Prog / Re: Prog 1637: TERMINAL VELOCITY!

Cradlegrave is the best new thing I've read in the Prog for a long time.  Also enjoying Slaine and Savage.

Never been much of a fan of 'torture-porn' horror so Zombo is starting to leave me a bit cold to be honest.  It's weird, I enjoyed every minute of the ultraviolence in Blood Of Saturnus III recently in the Meg but that last episode of Zombo just left a nasty taste in the mouth.  Did anybody else find this or am I just a big girl?

The recent Blood Of Satanus III was my first exposure to Mr Hinkleton's extraordinary work.  Inspired me enough to write a gushing tribute to Dreddlines.  I've since seen his Nemesis work and that's even better, utterly demonic and crackling with energy!  A truly unique artist.

Quote from: "IndigoPrime"Sure, the 21st Century Judge knowing a very old pop song jars massively (and, frankly, this dialogue could and should have been cut, which would have made for a better strip).

Except it ain't a 'pop song', it's 'Beneath The Remains' by Brazilian Thrash Metal band Sepultura.

While you're right to suggest that the Judges wouldn't bother with throwaway pop nonsense it doesn't surprise me at all to learn that they're well versed in timeless Thrash classics.  Perhaps they're played during combat training to get them 'pumped up'.

This along with the Death Metal references in a recent ABC Warriors shows that Mills is a man who knows his Extreme music.  Good for him I say!

Completely agree with all the comments in praise of Stalag 666.  It makes a change to read something that doesn't make my head hurt.  Also really enjoying ABC Warriors, mostly because of the artwork.

Agree 100% regarding book reviews!  The TV / Film stuff are the only things I tend to skip through.

Other than that I'm liking the Meg at moment.  I think the free graphic novel is a fantastic idea.  A great way to showcase some old stuff that isn't likely to find it's way into the shops.

On this subject, I don't understand the people who are complaining that it's not a graphic novel.  It was never going to be the same size or quality as the stuff they're selling for £12+ in Waterstones.  That would surely have been a ludicrous move on Rebellion's part.  I'm struggling to understand what it is people were expecting?

Wow!  I used to be a massive Red Dwarf fan back in the day but I can't help feeling slightly underwhelmed by only two new 'proper' episodes.  Has the potential to be extremely good or extremely bad.

Time will tell...

Megazine / Re: So is it worth it? Meg 275

It was really obvious to me that the bonus 'graphic novel' wasn't going to be of the type being sold in the shops for £10+.  That would surely have been a ridiculous move!  Surely!

What we did get was well worth the money I thought.  If the upcoming installments are half as good as the Jock collection I'll be a happy chap, even though the first four-parter was obviously a 'rush job'.

I've only seen his work in the Case Files Collections, not being a 2000AD reader from way back when.  His stuff is obviously quality but because the standard of art in those books is so incredibly high his work doesn't necessarily stand out.  And some of his faces look a bit weird.

Great Prog!  The highlight for me at the mo has got to be ABC Warriors, I can't get enough of the stunning art and Pat Mill's scripts always put a (demented) smile on my face.

I thought I'd hate Stalag 666 when I found out it was a 'Great Escape in the future' type premise but guess what?  I'm really enjoying it!  It's a nice simple story that's not trying to be too clever and that's gold for a thicko like me!

Always enjoy Lobster Random but I'm having a hard time figuring out what's going on so far.  Same with the Red Seas.  But like I said I am a thicko :?

Quote from: "Krombasher"Defoe is appropriately B&W but with the right colourist on the job, because the inkwork is SO deftly done and I reckon an American market would lap it up. So would I with all the american trimmings.

Red Seas too. It can be done. But it can be done very badly or spot on. There is no third way I think.

That's very true I think.  And probably a good reason to leave some strips b&w / grayscale only.

Film & TV / Re: BATMAN: THE DARK KNIGHT NO SPOILERS
15 August, 2008, 08:38:32 PM
Quote from: "garageman"Sometimes I think that the more realistic they try and make characters like Batman in film, the less believable they become.  There were a couple of times watching the Dark Knight were I had to hold back from laughing at the ridiculousness of Batman, dressed in a huge lump of moulded rubber having a three way conversation with ordinary Joe's Dent and Gordon on the roof of Police HQ, and then he vanishes without of sound, absolutely comical.

Yes, that's the crux of the problem with this film and BB, the ultra-realism just doesn't work.

One of the strengths of the Tim Burton films is they were pure theatre, you weren't being asked to consider Batman as a possibility in the real world, as I believe the new films do.  I'm not suggesting TDK should have been as stylised and gothic as the original Batman but less of a po-faced approach could have helped (not to mention removing some of the more pointless/ridiculous plot elements, but this post would become as long as my arm if I went down that road).

Prog / Re: PROG 1599 - Blind Rage

Didn't like Dredd's reactions in this Prog much either TBO.
He's suffered a lot worse and kept his cool
so it just didn't ring true.  Very good story otherwise.

Not a massive Dante fan usually but the last three pages of Amerika were just stunning, I don't think any other artist could have done a better job.  Easily the highlight of 2008 so far.

Hated the Twisted Tale, couldn't follow what was going on at all - surely the kiss of death for a silent strip.

Sorry Bob.

Quote from: "SamuelAWilkinson"Film was great, though - I preferred it over Begins, I think, because it didn't make me leave the cinema questioning quite so many ridiculous plot points.

Not quite sure how you managed to do that cos my head was swimming with them by the end credits.

Have to agree with the first poster, in a word - disappointing.  Not Spider-Man 3 disappointing granted, just a slightly underwhelming, unsatisfied feeling after the end.

The actors were mostly spot on and Heath Ledger was every bit as good as the hype would lead you to believe, but in true modern superhero movie style the plot is an overly-complicated, convoluted affair and just not remotely believable.  I think if you liked Batman Begins you'll like this one, if you didn't, the same gripes you had about that film apply equally here.

Other Reviews / Re: Bob's Twisted Tale this week...

Didn't understand it either and lost interest one and half pages in.  Agree with the comment made earlier that if a comic requires an elaborate explanation it just don't work.

File under 'slipped through the net' methinks.
