Yep, I think it's called politics.

It is a good essay, though, isn't it?  i found it through cracked.com, the source of pretty much every single thing I know.

Yeah it is!  :D

Didn't realise it was via Cracked.com though. Interesting!

Sorry, that came out a little large...

There's a panel just up next which shows the boy giving gifts to the adults, ie, just bits and bobs which have no significance to anyone but to him, it's probably all he has. And it shows the people who have suffered so much during the war in Bosnia, still have the desire to entertain guests and hold on to life no matter what it throws at them. I think it's a powerful panel.

Well so far I'm enjoying both books! I started on Palestine but couldn't resist having a little read on Safe Area Gorazde too, especially after PreacherCain's comments. I feel his artwork is perhaps more accesible in Safe Area, than in Palestine. I just love this panel here...

What this show has highlighted, and the comic as well to great effect, is that when the chips are down, people really do turn into proper nut jobs.

Not necessarily...  http://www.academia.edu/2848720/DON_T_PANIC_Altruistic_behaviour_in_crowd_emergencies

Sorry, I should probably rephrase that to 'some' as opposed to the majority. But sometimes, it can take one person or a group of people to try and take advantage of the status quo. I'm sure there are plenty of cases throughout history of this being the case, and also in films. Not only in The Walking Dead series but The Mist, with Marcia Gay Harden's character who tries to take advantage of people's fears and use it to attack others.

That's an excellent essay by the way!

Forget the zombies, it's the humans which fucking scare me.

We'll see once I've exhausted all the Smiths that can be visited as part of my commute...

I was lucky enough to find the last copy in my newsagents. I think it's going like hot cakes (at least I hope it does!). I was planning on getting another copy just in case a fellow boarder was after one. Alas....I think it's worth the delivery cost. If you don't find a copy, then get it from Tharg.  ;)

Have you guys encountered any of Joe Sacco's works before? I've always been familiar with his name but had yet to read any of his books. Thankfully that all changed yesterday when I popped into my library with my boy and found not one, but two of his books on display; Palestine and Safe Area Gorazde. Just in the process of reading them both so I'll let you know how it goes.

Haven't read Palestine, but if you enjoy Safe Area Gorazde you may also enjoy the follow-up book The Fixer and his Journalism anthology. His new book from Fantagraphics seems to a be surrealist humour book....

Thanks! I'll be sure to add them to my reading list. Started on Palestine, Sacco's art is something else.

Safe Area Gorazde is one of the best (and most upsetting) comics I've ever read.

Footnotes in Gaza is definitely worth reading after Palestine too.

I can recall you sharing  it on the other forum (comic shack) now that you mention it, makes me want to read it even more now! (It'll have to wait though, Palestine first!). Is Footnotes in Gaza also by Sacco, or a different writer/ artist?

How good was Darren Douglas' artwork on Anderson? I bloody loved it! So was Lee Carter's on Trooper and Leigh Gallagher's on Defoe, in fact, this whole Winter Special was a great show piece for 2000ad's great art droids.

Storywise,  really enjoyed Rennie and Beeby's Alienist, as well as Pat Mills' Defoe: Frankensteiner. It was a great way to show how Defoe got into the Reek killing business. I for one cannot wait for its return next year.

It's true the Dredd and Anderson story were quite similar in tone, but nonetheless I really enjoyed them, especially the latter.

On this evidence I wish we could have a Special every month!

I'm a bit disappointed to see The Master back again, I was hoping Missy would be a totally new Who villain. But, on the plus side, it's great they brought the character back as a woman now. There's something about Missy which I find really creepy, especially when we see her immitating a robot! And I love that kiss, it knocked the Doctor back for six!  :D
Missy is the Master?  ::)
My son pointed out the Cybermen before they even showed up. Sometimes kids can see or sense things we 'dults can't I suppose, but I'm mighty impressed with his enthusiasm.  :)

Okay, if the Doctor and Missy were in the 'Nethesphere', how did she open the door and end up in London? Or was it here (i.e in London) all the time? Must be a dimensional thing surely?

Good episode though, a big improvement on last week.

The cyber men were in last week's trailer.

The Matrix core is from the Matrix. A computer simulated world (like the film the MatrIx but done in dr who 29 years or so earlier) into which minds can be uploaded. So the minds go there to have emotion removed and then are installed into cybermen bodies, which are corpses turned into mostly robot

Sorry Dr X, missed your post!

I didn't realise they were in the trailer, and funny you should say The Matrix 'cos that's the first thing I thought of when I saw it. Good to know the good old Doctor was here first though! I've really vague memories of the older series, hence my lack of knowledge on certain Who lore, sadly.  :'(

Thanks for the recap though!

That is utterly gorgeous, Goaty. I seriously feel that Si Fraser is up there alongside Moebius in creating stunning sci-fi landscapes/ cityscapes. I remember when I first encountered Nikolai Dante, I was gobsmacked at some of his work, especially those engrossing splash pages. The guy is one hell of a talent. I can't wait to see the new Lilly McKenzie story in the Meg (he told me a while back that it would be likely, hope it happens soon).

Apologies again mate. Feel like a real knob. I know you didn't mean anything by it. This is by far the most open and friendly forum I've had the pleasure of being a part of. Long may it continue!
