Off Topic / Re: PS2 games- too clever for thei...

First time through, it was on 'Normal' funnily enough....

I've since dabbled with 'Hard' but to be honest, its' re-playability factor is low.

Anyway, the single player option was never my intended path, but even if I was about to throw more money away on a Gamespy subscription, they don't seem to be supporting Dredd Vs Death now anyway.

If anyone knows of an independant host that's regularly offering up Dredd Vs Death, please let me know.

Also, there was a distinct lack of press re: the linear style of the game, I guess I'm not alone when I say that a bit more freedom would have been good, if not essential.

Obviously it was going to be difficult to live up to the expectations of Dredd fans who were also regular gamers, but who else was likely to buy this game ?

I've found that grabbing the Judge skins for Unreal Tournament has been considerably more entertaining, even without 'Rag Doll' technology !

I'd be interested to know what Shorelines' plans are now, and if any further games are going to made in conjunction with the film production (assuming it's still going ahead). You know, like the Starwars titles, most of which had scenes and scenarios developed simulataneously between the game producers and the film producers. For example in 'The Phantom Menace' on the PSX (still essentially a linear game) it was possible to explore the village on Coruscant at length, meeting many characters not included in the movie.

These are the kind of touches that make the difference between 'longevity' and 'flash in the pan'.

I'm ranting again, dammit.

I recently purchased an ex graphics rendering host on ebay, with the specific intention of playing Dredd Vs Death multiplayer, and nothing else.

An outrageous display of vulgar consumerism, some might say.

However, having watched the XBox Vs PS2 fiasco develop over the past few years, my opinions of  consoles changed somewhat. As a serious PSX freak (some 150 titles) the urge to get the next generation of consoles was strong.

BUT..

I've never been a fan of 'built in obsolescence' so denied myself the pleasure for a few years, once the prices come down, I'm in.

OR SO I THOUGHT...

Piracy is in the eye of the beholder as far as I can see it. If you've got a moral problem with it, you won't do it, and continue to support the industry through your purchases. If you don't have a problem with it, the only question is how far you are prepared to go. How long before you're trading dvd rips/cracks for pornography is any ones guess. On the other hand you may download or purchase the odd bit of pirated software or games and still purchase the full title for the ones that really matter to you.

And this is probably where the majority of senior gamers are to be found. Not hard core Warez elite, but just your average Joe who deosn't want to get ripped off, but still enjoys trusting a brand name, and the benefits that it lends the consumer.

On a final note, the saga of the new machine with blistering 128mb gfx card intended as the subsititute for a console, ends on a strange note.

After slotting in the various network cards and sound cards and new ram and and and... I prepared myself for the experience of a lifetime. The demo of Dredd Vs Death had filled me with hope, and as I adjusted the surround sound, anticiaption is too small a word.

AND THEN ...

I completed it in 6 hours.

Now, what is the approximate value of a game which I have had to upgrade for and sweated blood over to get working at its optimum, and then finished in the same day  ?

Not to mention the blatant lack of any servers hosting the multiplayer games...

I'm not going to rant about my disappointment here, it's not an appropriate medium, but suffice to say, I wasn't chuffed.

Did I not only waste my time but wasted the price of some bandwidth and 2 blank CDs ?

Meanwhile I continue to play GTA4, Quake3Arena, Unreal Tournament, Aliens Vs Predator2, Doom3 and various others including PSX titles given a new lease of life by Bleem!, long before I re-run Dredd Vs Death.

NOTE* the views espressed here are entirely hypothetical, and the author does not condone, support or endorse piracy, honestly Jason.

I have to concur, having settled for a cam copy my disillusion was made only worse by the lame assed quality of the picture.

Seems like more of a Predator movie than Alien, and once again I agree that it could well be the 'nail in the coffin' for both.

Having said that, I grabbed http://download.theforce.net/theater/batman-deadend/Batman_Dead_End_Full_Screen.mpg">Batman - Dead End recently, and was thouroughly impressed. Sandy Colohran is a god damned genius, if somewhat mentalist. If anyone could pull Aliens or Predator back from this complete fiasco, it's him and his equally insane friends.

Must be said, we're in a bit of a trough these days for movies, what with the passing of the LOTR, Matrix and Star Wars commercial extravaganzas. The only thing that has me waiting in anticipation (other than Dredd, as ususal) is The Bourne Ultimatum, question is... are they going to write new Bourne scripts after No.3 is done ?

After all, let's face facts, Bond is dead in the water.

Help! / Re: computer game boffin needed!.....

Sorry to be like, the voice of doom after a disaster, but i don't think this would ever have worked.

The CLI in win2k is similar to DOS, but as Slippery mentioned earlier, it's just a bolt on, not the foundations, like it used to be with 9X.

Add to that the problems with FAT32 versus NTFS(Not to f***ing sure) ie: the standard the hard disk is using, and you have a glorious wealth of incompatibility issues.

And it's not just down to software, a whole load of scanners, printers and other hardware won't work with 2k or xp.

However, you could run a dual operating system, it's not difficult.

Use "Partition Magic" which has an option for installing additional operating systems, then dig out your old 98se or 95 systems disks and go for it.

If you don't have said software, you could do it manually, but a full backup of all your important files would be sensible first. Then use FDISK to set up some partitions, format them, then install your choice of OS, oldest first. Win2k always gives you the option to install as an 'additional' as well as a 'replacement' operating system.

Hell of a lot of work, just to play a retro game !

And personally i wouldn't even consider it without a running network on broadband, cause you'll need drivers for all your hardware for both OS...

