Games / Re: Last game played...
23 February, 2013, 06:02:07 AM
I played Battlefield 1943 last night, first time for a while.  The land based maps, Iwo Jima etc, are still great fun.  However, I couldn't get a game on my fave map, Coral Sea, the strictly airborne one. It was a shame, as I love the simple dogfighting action.  I guess it's not popular enough for games to be set up regularly.

Animator of some fine cartoons from my childhood, Bob Godfrey. Just a few days after Richard Briars who narrated Roobarb & Custard

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-21552718

That's sad. Godfrey said he developed the strobe-effect action and dancing colour of his animation because he didn't have the cash to pay a team to fill in the colour and drawn the linking frames between poses necessary to provide the illusion of smooth movement. As a kid, I just thought it was a stylistic choice.

Yes indeed - and it has been adopted since as a legitimate technique by many animators to inject life into otherwise static scenes. I've used it myself on more than one occasion - it also allows for the static scenes to be easily amended, such as the rolling of eyes and sticking out tongues etc.  I uploaded a demonstration of this particular technique/effect some time ago. I'll see if I can dig it out.

Yep, he was a legend - hugely influential. Sad to see him go.

3. It really is just a random series of stuff that doesn't belong anywhere else and I'm looking for meaning a little too much.

HELP ME!

The thread was original an observation/complaint about other threads going completely off topic.  As a result, everyone has since humourously posted random stuff that has nothing to do with thread jacking.

Because ive just recieved a nice little e-mail saying that the inking is done, and the piece is now finished...

Ha!  For one second my brain did a backflip and asked 'why is he being emailed to say his tattoo is finished?  Can't he tell when the buzzing and pain stops?'

Obviously a few seconds later the more rational part of my mind assumed you were talking about a commision of some kind...

I'm reading Simon Pegg's 'Nerd Do Well', which is surprisingly entertaining.  Lots of references to Star Wars, which is always good.  :D

Feel daft that its taken me this long to realise - those early external shots we all saw online were the inside set of Peach Trees.... :-[

I always thought the internal shots of Dredd and Anderson in the lower floor atrium were shot on the Green Screen set used for the various levels

...but no they were all shot outside at an external location.
Doh !

...so even more kudos for the photography, lighting and genius of the film crew.

It's one of the scenes I really liked, as they first enter PT. Shooting by day...then a night shot for the 'interior'. YT has a bunch of stuff on how the brilliant fx team built up the inside of PT, I didn't post it as it seems to be from the DVD...and has no doubt been posted here loads already.

Yeah... that fooled me as well.

I thought the Peach Trees interior/plaza/atrium/whatever was shot on a massive soundstage/set, and looked a bit 'unreal', so when Alex Garland challenged me to find a fault with the film (because up to that point I had been incredibly positive) I said that was the only flaw I could see.  He corrected me, by pointing out it was shot at a very specific real location in SA, as you say, both by day and by night.  D'oh!

So my only critiscism was shot down in flames, and also exploded my mind about what I perceive and what actual IS.

Conan is endlessly searching for the 6-Fingered Man...
Is he really left handed?

When the story is about the son of a swordsmith who devotes his life to finding and defeating the man who killed his father in front of him, left a scar on his face, and stole his sword it's hard not to draw unflattering comparisons.   It's The Raid all over again.

Films sharing similar plots?  INCONCEIVABLE!

I finally got my free copy of Avatar to go with my Blu-Ray player.  The 3D was very good indeed on my new telly, but the more I see this film the more contrived I think it is.

I just got to the end of season four last night! Brilliant! Just brilliant!
Hal's simple summary of events over the phone to his wife was almost Dredd-like in its simplicity.  And the final shot - I knew it!!!  He's become such a monster, it had to be him.
Unless you're into Iron Maiden, in which case you're marketed to all of your life.  ;)

I had no idea Maiden was still cranking out music.  I'll dust off my KILLERS shirt and wear it in their honor tomorrow.

Good man!  Yeah, they're still putting out music, and occasionally trying to be innovative too. They'll never be as good as Killers or Powerslave again, but a whole new generation of kids are into them these days, which is great.

I haven't seen one of those fire hoses in the back ground for ages.

Interestingly, they have been removed from many workplaces because of the risk of legionella bacteria.

QuoteKIDS WITH GUNS

But what about violent video games? And violent movies? Like this one?

JUDGE KARL

We should ban them because, as you know, human beings never had the urge to senselessly kill each other prior to the invention of violent movies and video games. All the murders, sex crimes and wars throughout human history can be traced back directly to Pulp Fiction and San Andreas. Now I'm going to let you kids off with a warning. STUN!
