soon, as I want to capture the display while it's still in it's prime. Anyway, if you're interested, leave a message on this thread or drop me an email. I will reward you with a load of free comics, and will try to pay any travel expenses (although as I haven't even got back the hundred or more that I've spent on this so far, I'll probably have to pay you out of my own pocket).

Also, if anyone's bee, or is planning to, could you post up some criticim here? I am interested in people's opinions, and would value having some feedback, both about what we've got right and how we can improve (I'm hoping in the move that I'll be able to include the interatctive elements provided by Metaphrog and Bryan Talbot). Anyway, if people can let me know, I'll be very grateful.

Sorry about leaving it so long, but I've been really busy and not had the chance to check the website.

Sunday would be fine with me (if other things have not already intervened - if not, don't worry). Let me know if you are going to come or not, and if so what time. If not, we'll try and arrange another time.

I can`t be there, but it looks great. Hope it goes well. I always liked it when my uni library organised stuff like this.

Should be tomorrow afternoon (it'll have to be before four, as that's when the library closes). Anyone who's interested can drop me aline, and I'll give you my mobile number so that a proper time can be arranged.

Looks like we'll be moving even quicker than I thought, however, so we may be off on our tour soon. Should be in Camden Town probably next (failing that it'll be Swiss Cottage or Kings Cross St. Pancras). I'll post more details when I know them.

Let me know how much (not that it matters really - we'll be directly opposite a bank anyway)
