On my bookshelves and in my boxes. Actual comics! ;)

I'm also generally disappointed with Mongoose's production standards, so the prospect of spending money on poorly typeset and proofread sourcebooks does not excite.  I fear that nit-picking is the wrong metaphor.  Something to do with Augean stables might be more appropriate.

I got the Savage Worlds RPG system a few months ago and really like its simplicity. If I ever get round to running my Slaine game again, I'll be using this (RuneQuest is totally unsuitable for Slaine as they admitted by making the introductory scenario about, um, cattle rustling). I'd be tempted to use it for Dredd too.

I'm not sure the joy of nitpicking is worth the £180 it will cost me to buy all 12 volumes of this series.

I've played two games of Mongoose Dredd now and I like it - with a couple of tweaks the Traveller system works really well and character generation turns out tough judges with some nice variation..

I was briefly tempted to buy this, but I'm not sure I can be bothered coughing up for yet another JDRPG.

I'm fairly disappointed by how Mongoose have been handling the 2000AD license.  They seem to see it as a minor way of cashing in on Traveller/RuneQuest fans rather than as a way of bringing 2000AD fans into the hobby.  At least when they produced the D20 versions there was an argument that by sticking with the D&D system you were tapping into a larger market.  Traveller and RuneQuest don't compare.

Thanks. I share people's concerns about Mongoose (not convinced of the wisdom of making the new RPG based on Traveller which seems to be more designed to cash in on Traveller completists than introduce JD fans to RPG).

Suggestions / Re: Dredd stories adapted for audio
12 July, 2009, 07:05:35 PM
I may yet be tempted by the new format, but I was rather disappointed by the last series.

Indeed, I need a bit of convincing that Dredd is right for audio. It is an essentially quite visual comic.

That said, I did enjoy the Strontium Dog audios and I think there are 2000AD strips that would work well with the medium. Caballistics, Inc, Indigo Prime, Durham Red and Anderson, Psi all have strong possibilities and I would love to some day hear that Gordon Rennie Rogue Trooper audio that never got released.

Games / Re: Slaine for Savage Worlds

Thanks for this. Very interesting and motivated me into buying Savage Worlds.  If I ever do get around to playing Slaine again (I think it is a great RPG setting), I might well use this.

The D20 system is fine as far as it goes but a little cumbersome.  While I love RuneQuest as a setting (Glorantha) and have a soft spot for the setting, it seemed to take the game even further from the action and mayhem nature of the comic (I remember trying to run a WFRP game using RuneQuest rules many years ago - we abandoned it after I inadvertantly killed and maimed most of the characters during the first encounter!).  It is notable that the D20 version had epic adventures such as Horned Lord and Moon Sow while the RuneQuest version comes with an adventure about cattle rustling.

Games / Re: Judge Dredd RPG out in July

I think Dredd makes for a good, but somewhat limited RPG setting.  I used to play the GW version in the 80s and would compare the experience as most close to Ghostbusters (which I've just found is now available for free online) and Paranoia.

The D20 version was okay as far as it goes.  I was initially quite excited by the idea of D20 but the system really is quite limiting.  I'm not sure I can justify buying a whole new suite of books for the game again.  From what I've been able to make out of the Traveller "System Reference Document" it seems a little over complex.

I bought the Savage Worlds rulebook the other day and I have to say it is along the lines of what I'd want to see a system for JD to look like.  I've noticed there is a Savage Worlds Dredd conversion available already (pdf).
