I always thought in 'Crime and Punishment' he really looks like Pat Mills!

Yeah, that was deliberate, but Pat didn't think it was funny and asked that they stopped drawing Cal to look so much like him - hence that weird bit at the start of DtLD with Cal saying 'Now that I have my new haircut, I'm ready to rule Mega-City One...'

Wasn't  Day the Law Died created first, with the Crime and Punishment trilogy written to improve the continuity with Cursed Earth? In which case, McMahon's Caligula look would have preceded the Mills look-a-like.

Nice to have some of the Dredd-World strips collected - especially Armitage.

Agree about the title's needed on the spines, especially as I'm likely to pass on some of the more reprinted books so the spine image won't work anyway.

Can't honestly say I've thought about the endpapers😀

What's happening on the cover? Is she lying in a bath of blood? And if she's meant to be topless, where's her nipple?

America was published with a Judge Dredd title on its first run in the Megazine. Been left off at some point and I suspect it was misinterpreting this that led to its current classification of not being a Judge Dredd story.

His leg appears to have grown back.

I can confirm - same content, different covers.

The initial splash page of Hachette 1 is missing the text. Was this in the original progs? (Mine are boxed away upstairs, and Emmerdale is on).
Why do the Hachette volumes start by removing all the start of episode captions and logos and episode titles, but then later on start reprinting them?

The text was there in the prog, & first two GN editions. It was removed from the art for the previous reprint. There, it was printed on it's own on the page immediately before the initial splash.

Looks like whoever sent the files to Hachette didn't realise this had happened.

Parking, queuing... "We haven't got the 2000ad this year."

If you're planning on picking this up in Brighton, it's not there.

I love that Hicklenton went ahead and drew that page, presumably knowing it would be spotted and whited-out. Even more I love the feeble attempt to hide it behind the text box!

There's one page of Hicklenton's that has an editorial white blob in one corner. That's because he drew an ejaculating penis in that space originally.

General / Re: Repro question

Short answer is yes. Rebellion's recent work on Charley's War has demonstrated just how good reprints can be based on decades old material. The examples you cite come from the early days of Rebellion's GN output.

While original art and film may not be available, good quality reprints were carried out by Titan. There's no problem with the Treasury of British comics output from original comics either (and the Cursed Earth uncensored).

Volumes crying out for a new scan -

Slaine - Warrior's Dawn (the first GN)
ABC Warriors - The Black Hole
Flesh Book 1 (the existing GN features the heavily amended pages from the annual reprint)
A selection of the b&w Dredds, including Bolland's work, the Gibson episodes of Robot Wars, the Smith & Wilson Mega Rackets & the odd McMahon (Return of Rico).

Rebellion have silently replaced most of the Bolland Block Mania episode between first and subsequent printings. It can be done!

The frustrating thing is that so many of the classic b&w episodes were affected. The hopeful thought is that, because they are the 'classics', there's a slightly greater chance they will be revisited.

Imagine a Mek-Files style edition of Slaine... I'd even buy another copy of Horned God!

It is a very good repro. The new letter balloons cover more of the image although the lettering itself doesn't seem to be much larger. I can see it looks better for a new reader but it does feel odd when you're familiar with the original. The colour pages are in colour but I'm not convinced the coloured are original - there's something about it that feels like a recolourisation. If it is it's an authentic one though.

I'll be keeping my hardbacks but will buy a set of the reprints for my (Primary)school's library.

Thanks for the comics! If anyone is thinking of buying from Tjm86 I can thoroughly recommend him. Comics are as described, well looked after and fairly priced. Hand-delivered as well!

This is a wonderful read. Thanks to all for the effort.

I think my favourite feature is 'The Evolution of Judge Dredd'. Nice to see the images that link to the text. i hadn't seen the early Ezquerra line drawing on p 32 before.

I did notice on p 38 it says that the split-level structure of Judges/Police was quickly discarded. It actually took 4 years before the police made their final appearance. This was in the last panel of 'Anatomy of a Crime' in the 1982 Judge Dredd Annual (published in '81).
