Jim.

I've already said I thought it was going to be a challenging listen but feel free to cherry pick parts of what I've said to make a point. Call me a maverick but I decided to begin listening to the podcast anyway.

I don't like most of what Garth Ennis did for the prog and have read very little of his work elsewhere. However I find him really interesting to listen to.

Nikolai Dante. Not one of my favourite characters and therefore was going to be a challenging listen for a 2 hour podcast.

Could I respectfully suggest not listening to two hours of a thing you already know you won't enjoy before you start?

You may suggest it but not being blessed with precognitive powers I did not know I wasn't going to enjoy it before I started.

I subscribe to the podcast and listen to most of them. I usually enjoy the Thrillcast.

As I wrote in my post, being a sensible chap, I didn't listen to two hours of it. I stuck with it until the Dante is Trump comment which I thought was bizarre (I think the co-creator did as well) and decided, not being a particular fan of the character, it wasn't worth me listening to it any further.

Stuck with it until one of the creators, forget which, seriously claiming that Nikolai Dante is Donald Trump. Eh!!??.

Does anyone think with BCS that there should be more scenes set in the present?

I'm currently reading the "I may get shot for this..." thread on this very forum. Just when you thought it was about Carlos it turns out to be Ron.

It is gripping stuff. Lee Child take note.

Yes Soul Music is a good listen although I only listen to the songs I'm interested in. I'd also recommend the Theme from New York, New York one as well. I never liked the 'A Number One' line or the fact it is repeated so quickly.

Yes. Go for the Dave Gibbons original.

What colour was the helmet anyway? Green? Brown? I have seen Dave Gibbons art with both.

Bad enough that arguments start over Dredd's uniform colour but this could be the new big discussion point on the forum.

Better not call Saul I think. A brilliant first season with the exception of the final episode which was rubbish (put that on the DVD cover).

I think its just that I know exactly what Jimmy/Saul is going to do in every scene, even down to his hand movements.

Favourite character on the show for me is actually Howard. The actor is perfect in that role.

The entire audiobook is 60 hours long.

I like listening to audiobooks on my generic mp3 device but most of them will be around the 11-12 hour mark. Even with some of those I get a bit bored and have to come back to them in a week.

I might wait for the abridged version.

I think we are very lucky to have had artists like Ron and Carlos work on Judge Dredd and comics in general. Never mind being Dredd artists they would both be in my top 5 artists. Their art brings back a lot of memories.

A pity DC Thomson don't reprint a lot of their earlier stuff because Ron did a lot of great work for them in comics like Warlord and the Hotspur and I think a lot of the younger generation of readers would really like them.

I found my old copy of the game recently when cleaning out the attic. I have Judgement Day as well. I gather from another thread that Mick McMahon was a bit annoyed about the cover to Judgment Day (because of the similarity to his cover to Prog 61).

I also had an adventure from White Dwarf called "The Spunng Ones".

Still trying to finish off the second season of Better Call Saul. Bob Odenkirk is probably better when playing a supporting character. When he's the main event his acting style gets a bit tired and samey.

That said I wasn't a fan of Breaking Bad. It was okay but nothing to rave about.

1. Ezquerra
2. McMahon
3. Henry Flint
4. Ron Smith
5. Cam Kennedy

Excellent list! This sums it up for me as well, but not necessarily in that order...

Add a place for Colin Macneil and I think that would be just about anybody's top 6 of Dredd artists!

I'd move Kennedy up a bit and replace Flint with Dillon.
If it were a cover artists only list I'd make it Ezquerra, McMahon, Bolland, Robinson.

The big four will always be Ron Smith, Brian Bolland, Mick McMahon and Carlos Ezquerra.  Not necessarily in that order. They defined Dredd. I'd give the next place to Ian Gibson, especially his work in the early progs.

Its actually made a good talking point this as you can tell from the number of replies. I think if you don't like it then you don't like it.

Hard to put in to words but his art just has a certain look about it that is perfect for action strips. He can also draw Dredd as quite an imposing presence and you can tell what he's thinking just by the way Carlos has drawn the mouth. Kind of like a comic version of Eastwood's 'man with no name' character. Speaking of which I think Brian Bolland was sometimes guilty of exaggerating the mouth into an upturned U shape which I felt didn't always look right.

For some people as well Carlos will always have nostalgic value. I can remember him drawing comics back in the 70's (mainly Battle as I didn't associate him with 2000AD until Strontium Dog). Really his art style hasn't changed much since then and you would know its the same guy. Bolland has still much the same style but you just don't see his art as much these days.

Strangely for me Carlos is the only artist who can colour Dredd's uniform black and it looks better. With every other artist I can think of the uniform looks better dark blue.

While I wouldn't say he was better than Bolland, if memory serves Barry Kitson came along at a time when a lot of the big names had departed to the US.

He had a clean, anatomically correct art style which I think the prog needed then. I would definitely put him above the painted Bisley clone art that was to come.
