I'm sure this has been covered when the books were initially released, but what do people think of the short novellas that Abaddon Books released over the past few years?

Over at Pop Culture Bandit, we've reviewed the Judge Dredd: Year One series, and have begun looking at the Judge Anderson: Rookie stories. Written by current 2000AD droids, these stories are simply spectacular and an inspired concept for a prose novel series. We'll post the latest reviews on this thread to keep you updated!

I have a soft spot for the age of full-motion video (FMV) in PC titles during the mid-nineties. Games like Black Dahlia, Phantasmagoria and 7th Guest were brilliant immersive experiences, blending cinema and videogames together. This latest title, Late Shift, from Ctrl Movie takes the idea further creating a genuine interactive movie with seven different endings that feels like a 'choose your own adventure' book. It's a really good storyline that is made even more enjoyable by the fact that you can alter events based on your choices.

I had great fun playing this with my girlfriend over the weekend, although both of us failed to get a happy ending for the main character - it's available for download on PS4, Xbox One, Steam and iTunes, and is well worth it as an alternative to the weekend movie rental!

General / 2000AD and Me: A Sci-Fi Love Story
22 March, 2017, 10:25:03 AM
I've written a blog post about my experiences with 2000AD - my first Prog, the various periods in my life where I drifted towards (and away) from the magazine and my current status-quo. I wanted to share it with you guys, and maybe start a conversation about your own "sci-fi love stories" with the magazine.

Hi guys,

We were very lucky to get the opportunity to speak with Ian Edginton about Brass Sun, ahead of the graphic novel's launch today, about the origins of the series, its development over the past three books and the future. It's a fascinating read, especially if you're a massive fan of this innovative and imaginative series! Please check it out and let me know what you think!

[warning: contains slight spoilers about Books 1 - 3, and minor teases about Book 4]

Courtesy of the lovely Molch-R droid and our Betelgeusian overlord, I have a copy of the upcoming Brass Sun: The Wheel of Worlds hardcover to give away.

All you need to do is create your own world akin to that of the Orrery. Just come up with a name like those seen in the book (Hind Leg, The Keep, Hot Air, etc) and give us some details on what it is like - be as imaginative as you like - include sketches, doodles, full blown art pieces, whatever.

The most imaginative entry chosen by our judges will win the hardcover, with the runner-up receiving the first two issues of the US floppy edition (covering the first book)

Hi guys,

I was lucky enough to score an interview with Rob Williams where I asked him questions about his involvement in the new Titan Comics Doctor Who series focused on the 11th Doctor, as well as a few sneaky questions about 2000AD.

Please check it out and leave a comment/tweet!

Also, here are the reviews for the first issues of the new 10th Doctor / 11th Doctor series. I strongly recommend the 11th Doctor series to fans of Al Ewing and Rob Williams, even if you're not much of a Whovian - it's surprisingly accessible and a great, fun read!

Links / Pop Culture Bandit Competitions
07 January, 2014, 10:45:07 PM
Hi all,

In an effort to regularly update my blog and make things more interactive, I've decided to hold monthly competitions with various graphic novels as the prizes. Occasionally, these will be 2000AD related, or sometimes other publishers. But, I thought it might be useful to have a thread on this board where I can promote that particular month's competition for you all, especially if it happens to be 2000AD related.

January's competition isn't 2000AD related...although, maybe tangentially...

This month, Pop Culture Bandit is giving away ONE copy of PUNISHER: BORN - the "origin" story of Marvel's The Punisher, written by Garth Ennis (there's that tangential link to 2000AD!) with art by Darick Robertson. Originally released as a four-part miniseries, this graphic novel collects the whole Mature Readers storyline in his gory glory...

Check out my blog for details on how to enter:

Thanks,
Jamie

This year was the year I begun actively reading and reviewing 2000AD, so to celebrate a near-complete year of reviews, I thought it would be neat to list the Top Ten Covers that had appeared - ironically, two of which appeared prior to my coverage of the comic, but thanks to 'Barney', I was able to see the awesome covers I had missed out on at the start of the year.

Please check out my Top Ten here > http://popculturebandit.blogspot.com/2013/12/top-ten-2000ad-covers-in-2013.html

And either comment on the blog, or in this thread with your thoughts and own versions of the list.

Happy New Year!

I was VERY lucky enough to get the chance to speak with Pat about the upcoming release of Slaine: The Book of Scars, and took the chance to ask him question about the origins of the character, how he has changed throughout the years and what the future might hold for him...

Please read and share:

If you have any feedback, feel free to start a conversation here. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the interview!

Hi all,

I was lucky enough to interview David Baillie, writer of numerous Future Shocks and most recently The Ghostship Mathematica, about his experiences writing for 2000AD, how he crafts his Future Shocks and what the future projects he has in the pipeline. It's a really interesting read, especially if, like me, you have aspirations of one day writing for 2000AD!

