Off Topic / Meeting Gerry Anderson

On a freezing Saturday at Manchester's Fab Cafe, my housemate and I listened to a talk from the creator of Thunderbirds, Fireball XL5 and ... um ... Space 1999 (NOT a talk from the leader of the Irish republican Sinn Fein party, as I had to explain almost every single time I mentioned it to someone ...)

And I must say - what a thoroughly enjoyable day!

He's quite caustic and you can tell he doesn't have much patience, but on the whole the anecdotes he came out with were very revealing and actually quite amusing. He talked about the forthcoming completely CGI version of Captain Scarlet - revealing that although the main characters will remain the same in terms of personality and role, everything else will pretty much change. He said he's seen the current work and reckons it'll be a big hit.

You had the usual geek fanboys there who corrected him on one or two points (to which his response was "Oh shut up!") but ther best thing was that there were blokes there with their young kids, who were just as big fans as their fathers.

On the whole, a top afternoon's entertainment and - for someone who's only ever been a passing fan of the era of Supermatiovision - an enlightening talk by a fascinating man.

I got to shake his hand and thanked him for a great talk - lovely guy.

Top anecdote: "I remember when I was invited to come to the opening of the Fab Cafe here and thinking "They've got a bloody cheek, nicking FAB from Thunderbirds" but they actually turned out to be quite nice..."

(He did look very, very tired though and you had to strain to hear his voice, even with the microphone on full. He said he'd come to Manchester despite being "desperately busy and desperately tired". I have a worrying suspicion that it may not be long before a certain someone makes his way to the great Tracey Island in the sky ... )http://home.clara.net/digger/sixties/anderson.jpg">

Rather disturbingly, we received this press release at work today ...

One Ring to Rule Them All...
Barbie and Ken star as Arwen and Aragorn

As the UK prepares for a Lord of the Rings frenzy Barbie and Ken are bringing the magic of Tolkein's timeless classic to life as Arwen and Aragorn.  Their launch coincides with the pending release of the Two Towers collectors' edition DVD, the film exhibition at London's Science Museum and most importantly the imminent opening of the final movie in this epic
trilogy, The Return of the King.

These exquisitely detailed collectible dolls are released this winter to celebrate the Lord of the Rings trilogy and its phenomenal universal impact.

Barbie as Arwen the elvish princess looks serenely beautiful with porcelain coloured skin.  She wears a wonderful pale green medieval inspired velvet gown with silver trim on the bodice.  The dress features long open sleeves characteristic of the period, which are lined in white chiffon. Her ethereal elegance is completed with a beaded butterfly-patterned headdress.

Ken is handsome and regal as the dashing heartthrob King Aragorn, wearing an elaborate costume featuring a rich black velvet cloak and gold and black body armour. His outfit is finished with a crown and sword.   He is ready to face battle and bring stability back to Middle Earth!

Help! / I'm an uncle! Get me out of here!!!!!

Jacob Peter Burden.

Here's us waiting for nine months and two weeks and he finally arrives at 2.15 this morning after keeping his mother in labour for 36 hours. Weighing in at a respectable seven pounds and nine ounces, the little blighter refused to cry and instead stared at everyone as if they were mad. He has dark hair, a permanent expression of surprise and long, spindly legs ... just like his uncle!

Welcome little one! You've come a long way but the best bit of the journey is only just beginning ...

The world is so full of bad news these days (believe me, I'm a journalist ... most of it is my fault) that sometimes it's nice to give a little praise to those amongst who, without thought for themselves, are just genuinely nice folks.

I've already mentioned Ken Sutherland (for giving me a nice press pass for London) but I'm sure there are plenty more ...

But, my fellow boarders, who else is deserving of the title 'Top fella'?

Okay, just finished the above-named Philip K Dick book and must say I enjoyed it immensely.

However ...

I am at a loss as to the ending of the book. It's all excellently written and I was thoroughly enjoying it but then it just ... stopped. I fear I've missed something vital and not 'got' the ending, but even for a PKD novel it seems to have a remarkably obtuse ending. I see a lot of themes spread throughout the book, but none of them seem to be central enough to be THE theme. This doesn't normally happen when I read a book and I've 'got' even the most confusing conclusions in some pretty complex books, but this left me flumuxed ...

I am, undoubtedly, missing the point ...

Can anyone shed any light on this great, though confusing, book?

Cheers

Help! / Help a poor reporter in need, guv'nor?
29 September, 2003, 06:28:28 PM
Well, the 2000AD travelling exhibition has rolled into the sleepy town of Harrogate and what a stir it's making! Mercer Art Gallery bod, Janine, confirms that more adults have been through the doors than kids. Front page of local paper's review section devoted to pic of fool dressed as Dredd, last seen walking along the sedate streets of this upper crust Northern outpost of Southern snobbishness (apologies to all our Southern basta ... er ... readers)

Anyway, as part of the events being held to mark the exhibition, a Dennis the Menace artist called (I think) Paul Palmer (that may be grossly wrong but I'm pretty sure his last name was Palmer) is visiting to talk to local school kids. Yours truly being the local paper's only comics-fixated reporter, I have the merry job of interviewing him when he arrives ...

Now, I'm afraid that I went straight from reading Transformers to reading Tooth, so I've never even owned a copy of the Beano.

So, any particular questions/snippets of info about his career/infor I can use to sound knowledgable would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and I get to interview our very own Kev Sutherland as well! Fancy that!
