Messages - Bart Oliver

#256
At Bristol I had quite an informative conversation with Simon Parr, designer at the Nerve Centre about case files and the like which corroborates Jon Oliver's earlier statement.

We actually spent most of the time talking about how refreshingly different the cover layouts are in comparison to other TPB collections from other publishers and how choices are made about what artwork and spot colours are used for each volume.

I also finally got to find out which artist gets to grace the cover of JDCCF vol 8 ;)

IIRC Simon also mentioned that at one point they had considered the idea of a black on black design using a gloss spot varnish to demarcate image and text rather than a single colour. IMHumbleO an intriguing proposal, however whether it's deemed a practical design solution in terms courting attention through point-of-sale etc and for which character/series it's used remains to be seen.

As British graphic design legend Abram Games once put it: "maximum meaning, minimum means"

Great stuff.

The idea that certain senior Scientologists believe they are hosts to the spiritual entities of long dead extraterrestrial entities is old news- disturbing and laughable in equal measures.

To lay blame at the feet of psychologists, attributing the practice of psychology as sole cause for the Jewish Holocaust just beggars belief.

If I'd been trailed by and constantly heckled by the shining example of human mediocrity that is Tommy Archer I'd of done more than get a bit shouty with him- just as well I'm not an investigative journalist working for the BBC.

Big MEH.

Body clock has finally re-calibrated itself.

Best Bristol ever? I can't possibly speak for anyone else there but it certainly was eventful.

Again, a pleasure to catch up with fellow boarders old and new, droids and other industry creatives I'd met (if only briefly) last year.

Congratulations to Al and Rufus on their respective new commissions.

Thanks to Rufus for lining me up with a page from Gary Leach's stash of Colin Wilson Mega Rackets Dredd and Boo for making such an insanely detailed page of Harry Kipling so affordable. Cheers!

Finally special thanks go to Lady Killer Longman Short for making the perilous drive to and from Bristol through Biblical torrents on practically *zero* hours sleep. You absolute hero.

Still a member of the Slightly Pink Branch- A combination of Mary's apricot scrub and cleansing wipes have managed to remove most of the lipstick but not enough to stop students asking me what had happened to my arm yesterday ;p

Happy Birthday Mike.

No apology necessary ;)

I followed your link to the site the other day- we're impressed enough with the service to the point where we're going to get the students to compile a year book of their work October/ November time.

(For obvious reasons) really looking forward to seeing this in print too.

Great cover by Mike D, pleased to see he's maintained the OVS helmet motif from the previous two.

Still, can't spy Quisling..

BTW Paul, are you looking to make all three available via LULU later this year?

Cheers, Ol

Thought hadn't crossed my mind Robin, but yes it could be Sam.

The ref photo I was working from was a tiny thumbnail from some fan film site.

I hoped the eagle cap badge (not part of Carlos' vision) would help viewers identify him better.

Admittedly my intended likeness to an elderly James Coburn /Major Easy is a bit vague ;) but thanks PJ.

I've been trying to cut down on the number of hours I spend staring at a monitor by get into the habit of drawing (and colouring) with more traditional media and relying a little less on Photoshop and Painter post pencils.

Gotta scan my Belardinelli tribute sketch this week.

Even if it's noncommissioned small press material, Nick Dyer's artwork has made it into the pages of the Meg.

I remember meeting him last year at Bristol and seeing his original pages for the Rogue Trooper strip he did for Zarjaz and thinking for someone with such obvious talent he was criminally modest about his work.

It's about time he's got the exposure to wider audience he deserves.
