General / Re: Dredd Vs Transformers

How about a range of Transformers (they do a 'Crossovers' line) based on 2000AD:

Dredd turns into a Lawmaster?
The ABC Warriors tansform into various hi-tech combat vehicles?
Johnny Alpha turns into a skidoo?

GW published the original Judge Dredd RPG, and various articles in White Dwarf. Then there's the Judge Dredd & Rogue Trooper boardgames.

I think Rebellion asked GW about reprinting their Dredd RPG before they settled on Mongoose Publishing, who went the other way and tried to tie it into the Dungeons & Dragons rules.

Re: Tour Of Duty:

I am getting ticked off at all these 'Dredd in the Wild West' stories (which is what the Cursed Earth has sadly been reduced to, saddled with deja vu plots) delaying the advancement of the Chief Judge Sinfield sub-plot (which is far more interesting).

I suppose it reflects how little money 2000AD makes relative to Rebellion's computer games section. The Meg and 2000AD have one editor, who I presume is left to handle additional merchandising duties too (if he still has the energy to get around to it!)

The 2000AD operation strikes me as a 'hobby that pays'; like role-playing publishing, it relies on enthusiasm rather than adequate manpower to pull through.

I just saw it in my local comics shop - was flattered if a little pissed to see the Lawgiver design shown in the book to be a resized/photoshopped image of what looks like my 'design' of lawgiver/  prop replica used in the Judge Minty fan film....

Although I don't like the Lawgiver Mk2 design (I mean generally, not any one artist's rendition thereof), yours is the one that looks the most 'real' to me. Is it a photographed model, or CG? If it's the latter, the lighting is excellent.

I created my own version (not a computer model, a Photoshop illustration) to resemble Ezquerra's chunkier version (a more brutish version of his MK1 design: basically, a shorter barrel), for the headline graphic topping my message board:

I meant specifically anything to do with 2000AD, Robin.

No, I don't think its unusual at all (sadly).

I've had no knowledge whatsoever of the contents of any of the 2000AD reprints before buying them (only recollections of the material that might be included, no contemporary data). It's certainly an area of marketing that remains deficient, which is odd given how hard Rebellion is otherwise working at putting out all these tie-ins.

Update: I've now got DEATH TRAP.

From the way everyone is going on they only seem to want artwork from the progs and not the other artists that have been used.

I'm in favour of using new (decent) artists rather than new (cheap) artists to contribute, but there's no sense in ignoring a massive legacy of existing art which is usually technically better, and adequately depicts the subject the sidebar text is focused on. The first MCA is evenly divided among good and bad art, but there's no reason why (with a bit of research into the back progs) most can't be good.

Bizarre (slightly OT) to see a full page (115) dedicated to Atlantis (dominated by a pedestrian backstory), a location that doesn't have much to do with core Justice Department operations, and the few occasions documenting the Judges' business down there failing to get a mention!  :(

Yes, Rebellion owns ALL the 2000AD artwork from the very beginning (a very small minority is creator-owned). They even own the entire Games Workshop RPG catalogue. It would cost MGP nothing to use any Rebellion artwork, BUT whether they have the ability to restore or colour b/w artwork* beyond assigning fancy 'photo edges' may be beyond the time-scale or budget they are prepared to assign (which I'd assume is pretty shallow given how the Archives are probably only viable in the first place because MGP has been annexed by Rebellion).

*I'd much rather they leave b/w uncoloured. Since the MCAs are supposed to reflect the Dredd strip's entire legacy, is it a lack of respect to ignore the original traiblazers?

Announcements / Re: 3A Toys/Rebellion Press Release

No interest in Tharg, but Johnny Alpha and Wulf dressed in their 'The Killing' outfits would be worth a look (I'm not suggesting Wulf looks any different, but I did prefer Johnny's studded shoulder armour and vambraces).

Yes, I was bit skeptical, but at least I'm now prepared for a longer wait if necessary.

I'm presuming Vol 2 will be a more interesting read, less focused on the Justice Department's bureaucracy and instead relating backstories of their personnel (lots more artwork from the comics, please!).

I am saddened that the designers have entirely ignored the thrill-powered b/w artwork from the older progs (some of which is the best to have ever appeared in the comic), instead allowing bog-standard 'talents' to redraw it (I refer to the 're-imagining' of Chief Judge Goodman's assassination on p32). Why not resort to (tastefully) colouring the original b/w art if it's that much of a problem?

I'd give the first Batman/Dredd 'team-up' 2/5 for the story, and 4/5 for the teaser image of the eagle about to enter combat with the bat (if my memory serves me).

I preferred the Cam Kennedy team-up 'Vendetta on Gotham' (entirely for the art--I'm a massive Kennedy fan) and 'Die Laughing', which I viewed as a 'second go' at 'Judgement on Gotham', more entertaining in every respect, (and focusing much more on MC1 than Gotham).

Other Reviews / Re: Volgan Wars 2

I thought I was the only one who didn't understand what's happening in the recent ABC Warriors stories (beyond the basic premise of revisiting the classic b/w Volgan War stories).

It is unfortunate that the author is revising his older work because it sharply contrasts how his writing technique has lost its focus over the years (one however can hardly accuse him of lacking imagination). Has in this instance (and Slaine) the balance of the storytelling duties shared by writer and artist been skewed too heavily on the latter (oddly framed, sometimes incomprehensible illustrations charged with conveying eccentric plot details better reserved for an explanation in a text format?).

Other Reviews / Re: Shakara (Book 1)
10 February, 2010, 11:53:16 AM
I'm with The Monarch. I thought Book 1 was the best new series to have apeared in 2000AD for many years. It was fast, furious (not particularly imaginative) but counterbalanced by superb illustrations. It reminded me of the old 2000AD stories in these respects.

The subsequent books I've greatly disliked. I saw no reason artistically to pursue the 'character' of Shakara (it kills and looks good, that's as much as we need to know, and Book 1 was as much as we needed to know), but I appreciate Tharg needs to fill the pages of his progs. The art too began to lose its appeal for me (too much grey-shading, 'dampening' the line art's impact).
