Film Discussion / Re: Fantasy sequel Thread.

I trust Alex Garland and hope his vision, no matter how doomed he paints it, comes to the screen.

Other than that, I'd love to see Diane Lane return to play Hershey (but with less smooching)

Well...
in the first series maybe. If you've not seen the second then it throws a few curveballs!
...all a bit academic now, I guess. :(

Film & TV / Almighty Johnsons cancelled

Hi all

Posting this as I understand the series was picked up by UK TV (and in Australia too?) A sad and very frustrating day for NZ genre TV, already a very small player in a tough market.

Cheers Mr Wells

It's still a wee way* before the movie gets down to NZ, so hopefully I can be approved by then!

Er, can I ask exactly the same question? I'm happy to post in other threads but I'm not a regular reader of the prog these days and I'm sure I can only talk for so long about what I last watched/read/heard/ate etc...

I'm really not that interesting! Not compared to a 3D action movie anyway  ;)

Seems quite straightforward to me. It started in 1963. It's still going in 2012. Now, longest consecutively running sci-fi tv show is a different thing altogether, and DW is obviously out of the running. I think Star Gate currently lays claim to that one.
Stargate started in 1997 - only 16 years ago - how is that longer than a consecutive run of 1963 to 1989?

I was calling shenanigans on the Stargate thing for a long time until I recently became reminded of how absolutely new Who seems to be to some corners of Geekdom - even today. Seriously, Aint It Cool News just had an article about the five greatest DW episodes, and there was nothing from before 2005. Now armed with that knowledge, and if I can assume the Guinness board was stacked with Americans with their eyes off the international scene... yeah, I could buy that.

Music / Re: What's everyone listening to...?

Currently listening to some Big Finish Dr Who, so that doesn't count. But Father's day is on Sunday and boy am I looking forward to my present:

The Darkness Hot Cakes

Yeah yeah, come at me buddy. When I listen to it I'm sixteen again and everything is good. After THAT I can get all worthy and check out the new Bailter Space album and feel... er, twenty.

Scrolling down the iPod... I've nothing to declare until I get to L!

Letter From America

Some might think that uncool, I don't care. Early Proclaimers is pretty lippy and interesting. That's the only one of theirs I've got on at the moment but even some of Sunshine on Leith I'd go for as well.

This is hard - so many iconic covers, and lots of Apocalypse War-era ones. Ezquerra's "It's Lawmaster versus Rad Sweeper - and I don't intend to lose!", Bolland's Dredd as a Sov Judge (including the text, obv) and later on the opening centre spread for City of the Damned...

Okay, for me it's Bolland again, and Anderson/Dredd breaking through the barrier to Billy Carter block. Great expressions, really dynamic image, and it's all there in that image.

is it the mark of a real talent or me getting older when I hear about Tony Scott dead at 68 and think "too soon"?

D'oh! Of course - that explains it! Thanks guys.

So... what's it to be, clones, robots or imports?

Damn. Another author I've just not read anything near enough of. The 2000AD strips got me reading Stainless Steel Rat Saves the World, and I'll always picture Jim with an Ezquerra face. From that I read Make Room! Make Room! and then sort of stopped.

Very cool writing style. I should have read more.
