My main thing will be up on the 15th along with Super Surfer's, but here's something seasonal to keep us going for today.

The Eagle
Inspired by Poe (not the Tellytubby, the other one)

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a thick and heavy volume of Mega-City law
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of some one gently rapping, rapping at my con-apt door.
'It is some visitor,' I muttered, 'tapping at my con-apt door
Only this, and nothing more.'

Ah, distinctly I remember it was in the bleak December,
And my Luxi-heating fender cast its ghost upon the floor.
Eagerly I wished the morrow; - vainly I had sought to borrow
From the books surcease of sorrow - sorrow for the lost Lenore -
For the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels called Lenore -
Nameless here for evermore.

And the silken sad uncertain rustling of the synthi-curtain
Thrilled me - filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating
'It is some visitor entreating entrance at my con-apt door
Some late visitor entreating entrance at my con-apt door;
This it is, and nothing more.'

Presently my soul grew stronger; hesitating then no longer,
'Citizen' said I, 'truly your forgiveness I implore;
But the fact is I was napping, and so gently you came rapping,
And so faintly you came tapping, tapping at my con-apt door,
That I was not sure I heard you.'
Here I opened wide the door;
Darkness there,
and nothing more.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing,
Doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before;
But the silence was unbroken, and the darkness gave no token,
And the only thing there spoken was the whispered words, 'The Law?'
This I whispered, and an echo murmured back again, 'The Law!'
Merely this and nothing more.

Back into the chamber turning, all my soul within me burning,
Soon again I heard a tapping somewhat louder than before.
'Surely,' said I, 'surely that is something at my window lattice;
Let me see then, what there at is, and this mystery explore -
Let my heart be still a moment and this mystery explore; -
'Tis the wind and nothing more!'

Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there flew a stately eagle of the cursed days before.
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
Just flew up and perched beside my bedroom door -
Perched upon the Justice hotline just beside my bedroom door -
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.

Then this ebony bird beguiling my sad fancy into smiling,
By the grave and stern decorum of the countenance it wore,
'Though you look forlorn and fearful, you,' I said, 'are sure not legal.
Ghastly grim and ancient eagle wandering from the nightly shore -
Tell me what thy drokking name is on this night's dystopian shore!'
Quoth the eagle 'You broke the law.'

Much I panicked at this ungainly bird to hear it speak so plainly,
For its answer cut me to the core;
I had not told a single living human being,
Never breathed a whisper or a rumour
Yet this bird that sat beside my bedroom door,
Knew, it knew, that I had broke the law.

And that eagle sitting lonely on the intercom, spoke only,
Those words, as if his soul in those four words he did outpour.
Nothing further then he uttered - not a feather then he fluttered -
Till I scarcely more than muttered 'Other birds have flown before -
In the morning he will leave me, as my fears have flown before.'
Then the bird said, `You broke the law.'

Startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken,
'I get it,' said I, 'what it says is its only stock and store,
Overhead from some Judge, or its circus master
It just learned that phrase, it knows nothing of the law.
No one knows what I did, no one heard, no one saw.
It can't know anything of my fatal flaw.

But the eagle still and staring made my soul feel like baring
So I wheeled a cushioned seat in front of bird and bedroom door;
Then, on the faux-velvet sinking, I took myself to thinking
Fancifully thinking what this ominous bird before -
What this grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt, and ominous bird of yore
Meant in croaking 'You broke the law.'

This I sat engaged in guessing, but no syllable expressing
To the bird whose fiery eyes now burned into my bosom's core;
This and more I sat thinking, while my soul continued sinking.
How could this thing know of my breaking from the law,
How could it know what I had done to that sweet Lenore?
Who shall breathe air, nevermore!

Then, I thought, the air grew grotty, smelling like a ten day hottie,
Or some pleasure district whore who'd been busted by the law.
'Stomm,' I cried, 'what is that smell, what did you let free?
Stop it, stop it! You won't catch me. I know all about your law!
They will not come to arrest me, they'll never find the lost Lenore.
Quoth the eagle, 'You broke the law!'

'Drokk it!' said I, 'thing of evil! - shut your beak, you bird or devil! -
Whatever monster lent you, whatever villain sent you to my door,
Go back to their department, you will not get your entrapment
In my home I stand undaunted, I have found your flaw
So what do you say to that, foul feathered creature?'
Quoth the eagle, 'You broke the law.'

'Eagle!' said I, 'thing of evil! - shut your bill you bird or devil!
By that Heaven that bends above us - by that Grud we both ignore
I did not do it, I did not kill her, I did not take her down to Re-Syk.
With her body heavily laden, I did not stagger through that door.
I never knew her, never knew anyone called Lenore.
You cannot prove I ever laid eyes upon a lady called Lenore.'
Quoth the eagle, 'You broke the law.'

'Be those words our final parting, bird or fiend!' I shrieked upstarting
But then there came a sudden knocking upon my door
Opening up I saw a figure, tall and clad in all the trappings of the law.
'Greetings, citizen,' he spoke as he stepped onto my floor.
'A little birdie told me you just confessed to murder and much more.'
Quoth the Judge, 'I am the Law.'

And now I'm sitting, endlessly just siting
In the darkest, deepest iso-dungeon of this Mega-City's law
And my eyes are always streaming, as I sit here dreaming,
As the lamp-light seems to cast her shadow on the floor;
And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor
Shall be lifted - nevermore!
