General / A Call to Arms (sort of)
08 May, 2007, 10:54:01 PM
I'm not one for campaigning or activism usually, however when I see the chance to destabilise an on-line competition with a block vote in order to set the world back in the right direction I like to take it.

A friend of mine, Daniel Cox, who some may know writes 'Ka-lins Last Summer' the bizarrely non-2000AD related story at the back of Zarjaz, has taken up the challenge of Small Press Idol 2007 run by US site Dimestore Productions. His entry is a rather charming tale of zombie-superheroes in Japan which I can't do justice to in my words and so direct you to the link below.

As it currently stands he needs about 25 votes before Sunday to stay in the competition.
However much as I would like you to vote for him - I am really asking you to take the time to check out a few of the entries and realise, as I have, that talent and imagination seem to have NO bearing on the current leaderboard.

What I assume has happened is that as the voting is run through the forum of the site it is the creators most widely known on that forum that are getting all the votes.

What it needs is the members of another, slightly anarchic, forum to gatecrash the party and vote for the projects that actually sound halfway decent!

But what are the chances of that happening?

Books & Comics / Zarjaz #3 Out Now!
06 October, 2006, 08:00:21 PM
Zarjaz 3 is out now - promotional gubbins follows below -

2000AD WINTER SPECIAL STORY EXPLODES ONTO THE PAGES OF ZARJAZ!

Al Ewing is one of the newest writers for Brit sci-fi mainstay 2000AD - A regular contributor of Future Shocks and Terror Tales, Ewing recently penned his first multi-part story, Go Machine, to widespread fan acclaim.

Last year Ewing and artist Russell Hossain (Ace Of Kings) contributed to the 2000AD Winter Special, which featured strips by new writers and artists. Their story, Bones of Eden, was among the most well received but, like the other strips created for the Special, it was never picked up for the weekly or monthly comic.

Now Zarjaz â?? the 2000AD fanzine is presenting the rest of the story. Bones of Eden shows us a world where an experimental virus has turned back the cultural clock to Year Zero - leaving Washington DC crawling with hyperviolent 'cave people'. Apparently the only two people left unaffected, project workers Kristin and Mike come under the â??protectionâ?? of the psychotic cannibal, Dog. Can they escape from the deranged killer? And what dark secrets lie in wait on the blood-drenched streets of America's capital?

Ewing and Hossain reunite on the strip, giving the story complete continuity from the Winter Special. The notoriously crazed scribe was able to give us these words:

"This is probably the most violent thing I've ever written," snarled Ewing as he severed a kitten's face with one swipe of a rusty machete. "It makes Go Machine look like Sewing Machine. The reason I'm doing it for Zarjaz is because the sheer brutality of it wakes me up screaming every night and if I don't get it published somewhere I might just descend into a killing rage and start bisecting innocent grannies by the coachload. So if you don't want a Gran-pocalypse breaking out in your street, buy a copy of Zarjaz this instant."

Bones of Eden begins in Zarjaz #3, on sale now. Ordering details can be found at:
www.zarjaz.blogspot.com

Zarjaz editor Colin J Dinnie is thrilled to be giving the strip a home:
â??The Winter Special was bursting with great new ideas and character concepts and itâ??s a real shame that there just isnâ??t the space in 2000AD to give them all a full run. I was very excited when Al asked if we wanted to complete Bones of Eden and bowled over when Russell said he would come on board â?? itâ??s a proud moment for Zarjaz.â? He also dispels any worries for those who havenâ??t read the Winter Special. â??One of the great things about Alâ??s writing is that the episodes in Zarjaz will make a complete story in themselves. The Winter Special story acts as a prologue to the main action.â?

24 January, 2005, 12:38:02 AM
Hello!

Top 2000AD fanzine ZARJAZ is coming back in 2005.

Former edit droid Andrew Lewis has handed over to Underfire Comic's Colin Dinnie to produce a fantastic new look mag. Zarjaz aims to be 'by the fans for the fans' so we are looking for contributers right across the board. If you are an artist or writer please get in touch for submission guidelines or if you have ideas for articles and other non-fiction pieces then we'll be glad to have them. You can reach us at zarjazcomic@yahoo.co.uk

We'll be looking to re-live the old school thrills of classic 2000AD and also celebrate what we love about Tharg's organ now! Its all not for profit and just for fun - so please join us in making the Galaxy's (second) Greatest Comic!
