Was successfully accepted into and offered a position on the September 2020 trainee scheme for journalistic post graduates at the BBC in media city, a positions i've been working towards for 3 years now and was extremely excited to start....

Wednesday Bah!

Only for funding to be pulled for the position days later due to concerns over job security post Covid, and there's no guarantee i'll even be able to simply take up the job next September instead, meaning i'll likely have to reapply for the job and go through the long application process ALL OVER AGAIN...

So the latest thing that's been eating up my time and attention is David Lewis-Williams' 'The Mind In The Cave', which attacks the pressing problem of the origin of cave art (and to some extent, portable art) in the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition.

Really great book, one of my favourite popular archaeologies, but maybe drifting towards out-of-date now.  Can I recommend his equally readable follow-up Inside the Neolithic Mind (2005),  which revisits those ideas and takes them forward to Gobekli Tepe and beyond to megalithic Europe.  (To my horror I realise that one is 15 years old and all).

Man, I bought Inside The Neolithic Mind a good 5 years ago and still haven't got around to reading it. This has reminded me to bump it up a bit.

Nope, can't do it. The 2000AD Facebook groups are too much for me.  Lots of good people there doing good work making/aggregating good content, but it's surrounded by such an ocean of smug negativity that every visit feels like the start of a peptic ulcer. Why people purport to be part of a fan community and spend their time relentlessly criticising the same creators (and editors), in many cases quite openly without having ever read the thing they harbour such animosity towards, I can't quite grasp.

Obviously they're free to say and think what they want, express their fandom as they please and good luck to them, but I can't be doing with it. Chummy banter I get, shitting on the people who make the thing you claim to love,  I just don't.

Oh I dropped out a few weeks back. It wasn't even fun in a morbidly curious fashion anymore, watching the same four or five members circle jerk isn't my idea of an open community or a fun time.

I thought I had missed out on the 50% off voucher from last year (yeah, i've not logged into the online store in awhile...). Astoundingly, I haven't and it's still valid until 31/08/2020. Only problem is I seem to be having a slight problem inputting the code....because the voucher at the checkout process isn't providing one.

Did anyone else have this slight headache?

My primary axe to grin with the Megaverse and affiliated groups is the miserable, boomer 'Everything that isn't exactly as I remember it IS BOLLOCKS' rhetoric. There a are number of superb contributes, but never read the comments.

SAM is chuffing brilliant. A wonderfully whimsical little bit of sci-fi you don't really see too often anymore.

Whilst you might not like Frank's persona, he doesn't come across as a frustrated creative writer.

Frank comes across as many things, creative isn't one of them. Scojo had that at least.

Are we not certain that Wullie/Frank isn't Scojo? I know they're low tier trolls both, but they both have the same tedious MO.

Oh, and the 2KAD Facebook groups still suck.

....Is Shark alright*, does anyone know? He appears to have been uncharacteristically quiet of late, and the debaty threads have been all the emptier for it...

[The great silence]

Ive now seen The great silence. Really good. Really liked its gritty and snowy setting. Hell of a an ending.

I love a good snow western, and yup - The Great Silence has some superb performances, not least Jean-Louis Trintignant, despite his character's limited ability to express himself. And the ending - that either makes or breaks the whole film. Glad it worked for you. It's worth looking at the alternate ending they shot, which goes in completely the opposite direction - almost comically so.

His muteness was very interesting. The alternative ending was included on the DVD (albeit without sound). Made for a good laugh considering the ending they went with

I do love the theatrical ending, a true bait and switch on the established Yojimbo-Dollars-Django ending.

It's yours if you want it mate, Powell packed it with a bunch of sketches, alternative pages and bonus material not in the paperbacks so it is indeed a worthy treat!

It's the lovely HC Library edition Colin, this one. I never got the rest and i'm switching over to the paperbacks for space reasons, but it's a bloody gorgeous book.
