(2). The Nazgul are making their disembodied way back to Minas Morgul, sans horses following Elrond's and Gandalf's (NOT Arwen's, not that I mind) little water stunt, so they shouldn't be much of an obstacle.

I always thought it was Glorfindel, not gandalf and not Arwen.  But as its 10 years since I read them Im not bothered about being wrong.  Either way its not a large difference in plot.
 
Personally I agree with you.  It either works as a story or it doesnt.  Pulling it apart looking for Nazi conertations, little englander stuff, etc.

I think they used them to travel quickly, but prefer horses.  When they are all wiped out in Riven dell ford they have to come back quickly.  You cant really ride that distance so they use a flying thing.  I think.....

OK how about this.

After capturing Golum the Dark Lord is on the lookout for little people travelling in strange places.  Id say 4 feckers on the back of eagles is pretty obvious when you have spies on the lookout.  Also they wouldnt last 5 mins against one of those winged nazgul things.  So sneaking on land is probably the best way to do it.   It does have some internal logic
