Might it be that Detective Comics had lots of lapsed readers who, their enthusiasm rekindled by the movie, came back to the fold, rather than lots of brand-new readers? Was Detective Comics so awful that it could have believably suffered a massive reader attrition in the months/years before the movie? Did Detective Comics' sales rise to the detriment of the other Bat-titles?

Maybe the Spider-Man readership was as large as it was ever going to get (likewise with 2000AD), so all the people interested in it were already customers before the movies (Spidey/Dredd) premiered? A rather depressing prospect for 2000AD.

I see what you mean: be patient and all will be revealed as the plan is played out.  ;)

Help! / Re: Dreddworld's Intergalactic Cops

No, it's a police federation of sorts, where intelligence is shared. Lawcon concerns a convention held by the Galactiplex Corporation. 'GalacPol' is never seen, only mentioned in passing.

The reference has to logically feature in a story with Dredd and an alien menace inside MC1, or an intergalactic fugitive.

It's probaby easier to wipe any mention of this organisation from my text than waste time searching, to instead write around it.

Thanks any way!

Announcements / Re: Judge Dredd Movie is Green Lit!

The Dark Judges are classic horror monsters, but Dredd isn't a horror strip. They are probably so well-regarded because they are so odd (as Roger writes. As odd as a Dredd vs. Batman story: two very different genres clashing) in the context of a future cop drama.

Absolutely, their time was over when Bolland stopped drawing them (coinciding with  a perfectly satisfying 'death' scene on Deadworld). All the other stories were creatively pointless. Judge Death introduced Death--he killed a few citizens, was zapped in Boing, end of story. Even Judge Death Lives had no real ideas: we've had Death. Hmmm, now how about four of him?). Necropolis went too far: what if there were umpteen Dark Judges?! Quantity over quality.

I do greatly enjoy Judge Death Lives, BTW!

Like the Marvel/DC situation then: they concentrate on the big money-making properties (movies, computer games, maybe animation) and the comic staff hope that some viewers get so excited that their enthusiasm trickles down and improves comic sales.

BUT, it didn't do much for 2000AD or the Megazine when the Stallone Dredd movie came out, however. Have the Marvel/DC comics seen impressive sale rises whenever movies like Spider-Man, X-Men and Batman were screened? Is there any chance that comics can emerge from the foggy fringes of the entertainment industry? Despite hopes to transfer them to electronic media, a comic is still a comic and people don't much like reading them. It genuinely upsets me.

I'm sure it's something like GalacPol... or does that come from Strontium Dog?

I've only started researching the novels. Isn't InterDep one of the names for the worldwide (rather than intergalactic) Justice community?

I don't even remember Stalag 666!  ;)

General / Re: the lawgiver : tech question

The MK2 was introduced in the story 'Gun Play' (I think!) (quite far into the future of the Case Files reprint schedule).

The reason for its creation was as a plot device to set-up Nero Narcos' attack on the Justice Department in the 'Doomsday' epic (the new Lawgiver was booby-trapped so that its self-destruct would explode when it received a signal from Narcos).

I prefer the MK1 in every way (particuarly Ian Gibson and Ron Smith's streamlined versions): it has a unique profile (the MK2 looks like every other powerful handgun of the 1990s in sci-fi moves and computer games), and the double magazine is joyously silly.

Is there any graphic representation of the Lawgiver MK2 that is considered definitive, THE reference for 2000AD artists? Lots of variations about, as with the uniforms and Lawmasters.

Help! / Dreddworld's Intergalactic Cops

What is the name of the intergalactic police agency in Judge Dredd? Not the Space Corps, but what appears to be a network of intelligence shared by interplanetary law enforcers? It's along the lines of GalacPol. GalactaPol?

Assistance is much appreciated!

It's a common problem with many RPG modules; the set-up material eats up so much room that the book's 'meat' (the adventure script) gets squeezed out.

Some of the modules in the Judge Dredd Companion (also GW) suffer badly from the same shift in perspective.

Often it seems that if 2000AD books get reviewed, it's only because the reviewer puts the effort into seeking them out and buying them, rather than review copies being distributed to the major comics news portals. Or, has this been tried already and met with indifference?

Is a sufficient profit margin made on the reprints (costing nothing bar small royalty payments) to allow flagship editions (or all) to be (respectfully) coloured* and re-edited so they read as a continuous narrative and a compilation of five-to-six page instalments? It worked quite well for Dark Horse's adaptations of Al Williamson's Star Wars newspaper strip (albeit, the colouring job could have been better).

* I mention this not as a fan of 'modernising' excellent b/w comics, but worrying that modern readers refuse to look twice at b/w artwork, so creating a negative association with 2000AD books (some are in full colour, but the 'damage' might have been done by then--first impressions and all that).

I enjoyed reading it a lot more than my RPG did playing it, unfortunately. I can't remember why, but wasn't there more for the GM to read (background material) than to actually present to the Players?

There's a entry now up on Amazon UK for The Restricted Files Vol. 1. I wasn't sure if the original listing would be processed, so quickly amended my order:

There was talk about reprinting some of GW's material (the Judgement Day module was going to be reformatted for the D20 rules if the D20 game had survived longer).
