At Bristol I had quite an informative conversation with Simon Parr, designer at the Nerve Centre about case files and the like which corroborates Jon Oliver's earlier statement.
We actually spent most of the time talking about how refreshingly different the cover layouts are in comparison to other TPB collections from other publishers and how choices are made about what artwork and spot colours are used for each volume.
I also finally got to find out which artist gets to grace the cover of JDCCF vol 8 ;)
IIRC Simon also mentioned that at one point they had considered the idea of a black on black design using a gloss spot varnish to demarcate image and text rather than a single colour. IMHumbleO an intriguing proposal, however whether it's deemed a practical design solution in terms courting attention through point-of-sale etc and for which character/series it's used remains to be seen.
As British graphic design legend Abram Games once put it: "maximum meaning, minimum means"
