Games / Star Wars Squadrons
« on: 04 October, 2020, 06:33:58 PM »
I've been playing this all weekend on PC VR. Wobbly legs aside, it's one of the best gaming experiences I've had in years. Anyone who fondly remembers Lucasarts X-Wing/Tie Fighter/X-Wing Alliance will get a huge buzz out of this game, which is essentially a belt-and-braces remaster of the old classics with much better graphics and audio.

Sure, the characters are slightly less interesting, and sure, the whole thing is more gung-ho expanded universe than it is classic Skywalker Saga, but do not be put off. She's got it where it counts, kid.

Since coming back to the fold a few years back, I've Boing(tm)'d between print and digital and I still can't make up my mind which I prefer.

Nothing replaces the joy of unwrapping a weekly prog and feeling those pages between your fingers. It's like that moment in Ratatouille where the food critic is taken back to warm memories of his childhood by a bowl of stew; except for me, it's memories of sitting at my Gran's house, devouring the latest prog which she'd nipped over to the newsagent and bought for me that morning.

And yet, I can't keep these things any more. They pile and pile, and we've got little enough space for all our stuff as it is. Progs and megs are just one more thing to box up and shove in a corner of the attic--except since moving house we no longer *have* a usable attic, so even that's out of the question.

Switching to digital saved me there. The collection grows but I can shove it over into the cloud, where available space per pound of money actually scales way faster than the size of the things I'm putting in it, like an ever-expanding attic. Good stuff.

Yet...it's just not the same. I can read a prog quite happily on my tablet or laptop--in fact, it's a cute game of tapping, dragging, and pinching, following the narrative around the page. It has that going for it. But it's just not the same.

I'd like the best of both worlds, but paying for two subscriptions is madness.

Can Tharg find no way to include a digital copy as part of the print subscription, or offer a preferential rate on a digital subscription for print subscribers?

I'm not the first to ask this queston, but I'd be interested in the economics of why it can't be done.

Website and Forum / Please address connection timeouts in the Windows app
« on: 17 November, 2019, 05:02:41 PM »
Hello to the software droids! Please look into continual timeouts when the Windows 2000AD app tries to connect to the store. It's a nice app but half the time I have to download directly from the website when I'd rather the app managed it for me.

Ta.

Hi all,

I'm clearing out my back issues and have two cardboard boxes full of Progs and Megazines from about 2014 onwards. I don't have time to catalogue them, so they are what they are. The only Prog I'm keeping from that period is the 2000th issue.

Collection only, no charge. I'm in Worcester, UK.

Any takers?

Other Reviews / Judges: The Avalanche (vague spoilers)
« on: 29 May, 2018, 11:06:16 AM »
I haven't read any Dreddworld novels so I thought I'd give this a go, as the period it deals with seems ripe for good storytelling.

The transition from due process to instant justice is fertile ground. The Judges are here, they're not going away, and yet no-one gets it. The villains play the usual games and get blown away. Law enforcement keeps citing lawyers and union reps and gets rolled over. It's really cool.

There are various problems. It's over too quickly. The end is a little pat. The conspiracy at the heart of the story parachutes in out of nowhere. What little is made of the Judges' background and their reasons for joining the program is kind of feeble (perhaps the biggest oversight IMO). Also, the book pulls the rug out very effectively right near the start, but never cashes-in. It feels like there's a whole middle third that's just missing.

Considering I only paid a couple of quid for it on Kindle, I wasn't disappointed. It is often very well written, but just feels like it was over-edited, perhaps in a misguided effort to keep the page count down. I'll follow the series, though; it's an intriguing setting, and with what we know of what's to come, could get very exciting indeed.

I don't know what the producers of MC1 are planning (does anyone?) but a serial set in this period would be amazing. You get all the procedural stuff, all of the conflict of old versus new order, a world on the brink of nuclear annihilation under a nutjob president, against a backdrop that doesn't look so different from what we live in now to keep the budget down. Would watch!

General / Disposing of recent back-issues, how?
« on: 20 April, 2016, 11:43:15 AM »
Hey all,

One of the promises I made to myself (and my wife) when I re-subbed was that I wouldn't hoard back-issues like I had in the past. So, I have a thingummy that contains the last couple of years of progs, and the agreement made was that when it was full, it would be emptied. This is cool with me, because anything that stands out I will purchase when it's re-released.

So, I have a couple of year's worth of progs and a year's worth of the Meg. I really don't just want to chuck them in the recycling, and I doubt they have much value. What would everyone prefer I do with them?

Cheers!

Now I admit, it's been a while since I was last here, but don't punish the rest of the board for my absence!

Can I have my posting privs back please? :)

General / Prevarication complete

I um'd. I ah'd. But I finally did it. I got the combi magazine subscription. My first prog arrived just yesterday.

It was a weird feeling, getting a 2000AD in the post. For all the years I collected it in my youth, it was always with a trip to the news-agent or WHSmith's. I loved that ritual, in fact.

So, it feels great to have it delivered to my door, but also strangely...passive as well. I'll get over it.

Games / Dredd PBeM RPG - anyone know of one?
« on: 25 October, 2013, 02:09:58 PM »
Hey all,

Does anyone know of any PBeM Dredd RPG groups and/or the forums in which they're being played? GW, Mongoose d20, or Mongoose Traveller, I don't really mind.

If I can't find one, I might be interested in starting one. Any interest from the Dredderati around here?

Cheers!

General / Catching up, one graphic novel at a time
« on: 27 August, 2013, 12:12:26 PM »
Hi all!

I've just spent the most glorious couple of weeks catching up on Origins, Tour of Duty, Day of Chaos, and soon Trifecta in a bid to bring myself up-to-date before settling back into the comics, but I also want to fill in the blanks since I stopped reading sometime around Mechanismo.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judge_Dredd#Major_Judge_Dredd_storylines I can see all the major arcs since then and most or all of them seem to have collected editions on Amazon.

However, I also notice that the complete case files have just got around to almost the exact period where I stopped reading, so I have a conundrum.

Do I grab the collected editions of all the major stories, or do I just start collecting the CCF's?

How often do the CCF's come out? Are they released with regularity? Help me, discerning ones! :)

Hey all, simple question, hopefully simple answer. See topic!

(I submitted a question from the web form but it seems to have black-holed.)

Cheers!

Welcome to the board / Greetings!
« on: 22 January, 2013, 05:08:31 PM »
Hey folks, I haven't been able to help myself, and have got back into the comics after leaving them behind about fifteen years ago. The Dredd movie was just too damn good. I can no longer be on the outside.

Everything looks great! So much to catch up on, with the Day of Chaos anthologies dropping just at the right time. And in the meantime, six boxes of progs to pull from the attic and swim around in like Scrooge McDuck.

See you all on the forums!