Hope you enjoy it!  :)

General / Interview with Rob Williams re: ORDINARY
16 September, 2013, 10:57:08 PM
Here's a quick interview I had with script droid, Rob Williams, regarding his upcoming thrill ORDINARY, as well as teasing an upcoming JUDGE DREDD storyline, and recounting an unfortunate encounter with Michael Chiklis from THE SHIELD.

Intrigued? Check out http://popculturebandit.blogspot.com/2013/09/interview-rob-williams-writer-2000ad.html for more details.

With the petition for a Dredd sequel still going strong, it got me thinking about what other 2000AD properties are ripe for adaptation for either film or TV.

Some of my choices might be a bit surprising, as might some of the ones which didn't make it...

General / Jim'll Paint It draws Judge Dredd in Oz
13 August, 2013, 09:35:07 PM
Jim'll Paint It runs a Facebook group and blog where he paints users requests using MS Paint - the beauty of his artwork is both the abstract absurdity of some of the suggestions he paints, and the fact it's done through the most basic of art software programs.

He recently did a submission based on a user's request:

Dear Jim,

Please paint me Judge Dredd's adventures in Oz, complete with Tin Man Ricky Gervais, Scarecrow Hugh Laurie and an actual lion, who it has been impossible to inform of the script and is thus savaging a munchkin.

Cheers,

Robert Wood

Other Reviews / The Complete Zenith
06 August, 2013, 10:24:10 AM
I was very lucky to receive a digital preview copy of the upcoming The Complete Zenith, and having never read the story before (blasphemy, I know!) I was excited to finally experience it and review the massive 480 page tome!

Anyone who has pre-ordered one of the special hardcover editions is in for a treat. It truly is a comprehensive collection, crammed with all the prologues, interludes and even the more recent appearances in Prog 2001 & the 'A Night to Remember' non-canon strip.

Prog / Prog 1617 - With Extreme Prejudice
03 January, 2009, 07:56:03 PM
Walked into my local WH Smiths today and was surprised to find two copies of the new Prog out on the shelf. Without pausing, I picked up the less creased copy and went to the till.

Reading it excitedly and half expecting to come online and see a thread already for it, I was surprised to see there wasn't. Am I the only person who has gotten their hands on the prog this early?

Anyway, Reviews:

Cover: I think this might be a homage to the Terminator. (Possibly a theatrical poster of the movie). Could be wrong though. It's not bad and it's unusual to have no borders around the title. It just kinda bleeds into the image. Not bad but nothing particularly striking.

Nerve Center - Looking forward to more Dante (I'm thinking this year might be the last), Cradlegrave looks intriguing from the previous image I saw (must be back in Prog 2008) and Zombo could be fun (Last promo'd in Prog 2009). Not sure if the promo for 'Necrophim' is Megazine or 2000ad, but it's good to see Tony Lee writing more stories after Stalag 666. This one looks like it has a more serious, less (prison) camp vibe to it...

Judge Dredd: Good start to a multi-parter. I'm not up on my Dredd history so I don't know if the
seemingly immortal
character is a recurring one or not, but they seemed to be a force that even Dredd might have trouble with. Also I'm curious as to the contents of the box and whether it will be linked to the parade. 5/5

Greysuit: Didn't read the first series of this so all the references to the past are lost on me. I get that he is some kind of bionic man, but the complexities of it don't make any sense to me. No idea why there was
people dressed up as the Mad Hatter and Nelson?
Also, was the character at the end meant to be some big relevation? Not quite sure about this one... 2/5

Maruader: Nice storytelling although I get the feeling that despite it being a new strip, there is some past reading I should catch up on with this one. Has this cadet been in any other Dredd stories before now? 4/5

Red Seas: Loved the character designs on the new creatures, especially
the guy with a face in his stomach.
Glad it looks like these creatures will be in the next part. They were excellent visuals! The story seems to be plodding at a decent pace and the fantasy setting contrasts well with the rest of the Prog. 3/5

Strontium Dog: Another great cliff-hanger and wisely the cliff-hangers aren't reliant on Johnny's Fate (since it is a flashback) but on characters we have no knowledge of the future with.
I'd be surprised if the girl does actually detonate her bomb, but there's always the chance she might...
Great plot, looking forward to the next episode. 5/5

Best of Prog: Strontium Dog.

The Downside to getting the Prog this early means that I have to wait longer for the next one! Darnit!

Off Topic / Ebay
18 February, 2004, 12:49:41 AM

Is it against any rules to post links to ebay auctions because my last few 2000 ad auctions have not sold and the visitor counter was low, so i thought of posting on this message board to get maximum exposure.
