Terry Gilliam is a very versatile film-maker, and considering he was very serious about potentially directing a big-screen adaptation of Watchmen at one time, leads me to think he would be equally adept at a Judge Dredd movie- although he would undoubtedly inject a lot of his unique character into it- and it would have many of the typical Gilliam themes in it, like a dystopian society, authoritarianism, the little people squelched under an oppressive system... not to mention all kinds of crazy black humour, socio-political satire, and totally whacked-out visuals!

But that's all academic, ultimately, I'm just thrilled to have a new Dredd movie on it's way, and my best wishes and regards go to Pete Travis- who of us doesn't wish him the greatest success, not to mention wanting him to completely knock this one out of the park, anyone...?

I wholeheartedly concur with radiator's above post, I'm actually really excited about Dredd, everything I know about the movie so far, I like, and Joe Soap is also spot-on when comparing the overall look and tone of Dredd to the very first (banned) JD comic-book story, Bank Raid- in fact, if I'm not mistaken, Jock himself has actually compared the movie to the aforementioned story, high praise indeed!

Whilst totally onboard with the new movie's creative direction, I always thought that if they were going to attempt another JD movie, it should be directed by Terry Gilliam (who should have directed the first attempt, and even Sly Stallone apparently has said so), been a remarkably faithful adaptation of the source material (both in look and overall tone), and probably with Judge Death in it.  Had they shot it in somewhere like Prague, they could've made a truly representative JD movie now for about $80 million, which isn't bad for a big movie nowadays, and they probably would've had no problem getting the financing for it- even taking into consideration the probable 3-D element- but like I said, I'm totally behind the new movie as it is, JD fans should just thank the good Lord we're getting another JD movie... and this time, they mean business!!!

BLOODY HELL!!!  I go offline for twenty-four hours, come back and get immediatly hit with a possible teaser poster for Dredd- and I'm already FIVE pages behind on a new thread, you guys have been burning up the 'net the last few hours, damn!- when did this possible teaser poster hit the web!?  I'm gonna go out on a limb here, and say it's a fake, it just doesn't pass the smell taste, and I think Joe Soap is right, I wouldn't expect to see anything official until SDCC at least, and this autumn/fall at most, still, that first glimpse of the poster nearly gave me a heart attack...

I actually meant that I hoped Dredd would give the Donner Superman movie "a run for it's money" in terms of quality for a comic-book adaptation, not in terms of box-office, which, considering Dredd himself is a relatively obscure (outside the U.K. and Ireland) character, plus the fact that it's likely to be a very adult R-rated movie, it's pretty certain it won't make as much as Superman- even when adjusted for inflation.

In regards to the whole 'turning back time' paradox in the 1978 movie, I always thought that Supes turned back time to re-do his attempts to restore order following the nuclear missile-caused earthquake, he basically did everything again you saw him do first time, but because he knew what he did wrong the first time, he was able to do it right second time out- including making sure the fault line didn't reach Lois this time, which would explain why her car was never buried after Supes turned back time... phew, I hope that clears things up somewhat, I'm off for a lie down, my head hurts and I'm feeling a little dizzy, goodnight gracie...

After his visit to the set in Johannesburg earlier this year, John Wagner said the script had been given a lot of thought and effort, and he also clearly said that Alex Garland did rewrites during production, so there well could be some black humour in the movie, although the satire will mainly be a visual one, probably graffiti and shop-fronts.  I've read the script online (two or three times now-  :-[), and I think it's ace, a great start to build upon with subsequent installments, but I agree with Angry Vince, if John Wagner is happy with the overall direction so far, then I'm happy, although I think I read somewhere that DNA Films were not going to have shoulder pads on Dredd's uniform originally, so if it was Wagner's influence that kept the movie uniform so close to the comic-book, someone needs to buy the Wag' the largest drink they can next time they meet him...

C'mon, you think the Richard Donner 1978 movie is "cheesy to look at these days", REALLY?  I would still put it up there as THE definitive comic-book adaptation to date; thrilling, spectacular, funny, and genuinely touching, not to mention THAT theme tune, what more could you ask for (the only thing wrong with it is that Donner didn't return to complete Superman II)...!?  But the upcoming Dredd movie will hopefully give it a run for it's money (in a different way, of course, given the very different source material)...

However it turns out, it can't be much worse than Bryan Singer's snooze-fest Superman Returns, I mean, Singer said if he had to do it again, he'd just remake Donner's timeless 1978 movie... words fail me...

