Film & TV / The new Number 6...
04 May, 2006, 07:55:23 PM
Is apparently going to be Christohper Ecclestone.

A) I didn't know they were remaking The Prisoner
B) I hope he stays for more than one series (although that's all the first was)
C) Why are they remaking the Prisoner?

Help! / The 86ers
21 March, 2006, 03:13:08 PM
This thrill has got off to an interesting start, but can anyone furnish me with the background to Rafe and Gabe?

At first I thought Gabe was amother version of Synnamon's globe/Dante's crest but then realised that Gabe might be another Biochip (which would explain his sass).

Anyone care to enlighten me?

General / Antique?
14 March, 2006, 05:52:22 PM
I'm currently in the process of moving to Chiswick (well near enough) and happened to come across this antique furinture place on Chiswick High Road.

Couldn't nearly afford any of the furniture but it was fun to look around it's three floors.

On the way out something caught my eye that I'm surprised I didn't see on the way in. Three copies of tooth for sale at ?2 a pop. One was definitely this one below.

Is 2000AD now classified as an antique?

General / Dilemma time
21 February, 2006, 12:48:47 AM
I became a subscriber (again) just less than two years ago and I have thoroughly enjoyed myself during this time.

However what I have been discovering is that, unlike my previous stints as a regular reader, I've no longer the time to go back and re-read through my old progs. In fact it seems that now I prefer my stories collected.

At the moment the Meg seems to be a 15 minute read, and that's not a lot of bang for your buck. It wouldn't be as bad if I were to go back and re-read them but, as stated, I don't have the time to get the full value out of them.

Tooth is slightly better because of the frequency, but the hit:miss ratio is borderline. For example this week's prog has an excellent Dredd and Ten Seconders, while ABC Warriors and Harry Kipling were okay distractions and Synnamon was absolute rot. Again. And this is a better ratio than in recent months.

But it is the necessary disjointed nature of the story telling that means the prog is not having the impact it once was.

What I'm contemplating, considering the regularity with which Rebellion are finally making the most out of the back catalogue with the TBPs, is to stop my subscription and by two collections a month. This way I get the best of the publications, albeit a few years behind the regular readers, but as one continuous story. I would also keep my sub to the Extreme Editions for the same reasons.

Am I just particularly jaded at the moment, or have other boarders thought about this route?

Prog / Prog 1473 - Oi, twat.
30 January, 2006, 04:17:21 PM
The cover is not bad. It's the story inside that I can't make head nor tail of.

Will someone please explain what is happening in the first three pages?

As for Cabs - bet no-one was expecting that!

Prog / Extreme Edition 14
23 January, 2006, 04:30:55 PM
Just came through the post and it is a new character for me..

Bad City Blue anyone?
Fronm the cover it looks like Meltdown Man, but I guess that's because Cliff Robinson has gone to town on it again.

The two fillers I have read before though - Silo which I thought was a very creepy story at the time and Tribal Memories, another unusual Tooth story.

Some interesting choices here. Going to look forward to reading it.

Suggestions / Graphic Novel Subs
15 January, 2006, 04:52:13 PM
Not sure about anyone else, but I intend to get the all the planned Case Files for the foreseeable future. There are also other lines that I intend to collect in their entirity (Dante for example).

With this in mind, wouldn't it be a good plan for Rebellion to do a subs system for the trades. That way Rebellion will know they've got X amount of guaranteed income for its trade lines and allow it to plan ahead with some confidence and, in return, the subs can get a discount (15% to make it more worthwhile than the online shops) and they get the collections as near as dammit they come out, saving fruitless trips to Forbidden Planets around the country.

Subs could be asked what lines they want to subscribe to -
Dredd Case Files
Dredd Recent Collections
Sinister Dexter
Dante
Rogue Trooper
Cabs
Slaine
ABC Warriors
Robo Hunter
Sub ?10 one-offs
Sub ?15 one offs

I'd probably sign up for both Dredds S/D, Dante, ABC Warriors, Robo Hunter and the Sub ?10 one-offs, yet I might not buy all these seperately if you catch my drift.

Obviously it could end up being expensive, but if people are going to buy them anyway...

What does anyone else think?

