Film Discussion / Re: Dredd - Box Office

i think the problem may have been , for the normal non comic viewer, that it may be a future too close to home with a possibility of happening ( MC1), coupled with the reflex ' dont mess with our democracy' headspace.
Even though it was a tough cop action flick, that also americans are a bit further along the 'them and us' , 'fed up with bad bully cop stories in reality' that threefold would have put them off thinking it was a bad concept/idea.

So i think that the trailer 'should ' have had the scene with anderson and dredd when they first arrest the guy, but split the scene up line by line throughout the edit so that you followed the conversaation, but it didnt drag on too long as it was cut up even further, so you had anderson saying hes hte killer, im 99% sure, and dredd responding with 99%s not good enough'..
I think if that 99% not good enough was heard onmthe trailer it would have allieviated some of the thoughts processed when watching to ' hes a real honest cop!'..
then maybe for the poster, some sort of image that instills ' a marshall in the wild west', theres a few shots come to mind, involving the badge, or dual at midday, but something that shows more that he is this tough law enforcer, rather than a menacing shadow, or cheesy comic book character old poster rehash, ( daredevil or something)
thats what i think happened in america anyway

the double page image in Dante, with the airship destroying the palace near the end of the story.
With thin sliver panels of the main cast and all their different reactions over the top.
It doesnt need a catchphrase or quote to make it, the drawing itself gets over the thoughts of each character perfectly.

General / ultra violence vs pg
05 October, 2012, 01:31:44 PM
Interesting chat with a mate, and thought id start a thread here about it see what others think.

Ultra violent gun play VS PG family rated gun play

im not saying violence in films 'makes' people do crazy things in real life, like we see often in news stories about new film releases or  a latest computer game to irk a politician somewhere.

But when i compare a film like Dredd with its ultra violent and sometimes gory scenes, then compare it to some family film with very little or no blood, or films where people just fall over,

im actually inclined to think, that the family rated/tame gunplay does more harm than the  violent counterpart.
With the family side making it seem less worse than it is, and sometimes coming across as 'fun', eg raiders of the lost ark when he faces the sword guy.
Whereas something like Dredd hits you with the reality of the finite aspect of guns.

So what do other people think ?

It serves me right for checking out this thread (before reading this weeks Prog) as i've just spotted a massive spoiler for Brass Sun!  :-\  :D I'm really enjoying it, and cannot wait to get my hands on it (hopefully tomorrow). None of my bloody newsagents near to where I live sell 2000AD and I have to make a near kilometre walk to my nearest W.H smiths to buy a copy. It really pisses me off, we can buy all the American comics without any hassle, but when it comes to THE GREATEST BRITISH COMIC, I have to go on a mission.  :-\

Even that classical music reference to me seems intentional and a clue..., wish my memory wasnt so bad
It's a line from Birdhouse in Your Soul by They Might Be Giants. Possibly the most annoying song in he history of popular music.

just had to watch the video :)
theres something about the wordage of the voice to dredd that is familiar, childish or young or something, the 'glowing friend' makes me thing of a computer ( that block whose AI went odd, maybe, or even the imaginary horned/angel/baby friend of that dodgey judge many years back.). Even that classical music reference to me seems intentional and a clue..., wish my memory wasnt so bad ;)
