Prog / Re: Hi Ex for Sin & Dex?
13 March, 2003, 05:42:22 AM
Oh no. He's started a Sin/Dex argument...

I used to like them, now I loathe them but lots of people still like them.

Id like to say I dont want to get involved in this, but well what the hell.  I agree.

They jumped the shark a while ago.  Once you are beyond the poor gags and a couple of puns, what do we have?

There is little character to either of the pair.   Ones like a stereotypical oirish bloke and ones a spaniard whose black, erm thats it.  We have a large number of secondary characters, billi, steampunk willie, teh ex cop who owns the bar (oops Im forgetting their names) but none of them have any impact on the story or impose their characters or names even on the strip.

Conversly I see why Sin Dex would be a popular jump in for a new reader, no continuity or history to wade through.  Just a straight forward simple strip.  The problem is it seems to be on the recycle button.......

The strip in the meg wasnt too bad, well not awful.  Its just a joke stretched out.

I just personally think the strip needs a rest for a whole six months and then brought back.  Still on the plus side we do get to see seome great art

You can see why Millar has such great success writing super hero comics, not such a bad thing and well it pays well.

Inferno, IIRC, had a great lead up, but then we had an indestructible bad guy that Dredd beats up.  Oh and in Book of the Dead, we had an indestructable Mummy that, yes Dredd beats up.  I think you get the idea.  I dont think Ive read either since they came out in the prog.

Im not bashing Millar, he Ennis and to some extent Morrison served their apprentiship here at 2000ad before going on to do some great stuff.  Its nice that Ennis at least is trying to stay in contact somewhat with his roots, we'll probably never see Morrison or Millar again in the pages of 2000ad.......

Ach well that often happens to me.  The amount of times I posyt meaning to say one thing and then when you reread it about an hour later, it completely obvious why its misconstrued.  Probably why Ill never be a writer :-)

Back onto ennis, liked preacher and liked his hellblazer (which Im starting to read).  His dredd isnt quite right, but I think this is an improvement and lets be honest we cant ask for more than that.

Ill add my own thought own this.

I dont see anyone saying that Ennis is a bad writer, just that his dredd is not quite right.

If we are all honest here, Wagner is the only person who gets it right consistently.  Why?!  because its his character.  Rennie for me comes a close second and I think he admits it himself, Dredd has always been his favourite charcter and perhaps in his case he has a style that suits dredd.

Having said that I like his take on dredd and I already want to read the next part.  I want to see where it goes before dismissing the story.

On the Subject of the West Wall, could it be an artists mistake?  Not the scripter?  Just a thought?!

OK my ten pence

The cover was OK but not great and not too eye catching.

Dredd - Look I know not much has happened in the last, oooh 5 or so episodes, but I really like this and the introduction of the mechanismo makes sense.  I suppose the trouble is that this is running in american format at the same time and thus we get a big cliffhanger every four progs.  And this Id say is a minor gripe.

VC's - I want big battles and killing aliens.  I cant help but feel that some of the momentum from the last series has now been lost to me and I feel harldy any empathy with the characters now.   Foreboding prescence of elder races?!?  Thats not Star Trek, thats babylon 5 that is....

Telguuth  - I look on these like I look on future shocks, throwaway fantasy.  But I think a few more longer stories would certianly fit the bill.

Atavar - Now, I think Im liking this.  But I have a nagging feeling that Im gonna hate it.  Im just not sure why.

Calaballistics - A little gem by Mr Rennie, the first series was a nice intro, this is building on it.  Its set up like an style 2000ad story, characters introduced, upheaval, more revealed.  Its like a jigsaw puzzle coming together.

Overall a much better prog.

Well my take,

Dredd -  Sure its full of holes, but it should be interesting.  Ennis deserves a break on his dredds, at themoment Im willing to give him one.

Juliet Novemeber - I hadnt liked this at all, but the end sure was a shock.

Family - Well its like the Soprano's on acid. It seems to have an older focus than many of the stories we have seen, but my one complaint!  The story is not clear, whether thats deliberate (by the normally outstanding Simon Fraser) or due to the sc ripting Im not sure.  Other wise very good, and it is becoming better asd the story progresses.

Bad karma - this has taken a swing now, wetheer that swing is good or bad Im not sure.  Lets hope we are not in for a mills rant.

Reprints - both are great.

Waugh - good story and some very nice touches int it.  And well the Art is superb.

TPO - astounding as usual.

Oh Im so glad Im not the only one who finds F1 really dull.  A real race would give the best drivers the worse cars.......  And Coulthard looks like Peter Perfect, so when to we see Dick Dastardly?
