Help! / Brit-Cit
17 July, 2007, 09:52:03 PM
What's Brit-Cit like in the world of Dredd?  I've got a few episodes of Armitage, and Brit-Cit's involvement in getting rid of Narcos Neros (that his name?).  But I want /more/!

You see, I'm thinking of writing some fan-fic, maybe a comic, based in Brit-Cit.  So if anyone here can describe the Brit-Cit setup, or tell me which progs might help, I'll be mighty grateful!

Books & Comics / Re: Slaine is awsome.

I agree that Pat Mills sometimes plays fast and loose with Celtic history, but Slaine was never meant to be a history lesson.

And one thing Slaine's done for me is to spark an interest in all things Celtic - especially the idea of Goddess worship.

Before you all scoff at me, I'd like to make it clear that I'm /not/ a card-carrying Wiccan - I've never gone for organized religion in any way - but the basic ideals of Goddess worship have struck a chord within me, so much that I try to observe all the festivals - the wine flows freely, the magic mushrooms are passed round, it beats the hell out of Christian holy days.

If anyone's at all interested in Goddess worship, check out the book The Goddess - A Beginner's Guide by Teresa Moorey, published in the UK by Headway/Hodder & Stoughton 1997.

General / So what's up with the IRC then?

I've never been to the #2000AD IRC before.  So I decided to check it out last week (or was it the week before?  My brain has difficulty counting over 2), and there was no one there!!  So, is the channel active?  If so, exactly when?

Oh God yeah, I loved reading as a kid, but after doing a degree course in Literature I found myself analysing and intellectualising everything - even Sven Hassel!!

The Pit introduced a new kind of story telling to the Dredd strip.  Before that, the great epics involved the Meg invaded or close destruction then Dredd, Anderson and a couple of mates would save the city.  The Pit wasn't like that - it concentrated on character development, the fact that judges are people too (Demarco's sexcrimes, her partner's drug addiction, and the corruption in the sector house)

But the story was spoilt by its ending.  The introduction of the local Frendz boss came rather late in the day (up till then the Frendz had been just a shadowy "them" in the background), and the sector-wide riot was too contrived and harked back to the finale of some of the other epics.

Prog / Re: Prog 1538 Take cover creeps...

I agree with Smiley about the Detonator X art.  If you wanna do giant robots, you gotta have them trampling cars, houses, people... you know, to show us the scale.

The Dredd was awful though.  The story was all over the place - Justice Dept have just one picture of the baddie even though they can go round his place for a chat - one of those awful, hanging-in-the-air endings - no no no!

It's nice to see SinDex again.  I loved the pic of Dexter killing the villain - scissors in the eye, that's gotta hurt!

Suggestions / Re: Writing To Tharg

Why have you posted a photo of a letterbox?
And why  hasn't Tharg received any of my mail?

Suggestions / Re: Writing To Tharg

I stopped buying 2000AD in my teens, when sex and drugs and rock n roll distracted me.  I didn't write in then.  I started collecting again at prog 958, and bought pretty regularly up to about 1150ish - in that time I wrote in a few times and had 2, maybe 3 letters published... anyway, I got an enamel badge, a set of postcards, and I'm STILL OWED A BADGE, THARG YOU GREEN GREENIE!!  I've had a couple of letters printed in the Megazine too, and never got any kind of prize for them.

I started collecting yet again about 4 weeks ago, and I've emailed Tharg every week - fruitlessly of course, 2000AD would rather carry shitty ads for crummy paperback novels than print my half-sycophantic half-scathing missives.  Maybe if I just sent Tharg Valentine's cards he'd print the things.  But no, I slag off the stuff I think is shite, and lo and behold nothing sees the light of day.

But no letters at all are getting printed right now, so maybe it isn't a conspiracy against me.  Then again, maybe he's withholding all letters just to make sure I don't slip in using a pseudonym.

Flamin' Betelgeusians... you just can't trust ETs...

And what about Steve Yeowell?  Compare his work on Zenith to what he's doing now on Detonator X.  Nowadays he draws everyone with their eyes shut.  And a lot of his characters have the same face...
