I'm interested to learn that Nelson Mandela was 'the agent of gradualist change'. I thought 15 years ago it was a Conservative article of faith that Mandela and the ANC were a bunch of terrorists. How times have changed.

They do and so did Mandela*.  He was a terrorist to some and a freedom fighter to others, this is a part of the problem with terrorism and something I think Pat Mills is trying to explore in Savage.  Whilst Im certainly not saying that he was a terrorist, I seem to remember that Burning Neckties was a technique used by the ANC (or Freedom Fighters in South Africa).

The claim of double standards is a fruitless one, most people and organisation have double standards.  Its part of what makes us human.  Id say this thread is close to turning into a personal attack on Will.  Not that I share his politics, but lets be careful that we dont
a) bore the pants off of everyone
b) write long winded posts that dont change anyones mind **.

* - I collected for the ANC in my youth and hlped organise a number of events at school and uni to do with the Free Mandela Campaign.  So he is something of an idol of mine, but lets not make him a saint
** - Like Ive just done :)

This was the main reason for my wife and I getting married.  Inheritance, control over sick partner, etc.  Now unless theyve changed the law over the last 5 or 6 years, the problem was not what my wife was entitled to.  As we were cohabiting and she was the mother of my child (at the time) she was fully entitled to a part of my income (rightly so), however the converse isnt true.  I wasnt at that point entitled to hers, unless we got married.  At that time she was earning more than double I was and we thought it was best to equalise this.  So we had a civil wedding.  Im probably rabbling....

Now if I was gay Id want the same rights, with my partner and I tihink that should be given.

On tatchell, Ive never liked him.  However, I dont like many people in the public eye.  Theyre all mostly self serving attention seekers.....

I think its systematic of this country,we look for heroes to build up then spend time bringing them down.  Of course if they die when we are bringing them down, well they become untouchable.  The tabloid press has so much to answer for they just make me really angry.....

I knew he was a liverpool fan and I think Robs about the same age as me.  Kenny Dalgliesh was my first hero (and I can never spell his name correctly).  Im trying to think of someone more famous than him or keegan from that time.....  I cant in all honesty.

Pele, Maradonna, Cryuff, Beckenbaur?