Dr Teeth was like, totally the wickedest cat, man.

But Gonzo was the true protagonist.

Heard an interesting fact about the muppets, that they couldn't get funding in the states, so they started it off with a Uk audience.

Most odd.

To concur with the sentiment in one of the eralier posts about Magneto. The humanising of the villain always gets me. In particular the whole Judge Death / Mrs Gunderson thing.

Well, all this talk about 'frog marching' and 'blooded noses' is indicative of massive insecurities. Unfortunately, i do know what I'm talking about.

Having spent my former career dealing with the kind of stereotypes Bou uses in the 'this happened to me one night at my local 2 bit boozer' anecdotes. I find myself fascinated with online social interaction, mainly due to the fact that there is absolutely NO physicality.

So look at it this way, in many ways rc has shown himself to be a 'heavyweight' and by uniting in a war on cyber terrorism, many of YOU (not "us" ok PVS ?) have displayed the classic signs of what I termed earlier as the mob mentality.

I say this not as one of your close friends, nor as part of any clique. I wouldn't spit champagne on any of your rad-fires, including rc.

So what right do I have posting up my critique ?Merely as an observationalist,,ism..thing

And for the sake of any younger readers who may stray on to the board from time to time, perhaps implied threats or harping on about how 'hard' you are really isn't the way forward. Obviously that's only my opinion, do as thou wilt.

Besides, in cyberspace no one can hear your knuckles crack.

PVS, how long do you spend thinking about what you're typing, becuase frankly I'm struggling to see your point.

Quotes padded out with erroneous logic are a bit too '7 pints down' for my tastes, so I'll have to ask for help here....

What ?

hmmm, seems there has been definite progress with identifying a problem here.

Cliques are possibly one of the most disturbing aspects of any community / online or not.

Unfortunately, there is a very real example of this here.

Now before all you reactionaries start posting up inane comments to the value of 'You are a prat/prick etc' like the responses to my flaring of PVS, stop for a moment, and consider the facts.

Half of this thread revolves around a sentiment of "If they don't agree, let's ignore them". If that isn't blatant evidence of secular/irrational attitudes, then I'm a flower presser.

In fact, I'd go even further and say that a lot of you are guilty of a 'mob mentality'

So maybe think about that before you post, as any spontaneous backlash will more than likely be perceived as something approximating vindication.

If you require further evidence, simply read through some of the responses to rc's posts. There you will see that he may indeed be guilty of 'trollesque' behaviour, but that is no excuse for obscenity and moronic rejoinders. Ultimately it's neither offensive nor potent, simply dissapointing, lame and quite, quite pathetic.

There is a happy ground you know, it doesn't have to be one or the other. There is room for the odd bit of confrontation and friction, in fact without it, many users would find the entire experience unsatisfactory, not to mention dull.

In answer to the original question "What's happened to us" ,Mr Dribbles

perhaps the key word there is "us"

who exactly is "us" supposed to be ? does it include everyone, or just a little group of your online buddies ?

"If we can just let this thread die now, I'd be grateful, I started it with the best of intentions. It's done it's job, there is a debate tag, there's no reason to be here, let's go!"

Well, with an online translator similar to babelfish, i managed to come up with this rough translation..

"I don't want to play anymore, it's my ball, if I'm not playing , no-one can etc. - all my friends who want to play with the ball, come with me now etc etc."

I may be exagerating somewhat for effect, but essentialy, that's what you're saying.

Don't you get it PBS, the whole point is this - there are those amongst us who object to your moralising.

There are those amongst us also, who think you are a splendid chap, that's fine, however it's not your place to point out where and when any posts are to be made, regardless of their content.

And the only reason my so called 'flaring' is bi annual, is because I don't actually spend every day of my life on this board.

(If I did, I'd probably disagree with you a lot more often)

And as for your 'making an official complaint to the webmaster' ....

jeez, how much more of a school playground analogy could be made here ?

MaxNormal was the greatest informer in the history of JD, suck eggs grandma !

And I say to you, Mr PVA, that perhaps it is time for you to put away such childish notions of online vindication.

Hasn't it occured to you yet, that no one actually gives a whooping funt about your pompous posturing.

Frankly you strike me as without exception the most 'personality by-passed' individual on this board. And one that has somehow managed to read 2000ad for years without absorbing a fraction of it's wit.

Not everyone sees the world through your grey tinted lenses, and perhaps a bit of flair and panache on the board is a good thing.

Does it have to be tagged 'Humorous & Potential for Laughter' or maybe a big flashing Gif pointing at it indicating it's appropriate readership.

Face it, if everything was as categorised as your music collection, the world would be a dull(er) place. I for one like to see the odd bit of spontaneous banter, which may or may not be at the expense of another member.

And anyway, it's an online community, not Gosplan.

If there's one thing more annoying than provocation or trolls, it's the condescending "aren't we so mature" brigade of psychophants that plague this board.

If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

Sweet Grud !

Don't you get sick of being a pedantic fool PSV ?

Sometime ago, you accused me of not contributing anything to the board for months on end, then appear after a lengthy sabbatical with this purile nonsense.

Perhaps you're displaying a desperate need for attention based on your lack of confidence, undoubtedly stemming from inadequate social skills. But it really makes no difference. This is a forum, not a wendy house.

Get a grip, or a more worthwhile career, or something.

And oh yeah, I forgot to add .. THIS IS A TROLL

(does that help ?)

Apologies to anyone else who considers this as unreasonable terminology, but i mean .... rilly ...
