Right, my school got OFSTEDed this week so I've missed the board for a whole week. What happened while I was away? I expect very silly/libellous answers please including movie news, Scojo and something about cheese.

Mick did some ace Star Scans too. I loved his 'Things to look forward to...' series...

Oh dear! I've just killed Mick Austin! I put one of his covers on this weeks' post and said it was by the 'much missed' Mick Austin, meaning I miss his work from the comic. Someone called Vollisticks wrote the following comment "What, Mick Austin's dead?!? Fuck no!!! he was the cover artist of the very first 2000ad I ever bought! A Dredd head shot, think it was mid-500's, 540-odd, maybe? I should dig it out, now..."

Ooooops!

Prog / Re: Prog 1765: Marry a Monster!

Yeah the one we got on Christmas Eve was last weeks prog!

It's another brilliant reason to be a subscriber. For the last couple of years we've got the end of year prog, followed by the next one two weeks later, then the next one two weeks after that. Much nicer than waiting four weeks between thrills! Good old Tharg!

With regards to the cover, the Lichtenstein idea came late. Considering the subject matter, I too would have loved to have seen a full on pop art attempt. The fact that it wasn't initially a Lichtenstein makes me wonder why Jena was wearing a purple wedding dress!?!

As for the prog itself, the line up is incredibly strong at the moment isn't it?

The build up in Dredd is almost unbearable, with fantastic Wagnerian humour weaved skill fully in the mix. Henry's art is just beautiful too. Wagner's scripts are so dense these days it seems to take ages to read an episode, glorious!

I'm loving Grey Area too. The world is fantastically evolved already and Karl Richardson's art is nothing short of spectacular.

The same goes for Absalom. Tiernen's art just blows me away, his Spring Heeled Jack was terrific and that last panel a joy!

Dante ripped my heart out, yet again. I'm gagging to see what happens at the wedding, next time Dante squares up against Dmitri is going to be epic!

Finally Stronium Dog is the icing on a very satisfying comicy cake!

All hail Tharg!

Stevey Owl's Lichtenstein-tastic cover is on my blog. As someone said on the Prog thread, I'd also have loved to have seen even more of a pop art vibe on it too, but it appears that the idea came later in the cover's production (see my blog for details.) Bah, I'm still waiting for a Soviet Propaganda poster style Dante cover, come on Tharg/Si Fraser!

As well as Lichtenstein, I've also posted some other mainstream artist inspired covers. Can you think of any more?

Incredible!!! Cliff really is the king isn't he? As well as a brilliant image as a whole, I keep spotting cool little details like the severed ear hanging off the spear and the engraving on the knife. Some of those muties are brilliant too! You can see he's had lots of fun with this one!

Congratulations Vzzbux!

It's my 40th in October and my missus and family have already been told that I want a 'surprise' Cliff commission!

News / Re: 2000AD Cover of the Year - THE RESULT!
04 January, 2012, 08:28:54 PM
Thanks for all your thanks folks! It's an absolute pleasure to do but it does take a while I must say, especially with my mathematically challenged brain! Still, to be thanked by D'Israeli on his blog has made my day!

Here's what the other winners had to say to us:

Greg Staples: "Thats wonderful news, thank you!"

Cliff Robinson: "Hey, third place, that's terrific! You're right, that's good company I'm in there. I particularly liked Greg's wraparound cover. That's a beautiful painting. I keep meaning to email him to say 'cheers' for including my Judge Death pic. I got a kick out of seeing that and I should let him know."

Henry Flint: "That's great! that's the first time I've had one in the running let alone two. Many thanks!"

Liam Sharp: "Thanks buddy! Posted on Facebook!"

So there you are fellas, as well as letting the work know which covers you liked, you also made a bunch of great artists very happy!

News / 2000AD Cover of the Year - THE RESULT!
03 January, 2012, 08:11:11 AM
The results are in and have been checked and double checked by myself and then independently checked (and, of course, corrected) by Emperor himself who I'd like to send a million thanks to! Over 60 people took the time to vote so I'd like to say thanks to those for taking the time too.

Without further ado, in reverse order, the results are as follows, (Pete nervously opens envelope...)

Bubbling under we have these three beauties...

Shakara attacking an alien armada with a freaking planet by Henry Flint (Prog 1725), the excellent Anderson by Garry Brown (Prog 1734) and Flesh by James Mackay (Prog1729.) Great to see two artists being recognised who've made their début this year...

In fifth place we have the return of Liam Sharp with this amazing wraparound for Prog 1724...

And in fourth place, the always amazing Henry Flint with this action-packed Dredd classic for Prog 1763:

Third place was a tie between these two heavyweights...

Progs 1725 by the genius that's Henry Flint (again!) and prog 1738's astounding Brainbloom cover by Cliff Robinson.

Runner up is this modern classic by Greg Staples for Prog 1750:

And the winner, by an absolute landslide, is the bona fide genius that is D'Israeli with the beautiful Hokasi inspired Dirty Frank cover of Prog 1752! Congratulations to a worthy, worthy winner!

Congratulations to all!
