Books & Comics / Terran Trade Authority Handbooks.
10 February, 2012, 05:36:07 PM
Just doing a bit of shelf tidying, and as usual, ive gotten sidetracked and started doing a bit of re-reading. This time its my old TTA books.
Which got me thinking, did anyone else enjoy these books?
There was four large format books in total  - Spacecraft 2000 - 2100AD (1978), Great Space Battles (1979), Space Wrecks : Ghostships and Derelicks of Space (1979) and Starliners : Commercial spacetravel in 2200AD (1980).
They were written by Stewart Cowley (with the exception of the 2nd TTA book, which was co-written with Charles Herridge), and featured art that had previously appeared elsewhere, but were used in the TTA books as the basis for Cowleys stories. My favourite artist being the incredible Peter Elson - http://www.peterelson.co.uk/

Spacewrecks was an absolute favourite of mine, and still is.

The story in Starlord was Planet of the Damned, which ran in the first ten issues only.

Regarding Death Planet, i always remember the cover to Prog 62 by Brian Lewis, and thinking Wow, this looks good. Shame it didnt live up to the cover.
Mangamax, looking at the photos you posted, do you own an original page of art from the story?
Theres been a couple of pages on E-Bay of late.

Great stuff indeed. Was wondering when some footage would appear, and now we have some.

As were talking about all things Mick, never seen this before (also recently found some Hellraiser art he did in the 90's)

Was a big reader of Action and Battle, but by the time they'd both merged i was onto pastures new. Still, a fantastic cover, and would have been great to see Mick do some WWII stuff.

I stand corrected - must not have sold well though, otherwise I'm sure that more people would have been aware of it.

Famously the figure didnt sell at all. And a good few stores wouldnt stock it either. The mould for the Alien has been used by a quite a few differant company over the years, so its a familiar looking beast. The original is worth quite a bit though. Why 20th Century Fox would licence so much stuff, from an X cert film, to kids, is strange to say the least. Kenner created some Star Wars sized Alien figures, but these never got past the prototype stage.

the stand outs are Fink, Slaine, and the Last American.
Despite Micks work on it, i never could get into Slaine. To this day, ive hardly read any of it.
The Last American, for me, is perfection.
A lot of fans were left scratching their heads with the later stuff, and ill admit, it took a while for me, but i love it. Have a real soft spot for those Howler episodes.
All time Dredd faves though has got to be Cursed Earth, 1981 Annual, and Fink.

....and great to see that art, robocook. Never really cared much about production art tbh, but when you see a lovely hand coloured example like that, then Hell yes!

Just reworking my way through the Blade Runner 5 disc box set from a couple of years ago.
Tonight will be Disc 2. Dangerous Days - the feature length making of... (three and a half hours long!)
Im hard pressed to think of a better, or more definitive DVD package than this. Brilliant stuff.

Thats interesting, your friend worked on Concrete?
Im ok with the whole origin story, though i can see how the
alien
aspect of it, is at odds with the real world tone of the comic.

Great stuff Matt, got a complete set of the pre-ban stuff myself (except #37,  :() ,
Got a few post-ban specials and Annuals as well, but not a great deal. If you havent got The Story of a Violent Comic by Martin Barker, then i highly recommend you track down a copy - though, it can be pricey. Seen it go for £60ish on E-bay. Reprints many of the strips, plus a shed load of material that never saw the light of day due to IPC's self-imposed ban.
