General / Hammer Book- Gordon R

Really for Gordon-
Just going through my pile of 'current things'- and at the bottom is a copy of the Hammer Story by Alan Barnes that I dug out a couple of months ago because Gordon mentioned he might need a copy- do you still need one? Or if anyone else fancies it, I've got all the visual ref I need from it, so drop a reply and you can have it for a song

Only ask because otherwise it'll go back in the shelf!

Ah, I hadn't thought of the Comic Relief Comic- bonus points for you, Wake!

The actual link I was thinking of was the two centre-spread pieces Hampson produced for the Spiderman comic in 1976... the first one depicted Spiderman, The Thing and the Hulk foiling an alien invasion of London, while the second (entitled 'Counter Attack!') depicted the aliens being pursued into orbit by a British Task Force. The main figure is plainly Dan (with the addition of a full moustache, and he's  named as Sgt SuperDare in the accompanying blurb.

The second illo is reproduced in full in 'The Man Who Drew Tomorrow', pgs 176-7

Tenuous, I know- but a link all the same!

I know I didn't win, so might be out of order asking a new one, but....

How to get from Dan Dare (Hampson's original) to Spiderman in a single move?

Wake'll get it in a trice, mind you

If anyone fancies reading up on Wertham, the Code and plenty of fun EC shenanigans, you could do a lot worse than checking out 'A Haunt of Fears' by Martin Barker (Pluto Press, 1984)
It may well be the one you mentioned Frazer, if it was reprinted by Fantagraphics... either way, well worth a gander if you can track it down on Ebay

I tell you, I can well relate to it all! Had to sell a bunch of my beloved Hawk Dan Dare reprints recently to stave of a frenzied assault by the bank manager. Gutted, I can tell you.

The only consolation was that at the price they're fetching now (and the fact they went to private buyers, not regular sellers) I knew they'd end up somewhere they'd be as loved as they had been with me.

It's a bloody small consolation, mind! :(

Off Topic / Flash Game

Hey Folks- I need your help!

I've just finished (at least, nearly finished) my first Flash platform game, which I've put up online at my new site www.adamtwycross.co.uk

The main character, Joe Barbarian, owes a lot in look to a certain Celtic Barbarian who you're all familiar with, and his name is a little homage to Pat Mill's and John Wagner's propensity to call their heroes Joe.

Anyhow, as I say, I've just finished it, and am in the process of ironing out a few glitches in the programming- if any of you feel like helping me out, head over to the site and tell me how it is to play... I particularly need to know if the download time is okay, make sure it doesn't play slow on your computers and that kind of thing.

Cheers folks!

Agreed, Oddboy- a damn classic! And about time it was out again... how long is it since the original GN was published? 10 years is it? I'll be getting myself a copy as soon as the bank manager lets me (blast his eyes!)

The Taxidermist- it's got everything you could ever want from a Dredd strip, I reckon

Are they available in the UK, Mangamax? If so, I'll have to get my hands on some! Any idea who the publisher is?

Actually, now I come to think of it, if you've never tracked down a copy of Heavy Metal, that'd probably be a good move, too, Kertap.

All sorts of good stuff in there. Pat Mills' recent 'Requiem' (originally for the French market) was in there, for example.

Much more akin to 2000AD than Corto Maltese, obviously

You might want to try some of Hugo Pratt's Corto Maltese strips, which have been published in this country by The Harvill Press (although they may or may not still be in print- I got my copies a couple of years back now....)

If you haven't read any Corto Maltese stuff, they're well worth a read, although they're not very '2000AD' in their style (but it's always good to open up new horizons) :)

Anything that's good enough to get name-checked in The Dark Knight Returns has to be worth a read, right?
