Help! / Computery link-up problemeroonie!
30 July, 2005, 04:53:05 PM
I recently acquired a laptop computer so that I can now work AND watch TV at the same time ;-)

On my main PC I have a completely legit copy of CorelDraw 9 which I use for designing pages for The End is Nigh. However, I've searched high a low for the disk to put it onto my laptop and I just can't find it.

Is there any way I can link my laptop to my PC with, say, a USB lead and transfer the programme? My PC does have a network card but I'm not sure my laptop has.

Ex-Doctor Who companion Sarah Jane Smith will return in the new series of the sci-fi show, it was revealed as the Doctor's new costume was unveiled.
Popular 1970s character Sarah Jane, played by Elisabeth Sladen, will join new Doctor Who actor David Tennant.

However Rose, played by Billie Piper, will remain the Doctor's full-time companion throughout the new series.

The Doctor's "striking" new outfit consists of a striped suit, trenchcoat and trainers.

Woohoo!

Off Topic / Beagle Two creator diagnosed with MS
20 July, 2005, 05:18:58 PM
A nasty thing to happen to anyone, but this flagged itself up to me because I greatly admire Colin Pillinger. Beagle Two may have failed, but he's been one of the most high profile figure in the tiny UK space effort and has real passion for space travel. I'd like to think that he emboies the spirit that Alan Barnes was talking about in the Meg a few weeks ago ...

Film & TV / Spoilers: Tarantino's CSI
20 July, 2005, 03:16:23 PM
All I can say is: WOW!

First episode was all set-up but the second certainly delivered! George Eadsn a bloody fantastic performance and certainly kept the drama going. Tranatino's prints were all over the script (ho ho) with some of that great conversational dialogue that he does so well. Cameo by Tony Bennett which was a nice touch. Tonnes of twists. Lovely direction. Real nice departure from the usual CSI plotting and we learnt more about the characters than ever before.

Only bum note: the random black and white 'dream' sequence towards the end which just drained a lot of the tension away, right before the very end.

But overall: WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW!

Books & Comics / The weird world of Warren Ellis
17 July, 2005, 07:12:35 PM
Popped into OK Comics yesterday to pick up the cash for the many, many issues of The End is Nigh that they've sold, but made the terrible mistake of then browsing the shelves and spending nearly all of it in a Warren Ellis-related binge.

Due to Mr Ed Berridge's amazing generosity, I had all but two issues of Mr Ellis' Ocean series, so picked them up, and - since the net's been going nutty about the pilot TV adaptation that has been cancelled - I also got the TPB of Global Frequency. I already have the first Transmetropolitan and also secured a copy of the hardback Ministry of Space trade while in New York.

I also read his blog a lot. And I kinda like the guy.

His stuff seems to oscillate wildly between fucking brilliant and slightly clich?d. While MoS is easily one of the best things ever written (and drawn), Global Frequency is a bit dull, slightly repetitive and without the rich background detail that his other series have. Also, it reads like he wanted to write a screenplay, rather than a comic book, which pisses me off slightly.

However, Ocean is just brilliant and an excellent practical application of some of the theories Arthur C Clarke describes in the sequels to 2001: A Space Oddesey such as the oceans under Europa etc. The plotting, pace and characterisation are all excellent and while it would also make a great film, it is first and foremost written like a comic book.

I'm not going to over-analyse the guy's work, but I think he's a fantastic writer who, although he's produced some great classics, has yet to hit his proper stride. Oh, and I'm sure he'd rather be writing films ;-)

I was interested in what other people thought of him ...

Off Topic / Paypal: which way to go?
06 June, 2005, 05:53:44 AM
Hey, I'm looking to set up a Paypal account so people can buy End is Nigh online, but not sure which account to go with. The basic personal account doesn't take credit card payments, so that's useless. But then there's the Premier and Business accounts - the only difference I can see from my perspective is that with the business one I could have 'The End is Nigh' appear on people's statements when they buy one. I was going to go for that, but am worried it will charge more and I can't for the life of me figure out the financial gubbins they have on their site.

A little help?!?!

Anyone who doesn't want to go through the lengthy process of getting me to post them a copy of The End is Nigh, you can now pick them up from all three major comics shops in Leeds: OK Comics on Thorntons Arcade, Comicville in the Merrion Centre and now Travelling Man in the Corn Exchange! And, so I understand, there's one or two copies are still available at Travelling Man in Bristol ...

That is all

News / Dredd Eagle reprints cheap at The Works
04 June, 2005, 10:52:52 PM
Just to let you know that The Works chain of book shops are currently doing a three old/reprinted comics for ?1 deal. Among all the copies of Rob Leifield's Brigade (there seemed to be an awful lot of those still on the shelves, can't imagine why) there were about four of the US-sized Dredd reprint mags. Cheapo!