Spot on Radiator, dude, I was thinking exactly the same thing, but forgot to put it down until after I'd posted.  The trouble with everything you suggested in one single book is it would make it one hell of an unwieldy tome- and at one ungodly price too!  It would probably be better to split it into two volumes, either sold separately, or together in a nice 'limited edition' box set, with the first volume the 'making of' book with detailed history of the project, tons of lovely photos, and the complete shooting script, whilst the second would feature the comic-book adaptation, Jock's concept art designs (both used and unused ideas), storyboards, and maybe even a written commentary by Jock and the movie's production team throughout, explaining why certain designs were used and others discarded, and if that wasn't enough, maybe also a chapter discussing the different looks and interpretations of Dredd down the years by varous comic artists who worked on the comic-book.  I don't know, does that sound like too much, it's way better than silly action figures (however cool they may look on your shelf)...!?

I wholeheartedly agree, more Dredd talk- what does fellow forum dwellers think of any potential merchandise for the new film, like, should there be any?  Should they licence deluxe Dredd and Anderson action figures, with Lawmaster sold separately, or is it better not to whore out the first proper 2000 A.D. movie...?

Yeah, Hollywood does tend to b******ise good ideas, but the great thing about the new Dredd movie is it has NOTHING to do with big U.S. corporate studios- it's being made by an independent British production company using Indian money!  That was the whole root cause of the 1995 movie's downfall, the U.S. moneymen simply weren't prepared to sink $80million into a summer movie about a ruthless fascist (their loss), that and the guy who owned the movie rights to Dredd- Charles Lippincott- was absolutely determined from the outset to make a PG-13 family entertainment movie, and fatally altered Dredd's character to fit that agenda, look at how that one worked out!  The new Dredd movie is going to be a dark, serious, and extraordinarily violent R-rated (a definite '18' in the UK) bloodbath which will be a proper representation of the source material- and John Wagner says so, by drokk- rule Britannia indeed...

Man, that ABC Warrior robot model is amazing looking, Mardroid is spot-on, it was the very few things (alongside the Mega-City One skyline and Mean Machine Angel) the 1995 movie managed to get right.  Ironically, this actually might fit in even more with the new Dredd movies, gritty but still futuristic, and a completely photo-realistic CGI Hammerstein would be much better and more agile than the hulking animatronic used in the aforementioned 1995 movie, look at the robots in District 9, say no more...

I'm actually pretty interested in the new Supes movie, Zack Snyder did what most people thought impossible- bringing Watchmen to the big-screen faithfully- and Chris Nolan's 'godfather' role over the whle project may ensure it's a quality movie, but time will tell, I guess...

Thanks Joe Soap for the response, a pity John Wagner doesn't remember it, it would've been interesting to read what Alan Grant and himself came up with, but that's the past, onto the new movie, speaking of which...

It appears to me (by what I've seen and read thus far) that the producers of the new Dredd film are going for a sense of gritty, heightened-realism, very much like the early JD comic stories in the late '70's, which I have no problem with, actually.  Although I would walk nekkid over broken glass to see Judge Death on the big-screen, the more I think about it, the more I think the producers behind the new Dredd will stick to the early JD style, with the stories reflecting that, which means we're very likely to see a full-on Block War in one of the sequels, maybe the Angel family, but Judge Death may be a step too far into the realm of the more OTT and esoteric stories of the '80's onwards, but I could be completely wrong on all points, although I very much look forward to any and all news concerning the new movie, and all things considered, I have real confidence in DNA Films' take on Dredd, they've done everything pretty much right, so far...

Angry Vince, dude, Armand Assante would've made a great Rico if the script had been right- which reminds me, if anyone out there has, or knows where to get, a copy of William Wisher's ORIGINAL script for Judge Dredd (before it was mangled by Steven E. DeSouza), I would be most grateful- Assante gave a ferocious performance in the Michael Caine Jack The Ripper television mini-series, but I always thought Michael Wincott would have been the definitive actor for the role of Rico, just a thought...

Just read recently about John Wagner and Alan Grant writing a treatment for the Judge Dredd movie back in the day, but the powers-that-were never followed through on it (and look at how THAT movie ended up) for whatever reason.  Does any forum dwellers know what the storyline was on the Wagner/Grant treatment, I would love to know...