General / The 2006 great Zarjaz quest
04 January, 2006, 08:01:35 PM
A while ago (18 months) we were looking to get Zarjaz introduced to the Oxford English Dictionary after it was surprisingly usd in Edge magazine.

I think this is the year to do it. I personally have used it twice now in two different publications.

Duds found a reference where we needed five unique usages within the space of five years.

So we have three (lets not count the Tooth usage, although I'm sure it will work - similarly the exhibition will probably not count). We need more. Let's make a really convincing argument for Zarjaz.

I emplore everyone to start writing into their local newspapers, their favoured 'other' magazines or even in offcial communication with government departments and use the word Zarjaz.

Even if you, yourself are going to get something published, throw a zarjaz in somewhere insignificant (such as a caption) and it will still count.

Let's post the evidence here when it arrives.

General / Biochips
21 December, 2005, 08:16:40 PM
Until the recent Winter Special (and more specifically Richard Elson's art) I always thought that the Biochips were marked by letters.

I - Helm
Z - Gunnar
Backards E - Bagman

I've now discovered these were in fact 'blocky' versions of 1, 2 and 3.

I'm unfathomably disappointed in this revealation. I can't see why it matters so much but it does.

Anyone else think something was one way, only to discover, years later, that it is not the case?

Prog / Prog 2006 - In thrills we trust
12 December, 2005, 07:51:43 PM
Thought I'd start a review thread.

I couldn't help it. I should have read it bit by bit, but I didn't. I'm a binge reader.

Cover
I like it. Soneone else has critcised it for being too muted, but I think it is much better than last year's cartoony effort. Johnny looks a bit weird though.

Judge Dredd - Class of '79
What another of Dredd's classmates goes bad? And he's the one that finds out again? Is that four or five that he's arrested from that class now? Might be a nice lead into this origins story that they are promoting.
Maybe they actually go bad because of the pressure of being in the same class as Dredd. Now it's more self-fulfilling prophecy. Still some interesting 'family' scenes although why can't we see Rico's metal jaw!

Caballistics - Strange bedfellows
An enjoyable character piece for Hannah Chapter and one or two nice character pieces for Ethan and Jenny.

Databyte - Button Man
Harry's coming back! Best news all year.

Nikolai Dante - Devil's deal
Almost a recap of where we are with Dante. No bad thing, although can't remember who this woman is. She comes across as real bad though.

Slaine - Carnival
Slaine's back. Meh. Interested in seeing how Kai's character has developed and Ukko is going to get such a kicking. Quite amusing episode, especially the warring shoggy beast family.

Sinister Dexter - Festive Spirits
It's very interesting what they've done with this. Wonder how it will be developed. Really enjoyed the story though and the general realisation of the characters about what has happened.

Low Life - He's making a list...
Don't really like Low Life as much as others seem to and while the storyline here isn't much kop there are some laugh out loud comments, usually made by Thora(?).

JD - Straight eye for the crooked guy
Frequently got lost on here because of the panel layout, but it's just a bit of knockabout fun. Don't think it would have stood up to being the only Dredd story in an issue though, but as a second bonus episode its alright.

The Ten Seconders
Now this looks good. Leaves the reader asking enough questions without getting lost. This already has the potential to be a cracker.

Strontium Dog - Shaggy Dog Story
Picks up from the last arc and again shows why the story is so popular. Particularly liked Shaggy's experience on the planet. Very funny and that last panel was unexpected but brilliant.

Film & TV / New Cyberman design
11 November, 2005, 12:27:02 AM
I've just come across the new design for the Cybermen and it's actually pretty darn cool.

Some people might think it generic robot design - but I think the scaling down of the helmet helps provide a lo-tech, distinctive menace.

Film & TV / He won't revive you know who, will he?
31 October, 2005, 05:20:14 PM
Stallone's bringing out another Rambo film, now he's finished another Rocky film.

You don't reckon he'll try for another Dredd, do you?

And if he does - will this be a good or a bad thing? Obviously the first one (and his acting) didn't get the best reviews, but a second bite of the cherry could rectify it. Maybe. Especially if Judge Death is around.

