So, a few weeks ago I put forward a suggestion at work- a new way to work out productivity and staffing  requirements.  Simple statistics rather than the current method, which is to just guess.  Its a simple change which could make a big difference to the way things are done.  All very boring. Quite effective.  Management are interested.  They want more information.

And today...idea is rejected.

Fair enough, these things happen.  But the reason for the rejection was genius.  Those in charge would like to continue to guess rather than use facts, because facts make them look bad.  Guessing may be ridiculous, but a change would bring this to peoples attention.

the whole continent is ripe for development by a new generation of Helltrekers desperate to escape the post-DoC despair. The redevelopment of MC2, the Mutant Townships (those must have a fairly decent population by now), Luna 2, Gore City...

Rather than rebuilt MC1 as it was, wouldn't it make more sense for the authorities to make a land grab, establishing outposts across the country,  especially since other nations have already shown an interest in the North American wilderness?

there's also Uranium City, way up north (i think sometimes placed in Canada, sometimes Alaska, though i might be wrong).  It's size seems to vary, so might not justify the "mega" tab.

I haven't read the doorstop of Atlas Shrugged, but i have made it the way through The Fountainhead, which she wrote several years before.  It is, frankly, badly written shit.  Rand thought that she had come up with these inspiring, heroic characters, but is unable to develop them much beyond two dimensions.  Once she's introduced these characters, she seems unable to come up with anything interesting for them to do, so has them stumble from one hateful adventure to the next, stomping all over unions, the homeless, liberals, and other scumbags.

The most telling part of the whole book was the intro, in which Rand essentially says that anyone who doesn't think she written a great book and who agrees with everything she says is a useless idiot.

Oh, and she's also the only author I've ever read who uses "humanitarian" as an insult.  the Tories are well on their way there.

the Randian Utopia of a people without government has finally been achieved by the Republicans.  Lets see how that works out for them...

mmmm...I'm pretty disappointed.

The first 45 minutes of plot could have been done away with if someone had just invented
existing facial recognition technology
, rather than
magic guns which we happened to mention in passing earlier
,
flying robots which save people from having to look around a room
, or
Doc Brown's car
.

Chaucer would hate us all.  Here's a lovely Ted talk on the evolution of written language...

It amazes me how many "good" people are willing to treat others badly because their partial reading of a poorly translated version of something written on goat skin by a hermit.
