Nevermind if I think Kevin Spacey *is* Nite Owl etc.. all this idle speculation will amount to nothing because Tordelbach is essentially right on all counts.

Why Hollywood movie production companies to feel it necessary to throw good money after bad in the pursuit of making sometimes feeble and grossly inaccurate film renditions of our favourite comic book protagonists does annoy me.

The argument about bringing them to a wider audience in light of Judge Dredd, LOXG and countless others is a poor one.

To swell their already immense collective bank balances IMHO is to miss the point, instead why not inject some cash back into the comics industry?

Bring back some of the talent that has been lured away by other mediums of entertainment and elevate the quality and generally perceived status of reading, collecting and making comic books to something better than -and I paraphrase an acquaintance here- a closet pastime for anoraks.

I shall now have my soapbox broken up for firewood and sod off to make the dinner.

++ Dave Gibbons for Dr Manhattan!! ++

I agree that Dr. Manhattan should be CGI.. also think Odds is right.. they should get Gibbons to develop the character Design.

++ The MAtrix - The most incredibe thing I'd seen at the time ++

So easy to forget the shear brilliance of this film in light of the remainder of the trilogy and the subsequent use of bullet-time in everything from computer games to cereal commercials.

I went to see it thrice within the first month of it's release. So yeah, it was THE film at that moment.

When I found the site for Battle Beyond the Stars looking for an image of Nell, the neurotic spaceship with tits I actually found myself getting quite nostalgic about it even though as a nine year old I was sorely disapointed with the film.

So I'll retact my wish to forget it completely.

As for Requiem For A Dream- nope, still can't bring myself to say anything constructive about it ;)

++ Why don't we all just agree to hate the works of Dolph Lundgren, Jean-Claude VanDamme and Lou Diamond Phillips and have done with it? ++

Gets my vote.. Universal Soldier doublely so.

Requiem for a Dream.

Agreed. Got up and walked away from that one halfway through.

Even though Space Cowboy (George Peppard) had a belt that dispensed scotch, water, and ice.

It *still* has to be Battle Beyond the Stars.

Purhaps not *ultra* obscure and taking this thread further away from Gary's original post.

But  does anyone remember some cartoon shorts screened late night years ago where childlike drawing on foolscape paper was animated to segments of original film soundtrack?

IIRC there were scenes from On The Waterfront and Empire Strikes Back.

To the uninitiated ear (not directed at you in particular or meaning to sound patronising in any way)  alot of fringe electronic material can first appear to be incoherent 'mind-bending stuff'.

I find that I have to be in the right frame of mind to listen to Team Doyobi- usually mid morning.

My taste for electronic music has become progressively more eclectic over the past few years so when I play or recommend music to people sometimes it doesn't elicit the response I was hoping for ;)

Imagine eating a Fahl (hotter than a Vindaloo) if you've never had a curry before.

Other artists / albums worth a listen are Squarepusher: Feed Me Weird Things, most recordings by Autechre & the super-chilled Boards of Canada: Music Has The Right To Children.

Before I hit the hay I'd like to recommend Team Doyobi: Choose Your Own Adventure only because it's something I've been getting to grips with over the past few months and 'am enjoying more and more.

Be warned, a bit of an acquired taste- but one worth persevering with if you like your electronica written with what sounds like malfunctioning 8-bit computers playing martial arts game soundtracks..

And yes, the duo's logotype is a homage to the ELITE cover design.
