SMS is a good shout. Some lovely stuff.

I liked Lol's artwork on O'Rourke in the Meg. It was all over the place really but I enjoyed the energy of it.

Yep I've ordered this and the Harrison one too. Interesting wee publisher, I hope they have some more obscure stuff from 2000ad folk lined up.

Just going to keep posting separate comments here as they come to me, sorry! I wasn't a fan of Jim McCarthy's work for a long while. I wonder if it's because when I rejoined the readership somewhere in the prog 900s he was working on Bix Barton, which I didn't really 'get' at the time, plus Grudgefather which I only caught the tail end of and Kid Cyborg which at the time I thought was rubbish (sorry Kek!). Something about the colouring on Bix just didn't appeal to me too. I appreciate his work a lot more these days. Very distinctive stuff.

Possibly worth mentioning that Jesus Redondo was seriously underrated in some quarters - notably Titan books not reprinting his Nemesis stuff.

Quote from: JayzusB.Christ on 02 November, 2023, 06:14:22 PMThe Siku Christianity thing - well, you learn something new every day.

Well, he did do a 'manga' adaptation of the Bible...

To be fair, Bisley did a Bible too, but being Bisley filled it with tits end arses.

Shame about Siku. Didn't he have a brother who wrote one of the Pan African Judges stories? Or was he just credited twice?

Yeah he definitely worked with his brother - I think it was the second Pan African Judges series.

Would anyone think of Paul Marshall as under appreciated? I rejoined the prog in the early 90s after a few years away and his work was always coloured by Dondie Cox, and I really didn't like it. I'm not sure why. But I've really come to see him as an artist that can just deliver the goods - his storytelling is always clear and fluid, his designs are solid, and with someone like Dylan Teague colouring him his stuff looks great. Leatherjack is a favourite of mine - any mad idea John Smith throws at him he tackles perfectly. I had a similar curve with Ron Smith - it took me a while to recognise how brilliant his stuff is.

Always loved Siku, especially his colours. I remember his Dredd winding people up because he really was 95% chin but I thought it was good fun!

I didn't mind the second season but also felt it didn't really need to exist. The first was a perfect one-and-done.

This sounds good! Looking forward to it.

Books & Comics / Re: Bogie Man Coming to Kickstarter

Halfway through the collection and thoroughly enjoying it. Smith's art is really strong here and the whole thing is even funnier than I expected. Going to lend it to my dad, I think he'll get a kick out of all the Scots humour.

My favourite part though has been John Wagner's little biog of himself at the end of the book. It's about the most John Wagnery thing I've ever read - perfectly pitched and dry as a bone!

My hardback copy arrived today and very nice it is too! Haven't read the earlier stories and thoroughly enjoying it so far.

Prog / Re: Prog 2350 - 2000ad Battle Action*
06 October, 2023, 11:22:29 AM
For me this prog looked fantastic and the strips were good, but I don't have any nostalgia for Battle/Action characters so it was just another week, along with the Regened weeks, where I'm missing a proper 2000ad, which is what I'm interested in. I find it harder to get into one-off episodes like this where I know they're designed to be one and done and there's nothing to get invested in. The prog itself has ongoing stories and characters that I care about and I want to see what happens next. I'm not complaining mind, no problem with Regened or with 2000ad trying out this or things like the zombie crossover, I prefer the standard prog.

I thought McKay was really good, lots of energy in his work. I'd happily see him back at some point.

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in. Never read Shadows and remember enjoying Counterfeit Girl so I'll cherry pick this one. Not fussed at all about Bix Barton but never mind.

General / Re: How do you like your Sinister Dexter?
06 September, 2023, 11:58:11 AM
I thought Tracy Weld's character was a bit hard done by. I got quite invested in the character around the time of Dexter disappearing/being in hospital etc and she was assigned to that task force. There as some emotional heft there. I realise that was years ago.  But it seemed like in the long-running arc before Bulletipia (forgotten what it was called she became a kind of non-character. Now she's been turned into a creepfake and I sort of don't mind her trying to kill Dexter because I think he was a bit of a crap partner. Now he's decided he's in love with Hosanna of course which had a few boarders a bit miffed.

Anyway I'm just rambling while I'm at work. I've enjoyed the strip overall in recent years. But I'd agree Dexter (and Finny) as characters have never been fleshed out much, and are basically invincible, so it tends to be the side-characters like Billie I'm more interested in.