General / ABC Warriors - The Black Hole
28 October, 2005, 04:38:18 PM
Recently got this through the post and just finished it. My approach to this tome wasn't as fanatical as I thought it would be, as I had lent Meknificent Seven to my friends and they thought it was awful. I enjoyed it, but wondered if that was more to do with nostalgia than substance.

The long and shotr of it is - its hard work. Certainly the first two thirds of the story leaps around like no-ones business and its hard to keep tabs on what is happening and why, all nicely put off by Khaos theory.
I get the feeling that the Nemesis stroylines in which the ABCs were involved were much more interesting. Are these going to be re-released? What happened to Happy?

The final third is kick ass though and almost worth the slog through the start of the story.

It's well renowned for Bisley's work on it, but I thought the stripes by SMS were astounding. Anyone know why this was the only thing he did for tooth?

Plus... are there any plans for a Book 3?

Megazine / Meg 238 - Bastards... and a tooth crossover
17 October, 2005, 05:01:27 PM
Surprised to get the new Meg through the post this morning (once again in the same envelope as tooth - does anyone else get this) and the front cover looks real nice in the flesh (paper?).

Not read it yet, so don't know who the bastard is  but the rundown includes

Dredd - Blackout
Shimura - The Harder They Come
Anderson PSI - Lucid
Simping Detective - Petty Crimes
Charley's War

...and interestingly a second Dredd story involving Giant and Guthrie which is the second part of a bonus Dredd story in this week's tooth.

Another cross-promotion fellahs (and ladies). Time to buy both publications.

Books & Comics / Marvel slot machines
12 September, 2005, 05:15:23 PM
Picked up this press release. Would a Dredd casino game be something people would like to see?

CryptoLogic Inc., a leading software developer to the global Internet gaming market, announced that it will soon be rolling out new products based on an exclusive multi-year licensing agreement signed in late 2004, with Marvel Enterprises Inc., one of the world's most prominent character-based entertainment companies.  The new relationship, made through CryptoLogic's wholly-owned subsidiary, WagerLogic Limited, makes CryptoLogic the sole developer of Marvel-branded casino slot games on the Internet. You have seen them in the comics and on the big screen, and now CryptoLogic is bringing your favorite Marvel Super Heroes for high-impact action on the Internet - for the first time.

"CryptoLogic's new relationship with Marvel - home to some of the world's legendary entertainment brands - will strengthen our competitive edge through new, exciting Super Hero-themed Internet casino games," said Lewis Rose, CryptoLogic's President and CEO. "By delivering big-name action like the X-Men and The Hulk to the Internet, we're enhancing the entertainment factor of CryptoLogic games - and helping our customers appeal to an even wider player audience."

In today's competitive and increasingly sophisticated Internet casino market, players want more choice and more chances to win.  With Marvel, CryptoLogic is delivering great brands, great games and great entertainment.  Under the agreement, an initial six Marvel-themed, multi-currency jackpot video slot games are set for release this autumn.  Internet casino players will be able to experience big-screen excitement with their favorite Marvel characters - and win cash prizes in US dollars, Euros and Pounds Sterling.

Characters including The Hulk, Daredevil, The X-Men, Blade and The Punisher will swing into action in five new 9-line progressive jackpot video slot games. The new games offer multi-stage, interactive bonus levels with three separate jackpots available to be won - the first multi-level jackpot games ever to be offered on the Internet.  In addition, The Hulk will add his power to a new Hulk Fruit Machine - another in the series of British-style slot machines developed by CryptoLogic and favored by the strong UK player base of WagerLogic licensees.

As a pioneer and global leader in the estimated $12 billion online gaming industry, CryptoLogic continues to strengthen its position with a growing range of software products for the world's major Internet casino and poker markets. The company is also expanding its system capacity to accommodate rapid growth and player demand, and continues to work with many of the world's most trusted gaming brands.

Film & TV / Make a film
12 July, 2005, 03:26:34 AM
Someone has forwarded me a great link where people can make their own flash films on the net. The D.Film Moviemaker - its a great tool and good fun, if slightly limited.

If the more artistic and technical people were to submit some tooth characters, we could make our own Dredd film shorts without it being ruined by someone who can't even say 'I am the law'.

In the meantime, I reckon everyone should make a film and post it. Good directing people.
