Thanks all. Probably preaching to the converted.. however..

The way I see it- comic book artwork, graffiti and tattoos have generally found themselves huddled under the same counter-cultural umbrella here in the UK.

Me, I'll champion most things if they're done well and with the proper intent.

And Bou, if you ever get the chance to take your royal family on holiday, take them to Barcelona- the graff is a toda hostia (full on)  and you can always pick up a formidable tattoo, you'll find most Catalans also take pride in their Celtic roots too.

Cheers Cap^n C..

Appreciation of art is such a subjective thing.

The other day, as part of a council / university sponsored initiative 'Up Your Street'  I'd been invited to paint a legal piece with an Alice In Wonderland theme outside a local second-hand record shop.

Just moments into starting the work a local resident -an artist *and* lecturer at the university no less- came out of her house and started spouting off about how this graffiti was going to seriously compromise the sale value of her house.

The fact that in the 25 yrs she has lived in the street there had been some form of mural art on the wall until very recently had nothing to do with it- it was graffiti and 'simply wouldn't do'.

I tried to have a level-headed discussion with her about the difference between the hastily scrawled obscenities that were already there and the composition I had planned but she refused, choosing instead to shower me with veiled insults, demands for contact numbers and threats of arrest.

Eventually it was agreed, after half the neighborhood wardens in the area came down to intervene that if ANY of the local residents STILL objected to the artwork after it's completion the wall would be white-washed.

I finished it last week- not a fucking peep out of anyone.

In fact there has been nothing but praise heaped upon the 'Up Your Street' project since then with compliments coming from everyone living and working in the area from local kids who are into the graffiti scene to the police.

If it seems like I've taken this thread off-topic *just* a bit what I'm trying to say is that artworks shouldn't have to be confined to conventionally prescribed gallery spaces or coffee table catalogues as some people would have you believe. Comic books, urban spaces and yes, the human body can, IMHO all be valid forums for expression and creativity.

BTW I have a black spot in the palm of my right hand -that could now easily be mistaken for a fleck of paint- the result of an incident with childhood friends and (heh) a ball point pen, in it's own way a reminder of some 'right of passage' and at the time of writing this- the only 'tattoo' I'll ever have.

Within the counter culture of Graffiti Writing I have friends and acquaintances that are covered from head to foot in multicoloured artwork of a technical quality I'd be hard pushed to produce with a pen, spraycan or Mac program.

For them it is an extension of their *need* (not to be confused with *want*) to 'get up'.

'Getting up' is a term frequently used to describe the act of painting pieces in all the places we travel to, which for the most part are inner city brown field sites yet to be redeveloped or disused industrial areas found at the edge of the 'burbs generally known as 'halls of fame'.

Because of the of the transient, ephemeral nature of modern graffiti most works (not the visual white-noise of tagging) are immensely intricate and time consuming affairs that only exist for a few days / weeks / months before being 'buffed' (removed) or written over by other writers (artists).

In direct contrast the tattoo has become a platform for writers to 'get up' / wear their work and the work of others with a permanency only dreamt of before.

One friend in particular has travelled across Europe and the US carefully coordinating his own paint productions with appointments with some of the most talented tattoo artists practicing now.

In this context I can understand the desire to mark oneself out as physically, spiritually and/or creatively unique and be part of a particular social grouping at the same time- in much the same way as Bou's references to the tribal woad of two thousand years ago.

However I also have to agree with Paul here when reading "A tattoo to me indicates a level of belief or obsession that is *potentially* disturbing..." I'm reminded of the times that by painting in derelict urban spaces we would run the risk of arrest or a mugging at needle point by some scag-head for our art. Hardly the actions of a rational person ;)

Haven't got any flicks of amazing graffiti inspired tattoos but here's a piece I painted last year..
